BANGKOK: -- Most of the over 2,900 captive elephants in Asian tourism industry are kept in poor or unacceptable conditions, animal rights body World Animal Protection said in a report on Thursday.

The report puts the spotlight on Thailand, where 2,198 elephants were used for tourism, more than 75 percent of the total, followed by 617 in India and 166 in Sri Lanka.

The report is the result of a two-year long investigation by WAP which surveyed 2,923 elephants living in 220 establishments in Asia.

Elephants kept in poor/ unacceptable conditions, so what, we only care about making money.

Thailand wants to be seen as a modern progressive country, but still allows barbaric treatment of elephants.

Time for this barbaric treatment to be stopped.

Last week a saw a video on Facebook about training elephants.

It was supposedly filmed in Germany and showed the trainer using hooks to control the elephants.

A Thai person forwarded the video with comments about how bad German people are and that they should be pressurised to stop this terrible cruelty.

I wrote a comment that Thai people were just as bad, if not worse and linked to a few videos on YouTube showing baby elephants chained to trees and being beaten with hooks too.

I was attacked and ridiculed and was told that this sort of thing never happens in Thailand.

About the only way to fight or stop this is to educate the people that come here, load up in the silver vans of death, drive out to Mae Rim, Mae Taeng, Mae Wong and ride the elephants.
Anyone seriously trying to stop this exploitive money making scheme could just end up committing suicide by hanging.
