I guess this has been answered many a time....

I am a "serial" border runner, currently on my third stamp since the rules changed. When this expires, I realise I must leave the country to get a tourist visa.

I will be doing this in Laos, via bus, either to Nong Khai or to Mudkhahan. I wanted to go from my home up to Bangkok and then travel overnight - so can I get a visa for Laos on the border at either crossing and what is the cost?? I realise it would be cheaper in BKK but I don't really want to stay there for a night....

Also, am I right in assuming that all I can get from the embassies/consulates is a tourist visa as things stand. I am returning to the UK in June, when I will apply for a longer visa, but for now am using my 3 exemption stamps, tourist visa and extension, back to exemption stamps to cover the time period from the law change until I leave for the UK. Am I right in assuming, as things stand, that this will be possible????

Many thanks

KC

You can get your visa to Laos at the border and it now costs $35US for 30 days (don't forget your passport photo).

You should be able to obtain a single entry tourist visa with an overnight stay but I doubt you qualify for anything else from your post; if that is what you were asking.

As for the return to entry without visa we can only guess at this point as we do not know how the start/end of the 180 days will be determined. I don't know.

Yes. Laos loves the baht.

If you want any type of visa from that embassy make sure you have all the documents in perfect order - they refuse a lot of people there. The tourist visa should be OK.

Even though I love spending a few days in Vientienne, I go to other places rather than risk problems with the Thai embassy staff in Laos...I was once turned down for a work visa for no reason at all - was accepted with the same documents elsewhere. I am not the only one to have had problems there.

(They have a very bad attitude at that embassy. Another time I turned up at 12.00 on the dot to apply for a visa, my train from Bangkok was late, and they offered zero help. Other embassies can be kind and willing to help, but not this one.)

Take dollars, 35 dollars is about 1,254 baht, if you pay in baht they want 1,700 baht so you save around 445 baht if you pay in dollars. :o

Another question abot same border, need Thai-members passport and/or Visa to cross the border to Laos?

I was told that if you arrive by plane you can get a visa in all most all cases but if you arrive by road they can get funny.

Does anyone have any information on this?

It appears that they charge at the landborder what they like.

For sure they not take USD , prepare at least THB 1500.- to THB 1800.- for the Laos Visa.

Philipines,Vietnam,Malaysia and Singaporean are free to enter Laos.

The VOA for Laos is given at all international checkpoints, and that includes the Friendship bridge Nongkhai and the airport in Vientiane.

They can get funny only when you woke them up.

Is it correct you can get a 30 day Laos visa at the border? I was under the impression it was 15 days at the border or 30 days from a Laos embassy.

You now get a 30 day visa at the border for 35 USD or 1,700 baht (UK and US citizens) it is a different fee for citizens of other countries up to a maximum of 42 USD for some countries. Visa Runner posted that they do not take US dollars, this is not the case, I often cross the border at Nong Khai on shopping trips and always pay for the visa in US dollars which is the prefered currency for Laos.

Thanks PREM-R, although as a former Forest season ticket holder it pains me to say that!
