Hi all,

I just found out my second ACL reconstruction wasn't 100% successful (the first 2 were done outside of Thailand). We used the hamstring graft of the same leg for the first operation in 2009 and then the patellar of the same leg for the second in 2014.

To put it lightly, I am bummed and a bit hesitant to do a third surgery (we are looking at taking a graft from my good leg, or an allograft). Any recommendations on surgeons? Price shouldn't be an issue with my insurance. I met with Dr. Channarong at Bumrungrad the other day and I will be meeting with Dr. Panya at the same hospital tomorrow.

Cheers,

There are no allografts in Thailand. They don't have a tissue matching service.

I found Dr. Panya to be very helpful and extremely knowledgeable, but I think anyone in Orthopedics and Bumrungrad would probably be of a high caliber.

Thanks for the reply Monomial.  Things may have recently changed as Dr. Channarong told there that there are now 2 places offering allografts in Thailand. Price I was quoted only for the graft was between 500,000-700,000 baht (1.1 billion for the whole surgery). That said, I am definitely planning to proceed with an autograft myself. My only concern is the recovery, as both legs will have issues. Guess I will be wheelchair bound for a bit as I wouldn't have a "strong" leg to lean on while using crutches.

My initial feeling after meeting Dr. Channarong was really good. He seemed caring, knowledgeable and really seemed to know what I was going through (good days and bad days after the last surgery). However, I can't find much information on him online. Would love to hear if anyone has experience with him.  On the other hand, when I looked around the internet, Dr. Panya's name came up much more frequently.

I've had 2 less than stellar ACL reconstructions and just want to make sure I choose  the best surgeon I can find. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Thanks for that information Shanemac. A very useful data point. Based on the price it sounds like someone has set up an agreement to get the grafts from overseas and have them flown in.

You have my sincerest sympathies though. That's everyone's worst nightmare. You're sure the existing graft is completely blown? You say it is not 100%. Does that mean only a partial tear? Honestly, if it is a partial tear and you aren't planning on running marathons I might consider just having it trimmed and use a brace for any heavy activity.

What you are talking about is going to be absolutely no fun at all.
