Legalizing Thailand's Sex Industry Unfathomable

I hate to say this, but I agree with those who say that those below a certain line in the system of hierarchy are effectively disposable. I don't disapprove of prostitution, but I disapprove of a national attitude toward the unnecessary of quality education and the uneven distribution of opportunity that leaves many with very few options. A woman should not be left so desperate as I see many. A few simple social policies, like a system forcing men, even on threat of jail, to contribute to the upbringing of the children they procreate, would make a big difference.

I do not think being a destination for Sex tourism is good for Thailand. Of course prostitution cannot be rooted out, but a wise Nation follows a path of harm reduction.

First the major foreign oriented fleshpots, Cowboy , Nana, Walking Street Pattaya, Patpong should be shuttered or re-tasked as shopping areas. That does not stop prostitution either.Whoremongers will pick up a girl (or ladyboy or gay) at McDonalds, a booksellers, behind the makeup counter at Robinson, on the street. etc.

What is needed is targeted raids and arrests of foreigners cavorting with Thai sex workers. The courts then hand out the typical long custodial sentences and crazy fines. Make a few examples to rot in gaol 20 years.

Thailand will then be known internationally as a place where the so-called "sex tourist" risks life ruining fines and long stays in Thai jail. Sex pests will travel elsewhere and the problems they feed eliminated.

you are so perspicacious....so true...in fact why not start right away and track down the pedophiles who indulge in child sex within the catholic clergy in the west?...

is so concerned about pretending it isn't there

thai leaders' hypocrisy, based on current  and the previous 2 generations' societal values, and remarkable inability to accept criticism are scuttling this country

K. Pravit is so typically Thai.....he feels unsettled with prostitution in Thailand....yet often referred to as the oldest trade.

Thailand has by some estimates 125K---200K hookers.....no-one can pretend it doesn't happen here!

Thailand is no place for puritans....the sex industry cannot be brushed under the carpet, especially when so many of Thailand' influential are in the business.....either openly or covertly.

How about all the Thai business men taking schoolgirls and boys to short stays. Does that count? Is this the country that invented short stays?

Isn't prostitution natural?

An exchange of services between two people for profit and pleasure.

What idiot made it illegal in the first place.

?

Paying for sex is not, strictly speaking, illegal but paying for sex from schoolchildren is.

Yes, we are discussing two different categories of course. Sex with minors is illegal. Most girls up our way are pregnant by 16 or 15. Partnered or not. How do you deal with sexually mature youngsters, who will do anything to get their school fees or help their ageing parents or grandparents?

The whole issue is so out of control due to the poverty and the refusal by government to do anything constructive other than initiate draconian laws and fine the desperate "victims" involved and imprison as many people as possible.

The answer in a high tech country like America is, privatise prisons and make money out of incarceration and misery.

Meanwhile these idiot pontificators worry about legal age prostitution. What's going on?

We have a girl there who has 4 children by the time she is 15. The prostitution market includes most online dating sites where many of these girls are seeking "any" relationship they can get with some kindly gent up to 90 years old.

No easy answers here, but the attitude at the top is total hypocrisy and very short on imagination. Just knee jerking and face saving.

Political St Vitus dancing.
