While I don't want to speculate on who is behind the bombings, I thought that there should be some other points raised:

1. Gen. Sonthi is himself a Muslim. It is to be expected that he would have good sources of information in the South - and thus something like this probably would not have escaped his attention had it been planned by separatists.

Please see the note posted previously: Sondthi was in charge of the murders of muslims down south last year.

Does anyone know anything about the poor farang who got hit and had to have his leg amputated? I am so confused with all of this information from varying sources?

Lookchin

How about the poor Thai who lost their lives, or were injured ???

The media never cares about that. Remember Bali? You can read how many Australians lost their lives. And how many British. And how many others. But locals? No figure...

Maybe he just wants to know if its somebody he knows. And of course the media is going to concentrate on whats more relative to the majority of its viewers.

Relying the local media is sometimes difficult as their articles are naturally prone to reflect a bit subjective opinions. However in these days it is easy to check all the information, for instace visiting Google News web site. Actually Bangkok bombing was a number one global top story today and there were hundreds of articles from various papers. I just pasted what Reuters UK was writing few minutes ago:

"All eight small time-bombs were made of ammonium nitrate fertiliser and triggered by digital watches.

Some were planted in areas likely to cause deaths -- outside a shopping mall, in an open-air market -- and some were not, like one in the parking lot of another mall and one at an intersection.

But two later bombs which exploded around midnight would have caused untold mayhem had New Year street parties gone ahead. They were planted at either end of the broad stretch of road in Bangkok's upscale shopping district where the main party was to have been held.

Nine foreigners were among the wounded -- four Hungarians, three Serbs and two Britons, police said."

Not really relevant - such an event would not decrease his knowledge or his sources of information down South.

but it could have gained him and what he represents a large group of enemies.

What "murder of muslims down south" are you talking about? The serious incident in the south (Tak Bai) was in 2004 and was investiaged and findings are as below:

Who must take responsibility for the crackdown and the transportation of protesters?

The committee found that Maj-General Chalermchai Wiroonphet, then commander of the Fifth Infantry Division, is responsible for both incidents.

He was not at the scene to oversee the operation to the end. Instead, he left the scene at 7.30pm without an acceptable excuse, to meet the prime minister in Narathiwat.

Maj-General Sinchai Nutsatit, the then deputy commander of the Fourth Army Region, was assigned to prepare water, food and accommodation for protesters once they arrived at the camp in Pattani.

He failed to take any action against officials who were in control of the transport of protesters when he found that some had died on the trucks.

He also did not act in any way to help protesters detained on the trucks. If he did act, he could have reduced the number of casualties.

Lt-General Pisarn was the highest authority after martial law was imposed.

Although he assigned subordinates to oversee the operation, it was his responsibility to make sure they succeeded in carrying out their tasks.

When he was informed 70 protesters had died on the trucks, he failed to act.

The committee concluded the tragedy that led to 78 deaths was beyond expectations and was not intentional.

State officials carried out their work under limitations that led to flaws and mistakes, but there was no deliberate act to cause death and injury.

As the bombs were made differently from previous bombs in the south, I wonder where similar bombs have been used. Is there a new group of Muslims involved? Were the bombs supposed to look similar to others?

At least there might be some REAL journalism there. The US media would just find the hottest chick injured and focus on her. Maybe lots of pics of damage.

I don't know why, but I don't feel any sincerity in this guy....He is a pretender....look at all his posts....sound not true to me....

The journalism has been quite good.

By the way, nearly every Thai person I have spoken to and also overheard on the matter dont blame Muslims. They label an entirely different group.

I subscribe to the 'Speculation is fruitless without information' School

But here in the Near North the nearly unanimous view, on the street, is Taksin's 'friends'......and that has lost him a lot of previously unexpressed sympathy..so maybe NOT Taksin's friends!!? TIT

looks from the pictures that all forensic evidence was just sweeped away and removed - and I think it was disposed rather than moved to the laboratory. That way we might never know the truth about the bombings.

The correct procedure would be to cordon off the immediate area of explosion and allow experts to gather the evidence - the whole process taking days or even weeks.

The area around the Victory Monument was definitely cordoned off, carefully marked, photographed, and forensic evidence gathered and tagged during the hours which followed the blast.

Don't know about the other sites though but the police were reporting that they were studying evidence from many sites so it appears that they did the same thing in other locations. Khunying Pornthip was also seen at a numbe

r of the sites and I highly doubt she would have let anything of significance be destroyed or swept up.

Agree with you except on the part of upper class frequented shopping center. Central World and especially Gaysorn definitely are, and explosions around midnight were all around there.
Allow me to clarify. I meant *in* shopping centers. All of the bombings in the Central World area were outside. More notably, Central Chidlom, Paragon and Emporium, arguably the three most popular upper-class shopping centers, were not affected at all.

I agree...it seems impossible not to collect and study evidences...I can not imagine a sweeping before tight examination....

I mentioned in the other thread that there was a thread some months ago when a contributor mentioned the lack of an adequate police forensic service in the context of the ambulance 'service' attending incidents. So the army may have better skills in that area. Also is there any expertise on psychological profiling in Thailand, used effectively elsewhere with serial murders?

This could just as likley be the army trying to lose Thaksin support.......

Who knows?

Or

Perhaps this another section of the military trying to destabalise Thailand in order to stage their own coup and seize power.

It's possible that there is a 3rd party, perhaps the same people responsible for the thaksin car bomb?

Who Ever they are, what ever their twisted motive... They WIN if we let them control us through fear... They WIN if we let them stop us from celebrating the new year. It's not easy, and it's certainly scary, but we can't let them gain control.

They already won they got the New Year celebration cancelled they killed a few people and injured many and they were not caught now people are going to walk in fear like what happened in new York on 9-11 they even got Seacon Square to close this will hurt tourism which is already hurting and with the coup as well as the 2005 tsunami in the South as well as the violence in the South and with the thai baht over inflatted so few crooks can make a fast killing how is Thailand going to recover after all that B/S and now we are back to martial law in BKK if I did not live here I would not come here for vacation and I am sure many people think on the same lines as I do there are many beautiful beaches around the world and with there currentcy not inflatted may I say more. A personal note to BKK Bank stop playing with the thai baht your hurting the country more than the terrorist are

The Mukden Incident of September 18, 1931, also called the Manchurian Incident, occurred in southern Manchuria when a section of railroad, owned by Japan's South Manchuria Railway, near Mukden (today's Shenyang) was blown up by Japanese junior officers. Imperial Japan's military accused Chinese dissidents of the act, thus providing an excuse for the Japanese annexation of Manchuria.

The Gleiwitz incident was a staged attack on 31 August 1939 against the German radio station Sender Gleiwitz in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia, Germany ( on the eve of World War II in Europe. This provocation was one of several actions in Operation Himmler, a Nazi Germany project to create the appearance of Polish aggression against Germany

Don't forget the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem by Jewish terrorists dressed as Arabs. Or the Lavon Affair, where Jewish terrorists conducted a bombing campaign against American and British facilities, also trying to blame it on the Arabs. This false flag op created such a scandal that it brought about the resignation of the Israeli Prime Miister David Ben Gurion.

Saddam Husseins attack on the World Trade Centre??

Huh????

A very sad start to what should be a fun filled holiday, I dread to think what impact this will have on tourism.

I suggest that all of us on Thai Visa support Thailand and have our families visit us. I just spoke to my 87 year old mother to come with Dad ( 91 ). She said that's a great idea and will bring my great grand son age 14 months with them. Come on all show support.

of course the easiest thing now is to point finger at Thaksin ....

Actually the easiest thing would be to point the finger at external terrorists making a point after Saddam's execution or the southern separatists. Howeevr, the evidence doesnt point at them. In fact it seems to rule them out. That does kind of leave Mr. T and/or some of his supporters in a bit of a spot. I am sure some conspiracy theorists will be on hand to try and alleviate this unfortunate position in which he or his find themselves.

As I read most of the post and i do not agree with most because many are jumping to quick to convict let all take a deep breath and let the experts do there job and when the report come out and if it flaky and suspious then we can spek on it as a New Yorker who city was torn apart by 9-11 and now we have our country divided over the 9-11 findings let not see that happen here

it's a debate - and without it there might be not an investigation and report. Let people talk and put pressure on those at power

This is not a debate - this is a news forum. If you want to debate please go to the thread set up for that in the General Forum. Thanks.
