U.S. considers reduction in cultural exchange visas - WSJ

(Reuters) - President Donald Trump's administration is considering reducing visas for U.S. cultural and work exchange programs, including au pairs and summer workers, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

Trump, a former New York real estate magnate who has relied on seasonal workers at his hotels and resorts, campaigned on promises to restore American jobs.

The Wall Street Journal said the U.S. government was eyeing "major reductions" for five of the employment-based cultural exchange visas in the J-1 visa program, citing unnamed sources.

The J-1 program also includes visas for university students, but the WSJ said those were not under examination for cuts.

A U.S. State Department fact sheet says the J-1 visa program has 15 categories that provide "opportunities for around 300,000 foreign visitors per year to experience U.S. society and culture."

The State Department said it did not have an immediate comment on the report on Sunday evening.

There are plenty of opportunities, outside the country, to experience U.S. society and culture...McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC, etc.   Or a fast-track invasion for the full immersive experience.

Donald Trump and his minions are completely off base and ignorant. No American is going to do these jobs in place of foreigners as the jobs are low paid. There will be a resultant shortage of workers. the same is happening in the agriculture fields where there is a shortage of laborers because there is no type of Visa that can be legally applied for and illegals are afraid of being deported.  Again, no Americans lining up for these jobs.

Trump is a fool and an incompetent- he hasn't done a day's work in his life and is destroying everything America stands for.

Just reading, " A People's History of the United States". Well, documented reminder of the need for low-cost immigrant labor (their being "used" by business is another matter). Birth rates down, OK automation up. Care to read and think if it is really a ) sum or if we will still need immigrant labor?

Moronic, as usual, from the clown potus.

Plays to his isolationist, xenophobic base.

The state department is now very underfunded and understaffed.

Another example of the SOFT power that has in the past been so important to sell brand USA internationally being trashed by this dangerous, mentally bizarre, authoritarian sleazeball.

Day by day, the damage it does continues.

Every message Trump sends; Every policy he puts into place; Every order he signs shows how completely ignorant of History he is but he has no vision of the future. America was built on immigrants.  Those immigrants who come to America on a short term basis and get a positive picture of America return to their own country and spread a positive word. Many of them become business owners or professional people and support America through tourism and buying American made products.

Trump is as the previous poster stated playing to  his base who sees every foreigner as a potential terrorist or as someone stealing an American job. Nothing could be further from the truth- yet Trump himself believes this because he has a perverted World view.  He is more  in line with the thinking of the bigots and isolationists who want to wall off America from the rest of the World. It's ironic Trump comes from New York where he built his real estate empire off the backs of immigrants many who are illegal.  He knows damn well Americans will not work for the wages he paid  yet he refuses to refute the ridiculous and biased mindset of his base followers.

If he lasts 4 years as President I will be surprised and if he does last without being impeached or resign- God help the country.

Maybe the jobs wouldn't be low paid if the wealthy couldn't import cheap labor to drive down the wages for those who would be very happy to do the work, if only they could afford to live on the pay.

There are literally thousands of jobs open for Americans to work in the agricultural fields of California and Arizona; picking fruit or grapes or lettuce in all the growing states; also laborer jobs on construction sites; working in poultry processing plants. They all pay minimum wage. Why aren't Americans lined up to do these jobs or working in McDonalds or Burger King or the other service industries.  the answer is Americans refuse to work at these jobs and therefore immigrant labor is essential.

Let's say that all  of the aforementioned employers would raise the hourly pay to $15.00 per hour which is close to a living wag in America.  Immediately the cost of all agricultural products would go up as well as your visits to the fast food outlets.  Americans still won't do these jobs. The work is too hard and the hours too long. Of course the wealthy remain wealthy off the backs of the poor. That's why Donald Trump is wealthy. Your I phone is made in China. Are your willing to give it up until they move the plants to America?

The issue of redistribution of wealth is entirely different issue and Trump will never approve a tax plan that takes money from the wealthy and redistributes it to the poor and middle class. He is way too selfish to do this and his wealthy supporters would never allow it.
