Generally your apps will update to the OS,  what version of iOS are you on now ? 

 

I recently updated my OS to iOS 10 after months of waiting, and I'm happy with it, no performance hits etc, I'm on an iPhone 6, so your 5s should be fine too.

If your device is too old to take the iOS update then it will tell you; no update available.
