Ford EcoSport.........

My wife came home after a hundred kilometer trip in her new Ford. I met her at the gate and asked her how she liked her Ford. She actually gave it a hug and told me that she loved it. I have driven it a few times and the only complaint I have is that the sewing machine engine buzzes during acceleration. Not exactly noisy but the little engine (1.5 liter) seems overworked and lacks power. Since she drives like a grandma, it doesn't bother her. I was impressed with the lack of road noise. It is a lot quieter than the old Focus was. The fuel gage barely moved using E85, so far it looks like it will be economical.

I did buy the service plan for 17,900 baht, another decent discount. It covers 7 regular services of 10,000 kilometers or every nine months. Maybe the best part of the deal is that the purchase was interest free and included a decent discount. I was a little surprised that when she went back to the dealer to pay for the service plan, they gave her a little gold necklace. A quarter baht of gold so not a big deal but about a 5,000 baht value.

How overworked is the 1.2 litre 3 cylinder in the Almera then?

I hope the "overworked" thingy has nothing to do with the trans....

So far the transmission is faultless and very smooth. About the only way you can tell that shifting has occurred is by the sound of the engine.

I don't know for sure but I would guess that Almera is totally gutless as are all the cars with the tiny engines. The bottom line depends on how you drive. Some drivers, like my wife, have no appreciation of the actually unneeded power.

I hired the Almera for a week and it's a terrible car. Far too underpowered for a car of that size. Driving around the hills of Pai it could barely get up the steeper slopes.

Me too.

I thought I was driving something from the 70s. Awful PoS.

Hopefully Ford will be able to dispense with the old 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 engines for the forthcoming Fiestas and Ecosports as the 1.0 turbo triple is a far superior engine and loves being thrashed. It'd be nice if they put the 1.5 turbo four in some of the Fiestas and Ecosports, but I think the govt would ban them for being too much fun.

Ford discontinued the 1.0EcoBoost engine because Thais don't like small engines ... well that is what I was told by a Ford "Product Specialist" ....

Yes, there are a few ignorant nationalities who think bigger is better, but change for the better is coming and people all over are going to have to get used to smaller, more powerful, more efficient engines, before their eventual demise.

Put me in the ignorant class. My mind cannot accept that a hopped up turbocharged three cylinder one liter engine is going to hold up as well and a larger displacement engine. There has to be a limit as to how small you can go, how much power you can wring out of it and still be reliable.

The dragster people are able to get 1,500 HP out of a V-8 but they don't last long. Those fully blown engines blow up in a spectacular show of smoke and flames.

Gary ... it's called progress ... look here https://fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11402325  We can now machine to very fine tolerances and have better materials ... engines last longer now  than in the '40s and '50s when  30,000 miles was good.

We actually have a Fiesta EcoBoost, bought it in 2015 (built in 2013!). They were giving 100Kthb off the price at the time ... so far no transmission problems. It's has the latest TCM software. Only problem so far was that the water pump leaked ... a common problem. Quite a strip down to get to it!

For 1Ltr it is quick, a little strange to drive at first and you have to have a well controlled foot.

Only time will tell whether I will rue the decision ..........

The Ecoboost engines produce around 120hp per Liter.  The 3 cylinder is smaller than most but the specific output is not terribly different to direct injection turbos from other manufacturers like BMW, Audi, Mercedes and more recently Mazda, Nissan and Honda.  Seems plenty of manufacturers think modern engines at this output can last long enough to avoid warranty issues and owner backlash.
