BANGKOK: -- Consumers are increasingly turning their backs on natural gas as the price of regular gasoline at the pumps remains low.

Manager reported that NGV stations are closing continually nationwide as especially truck firms switch back to benzene.

Industry spokesman Withoon Kuncharoenwirat said that the move back to regular gasoline was a continuing phenomenon as low prices remained.

There was a high of 500 NGV (natural gas for vehicles) stations nationwide but this has now dropped to 461, said Withoon.

Five more are reportedly closing down just this week.

LPG (liquid petroleum gas) is also affected, said Withoon.

Truck haulage changes are the main reason. Firms are switching to regular gasoline to save money.

Of 40,000 trucks adapted some 12,000 or around 30% have now abandoned NGV, said Manager.

If you have already adapted your vehicle to NGV, and kept the petrol as backup fuel,  I cannot understand why anyone would use petrol. NGV is still much cheaper to run than petrol.

If you consider to adapt to use NGV today (installing new tank etc), I don't know if the investment is justified though. Have to make a new calculation.

Still bloody expensive in Aust.  Almost double of Thailand

According to Shell the nationwide price of "Gasahol 91" (so basically regular unleaded) is 24.83 baht a litre as of today.

According to the NRMA, the average price of ULP in Sydney to the week Monday was $1.12

24.83 baht at the current exchange rate is $0.962 AUD meaning that the price of petrol in Australia is not even remotely close be being "almost double of Thailand.

If you're talking LPG, as of May it was 20.49 a litre (AU$0.794) in Thailand vs 68.1 cents a litre in Sydney (per NRMA again) making LPG cheaper in Australia...not double the price.

Trucks reverting to gasoline, petrol?

As far as I know, most trucks and pickups are running on diesel and/or CNG.

Cars with petrol engines can have LPG or CNG.

Diesel engines can run on diesel, CNG and on a mix of diesel and LPG.

All, of course, as far as I know!

Rubbish, especially new LPG stations pop up everywhere. PTT is the main driver. Which is completely contrary to what happened just a few years ago when they wanted to phase out LPG in favour of CNG. The latter is now more expensive than LPG, and LPG cost half of petrol. So conversion makes more sense than ever.

There are too many of them anyway. Also why do we have all these different alternatives CNG, LPG, KFC and MCD....why not pick one and say this is the Thai standard....no need for duplicating the stations then.
