PM's bodyguard in crashes probe

Featured Replies

One of the Prime Minister’s bodyguards spent a night in police custody after being accused of causing two road accidents and fleeing the scene. The man was named by police as Captain Mom Vireak, 42, a military bodyguard officer working with the 144th Military Intervention Unit of Hun Sen’s Bodyguard Command.

Capt Vireak was arrested on Wednesday night and accused of driving over the speed limit and damaging a motorcycle and two cars on National Road 2 near Phnom Penh. He was released yesterday morning without charge. A Dangkor district police officer, Sin Ratha, said Capt Vireak was arrested after driving his damaged car at high speeds from a crash on National Road 2 in Kandal Province.

Mr Ratha said he was released after police verified he had not been responsible for the crashes. “During questioning at the police station, he denied the allegations and said he was the victim of false accusations,” he said. “He said he had fled the scene of the road accidents because there had been a misunderstanding and he was afraid he would be killed by those people if he stopped the car at night.”
