DNP to mark Global Tiger Day

BANGKOK, 17 July 2017 (NNT) - The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) will organize an activity on July 29 International Tiger Day, aiming to increase the country's tiger population by 50 percent within the year 2022.

DNP Director General Thanya Netithammakul said that the DNP will organize an activity to mark International Tiger Day, which falls on 29 July of each year, to raise awareness of conserving tigers among all sectors, as the number of tigers is an abundance indicator of forest ecosystems.

The DNP and the Foundation for Khao Yai National Park Protection will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the conservation of tigers in Dong Phaya Yen - Khao Yai forest and wild animals will be released to Thap Lan National Park, he said.

There are currently about 200 tigers in Thailand and they are most densely populated along the Tanaosri mountain range in the western forest area of the country and scattered in some areas of the Dong Phaya Yen - Khao Yai forest, said the DNP Director General.

He stressed that Thailand has continued implementing the national tiger population recovery plan by increasing the number of tiger population in the target area by 50 percent by 2022.
