Must I wait for full term of non Immigrant to expire ?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I arrived 2 weeks ago on a 1 year non Immigrant O visa and decided to just change over to a retirement extension. I am not wanting to spend one day every three months doing border runs. Must I wait for the full one year term to expire to make the change? Also since I just deposited the 800,000 Baht into the bank, is it possible to get a 1 month extension at the local office (Chiang Mai) or do I need to make a border run to extend? Finally what documents do I need to prepare for the retirement application? Thank you in advance for your responses, I tried searching for answers but some answers varied and I don't want to waste time running home for missing documents, spent my first day here running around for the TM30 and residence certificate.

You can apply for the 12 month extension within the final 30 days of any permission to stay. ( 45 days at some offices)

The 800,000 has to be in the bank for 60 days before applying.

Thanks for the clarification, just to be clear on required documents. I bring my passport, 3 photos, the application form (3 copies) and a bank statement.  Is there anything missing? Are the medical certificate and background  check only needed if applying outside Thailand?

You will only need one TM7 application form with a 4 X 6 cm photo attached (no other photos needed). Download, complete and print two sided  this Fillable TM7 form.pdf

You will need a copy of your passport photo page, visa, entry stamp and TM6 departure card.

You will need a letter from your bank confirming your account and the balance it. Copies of your bank book showing the 800k baht for 60 days.

No medical or police clearance is needed.

So, UbonJoe, are you saying that, for someone who has a retirement O-A extension to stay,  the first time that someone needs to check-in with Immigration to register their "90 day report" its really 60 days??

You might well find doing border runs during the lifetime of your non-O visa to be infinitely preferable in practice to queuing up outside the Chiang Mai immigration office from the small hours, which appears to be the strict order of the day for obtaining retirement extensions at that particular office according to various reports on both this and the Chiang Mai local forum.

Another advantage is that you would also be spared the hassle of 90-day reporting at that particular office.

The fewer the dealings you need to have with that wretched office (during the lifetime of your non-O visa at least) the better, I think.

His post was in reference to the 800k being in the bank for 90 days.

You will also need proof of residence.

If you are renting, you'll need rental contract, copy of landlords housebook and ID.

Belive Chiang Mai immigration also requires a TM30 form.

Can someone in Chiang Mai list all paperwork.

Probably less than Samui Immigration asks for.

For me spending most of a day on a trip to Mae Sai for a border crossing sounds like more of a hassle. I may as well get used to the process at the Promenade office as this is where I am settling.
