Cantilever Bathroom Extension

Recommended Posts

My en suite bathroom is small - too small to add a bath tub - so I've been wondering about extending it.  Some neighbours a few years ago added a cantilever bathroom extension, doubling the size of their bathroom.  Much to my surprise it hasn't collapsed, or even cracked.  I was wondering whether anyone here had experience of getting a similar extension and would be prepared to share their thoughts.  How risky is this sort of extension? What are the pitfalls? From a builders' point of view, is it a highly skilled job?

Thanks.

remember , a gal of water weighs about   8.3 lbs and a bathtub holds about 80 gal so you are looking at about 800 lbs bathtub and water weight .

Did your neighbor place a bathtub on his cantilever?

Do you really mean a cantilever or just a supported deck? Or some sort of supported balcony?

A cantilever normally has to be designed from the outset as the weight needs to be carried through to some beam in the rest of the structure.

A picture of the outside of your neighbour's construction might help.
