Teacher seeks donations for monk who cares for strays

By The Nation

A teacher in Ayutthaya province is seeking donations from the public for a monk who has been caring for more than 100 abandoned dogs and cats at his temple.

Sukanya Promhom, a teacher at Wat Maruekhathayawan School in Tambon Thep Mongkol in Ayutthaya’s Bang Sai district, said she felt sorry for Phra Rassamee Charuthammo, 42, who has been taking care of the dogs and cats at the temple all alone.

Sukanya said she has been teaching at the school in the temple compound and has been seeing the monk preparing food for the cats and dogs. She urged the public to lend a helping hand through donations to help the monk.

The monk said he has been spending Bt10,000 a month from his own account to buy food for the dogs and cats.

He said the number of the animals under his care was not high three years ago but an increasing number of cats and dogs had been abandoned at the temple in recent years.

When I first read the title I thought that's really nice caring for stray monks... will be busy!  then I read on...

There is temple in pattaya full of dogs, people donate fortunes there yet dog are starwing and get nothing.

The monk has his own bank account and money? I thought they were supposed to give up material things.  Also the dogs and cats there should be found homes, not just left and fester in the temple... and they need to sort out the 'growing number' of them... otherwise in a few years the place will be infested with them and they will want more and more money.

The monk should be concentrating on his spirituality, not on worldly things like bank accounts, raising money and taking care a large numbers of dogs and cats.

How about a spay and neuter fund ? These animals just keep reproducing and 100 will produce thousands more in the next few years. Take care of the problem first.

Feeding strays should be a crime if not also neutering them.

And thats why feeding and trying to help strays does exactly what you wanted to avoid (more animals being left behind and suffering).

People see you take care of the animals so they will dump their misbehaving dog at your temple and buy a cute little puppy to take its place for a year or 2 until that one will end up at your temple also.

How about exterminating all the stray dogs and cats and donating the money to homeless children, a far better cause.

Of course.  People are not going to donate money to buy food for fat, happy dogs.

Money that is given to people is not the problem. There are two ways of fixing the problem.

1. Create homes for dogs, with people that can create nice versions that like their owners. Then sell them to people that want to take care.
2. Shot them off in bundles.

Maybe that will ensure that a 3 year old will not need 24 stiches and fighting for his live in the hospital next time.

Yes the money will do far more good in a fixed deposit
