UDON THANI: -- Entry to the popular Sirisutto Temple in Udon Thani province has been banned until Thursday because of the worst flooding in 46 years.

Floodwater is one metre deep and rising at the temple, better known as Wat Pa Kham Chanot. The monastery usually draws big crowds, particularly lottery buyers who come to pray for lucky numbers.

“We have already banned entry to the temple during the ongoing flooding,” Bang Dung district chief Weerawat Wongsriraksa said on Tuesday. “The water level inside is about neck-height.”

The canal around the temple, which sits on a small islet, is even deeper.

Weerawat said the gate in front of the temple is now closed and locked.

Locals have said the ongoing flood is the worst since 1973.
