BANGKOK, 14 June 2016 (NNT) - The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) has launched the Smart Water Operation Center in the hope of improving the management of water resources and preventing drought and flooding.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikalya. Serving as a command center, the Smart Water Operation Center uses data from the Meteorological Department, the Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute and the Department of Water Resources to develop a plan to prevent future water shortages and deluge.

The center also offers useful advice to farmers such as which crops to grow and how much water to use.

Real time images from 17 provincial irrigation offices and data from 700 irrigation projects will be sent directly to the center, improving the center's capacity to monitor water situations across Thailand.
