In hospital I was given M as it is called against constipation. The best, no cramps , no uncontrollable sudden urge. In other words no stress. BUT I learned to take side effects seriously. Do not longer than 7 days, may change chemical balance in you body. I've been taken M much longer. I e I must find a replacement.

What do you take which meets similar criteria?

Increase the fiber in your diet.  You can use a fiber supplement to help, something like two packets of Mucilin per day mixed with a large glass of water or fruit juice.  It helps, too, to increase your consumption of water and natural sources of fiber like fresh fruit, veggies and whole grain products like All Bran cereal, oatmeal, etc.  Google is your friend.

Prunes work very well and can be found in modt supermarkets...Tops, big C, Tesco. Usually just 1 or 2 suffices though it varies with the individual. Eat at nigjt before going to bed.

Villamarket sells bags with bran (looks close to bread crums). Some table spoons in a cup, add some liquid (cold or just warm) and drink it. After a few days result!

As a kid I used to take this, quite often as I remember, probably could do with some now as am not a " regular " guy .
Tastes pretty good, just like thick milk .
