Fates Of 2 Former PMS Hinge On August Verdicts

BANGKOK — Two former leaders allied to ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra face up to 10 years in prison if the court rules against them next month in two historic cases.

 

Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, is standing trial for a rice subsidy programthat reportedly cost the state billions of baht, while his brother-in-law, Somchai Wongsawat, was also tried for ordering a crackdown on anti-government protests nearly a decade ago.

will be a very interesting month, dont think it matters which way the verdict goes, it will p*ss off people anyway, as long as they stick to the rule of law and go with the evidence. Problem is many refuse to accept the truth here in most cases, easier to start riots etc if it doesnt go your way as we have seen time and again

Clearly political accusations and probably unpopular ones at that. It would be quite ironic if the persecution of these people and the pretty much predictable verdicts light the candle to incense the masses and bring down the unelected Government. I think very few are fooled that either of these cases is legitimate, and with people being told NOT to attend Yinglucks case, quite the opposite is very possible. A coup to bring down the coup? Anything is possible in this crazy country!

Are the junta setting a precedent here? If Wongsawat is found guilty of ordering a crackdown on demonstrators causing death and the red shirts react with demonstrations, then the junta orders a crackdown as a result are they opening themselves up to prosecution for the same offence if anyone is killed?

It's the same question for much of what they've done. Amnesties for themselves, amongst the array of other 'inoffences' of their own, don't appear party to laws of physics in their mystical parallel universe known as the Thai establishment. Apparently, defying gravity is easy as long as you suck up to the Chinese.
