When i stick it into the hub on my monitor, I hear the ping-pong sound of new device attached.

I cannot find the d****d thing in the root directory though. Why? (Windows XP).

I know it works and there are files on it that i can reach at the internet cafe...

Root directory, you mean under "My computer" right ?

Click Start=>Run and type in "compmgmt.msc" without the quotes and enter.

In there go to disk management.

Can you see it in there ?

If so, what's the status of your disk ?

Ah! I see it there!

It is idle. (enabled)

How do i get from there to the file browser...?

AH! Found it! SCroll down to Disk management in Computer management browser! Thank you :o

File format is FAT...

I wonder whether i can get it to be ntfs?

Converting to NTFS isn't a good idea, but can be done.

From MSDN blog:

Go to Device Manager and set the policy of the USB Stick device to "Optimize for Performance". The default is to optimize for Quick Removal, which restricts you to the FAT filesystem.

If you do this, then you absolutely must go through the the annoying removal dialog to unmount the filesystem before unplugging the drive. If you don't, then you have a good chance of losing data.
