Beyond Blackface: Thai model in shameful homeless-inspired photoshoot

BANGKOK: -- Just when you think you’ve seen it all in Thailand, the ground seems to give way so your jaw can drop just a bit further.

In this week’s WTF news, former winner of Thai modeling show The Face Thailand Season 3, Natthaya “Grace” Boonchompaisarn, 22, from Bangkok, posted an Instagram picture from her latest photoshoot wearing menswear-inspired clothing from top-tier designer Jil Sander.

The wildly ill-advised shot shows the model sprawled on a city street wearing the designer clothes but they are tied around her like rags. She still sports a full face of makeup but grasps a fast food burger bag and holds her hand out as if asking for change.

"In front of her is a sign that reads, in English, 'Homeless just trying to get through the day any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.' "

Just a misspelling. It really was meant to be "Harmless". Like all those years they misspelled "Darlie"

Whatever. It's all been done  dozens of times before. 'Homeless Chic' is a popular perennial for designers and fashion mags alike. UK magazines such as The face, and Blitz were very keen on this sort of fashion shoot back in the eighties and nineties. And further back, photographers such as David Bailey often shot scruffy waif-thin models in the street, or lying on the pavement etc etc  [ yawn].  It's incredible some idiot journo, can can be so naive and un-researched to think that this is somehow 'new' or shocking.

quite politically incorrect perhaps?

but on the other hand the scandal could ignite some awareness of the long forgotten/ignored beggars in the streets of Bangkok...that is for the real beggers and not the organised begging gangs that exist...

"Grace" is Thai, 22 years old, dark skinned (a plus in a world of white), hot and a successful world class model. The photo shoot was for designer Jil Sander, a 73 year old minimalist fashion designer from Germany.

I don't believe this photo was taken in Thailand since the message was in English. Maybe someone can disprove my point.

Bad taste, yes, but since when has fashion been governed by taste.

And there was me (idjit) thinking the toothpaste manufacturers were being politically correct!
