Temple sculptures moved to prevent theft

Battambang officials have removed several sculptures from Barsaeth temple and rehoused them in the provincial museum to protect them from theft. The temple, in Sangke district’s Tapoan commune, is 15 kilometres east of Battambang town.

 

It was built in the 11th century, between 1036 and 1042, during the region of King Suryavarman I. Keo Sopheap, director of Battambang’s Culture and Fine Arts Department, said authorities began repairing the temple two months ago and decided to remove the artefacts for safe-keeping.

 

“We were worried someone would steal the artefacts, so we decided to move them to the provincial museum so everyone can see them,” she said. Ms Sopheap said there are no guards to protect the temple, since it is outside of the main town, which is why officials were worried about potential theft.
