French Police Watch as 1000 Illegal Migrants Head for UK

A fresh flotilla of migrants set off for Britain from northern France, with provisional estimates overnight suggesting up to 1,000 people may have attempted the crossing on one of the busiest Channel days this year.

The move came a day after Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Labour’s approach to illegal migration was “working”, as figures for daily crossings were expected to be published later.

Gendarmes Told People Not To Intervene

Footage and reporting from the Opal Coast near Neufchâtel-Hardelot, south of Calais, described chaotic scenes after a dinghy carrying about 60 migrants, including children, ran aground close to shore.

Some passengers pushed at the boat to get it into deeper water, and fighting broke out as people struggled for space. Videos and witnesses said men pulled each other’s hair, and one person whipped others using a belt. Several migrants were also described as becoming aggressive towards journalists and members of the public.

Reporters said around ten to 12 gendarmes watched from the shallow area without moving into the water to intervene. One officer was recorded saying: “Our order is to let them go”, while another reportedly told those nearby that officers could only warn people that it was dangerous.

Labour ministers have previously said they persuaded French authorities to ease rules to allow officers to seize migrants in the shallows, and the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has linked further funding to new enforcement tactics. Under a payment-by-results agreement announced for France, UK payments can be withheld if police fail to deliver value.

Crossings Drop But Volume Remains High

The last time the daily number of Channel crossings reached four figures was last October, when 1,075 people crossed. More than 13,007 migrants have reached the UK by small boat this year, down 45% on the same period in 2025, according to official totals cited in reporting.

In addition to Neufchâtel-Hardelot, other attempts were described elsewhere along the coast. At Wimereux, reporters said around 100 migrants arrived at about 05:30 local time to try to board a larger vessel waiting offshore after being taken out by smaller RIBs; roughly 80 then got on board while others, including two women and three children, were forced back to shore.

At Gravelines, reports said about 100 migrants scrambled along the sand to board a dinghy, with French authorities in a rescue lifeboat appearing to hand out life jackets.

Further north, at Berck-sur-Mer, the day’s attempt followed days after a Sudanese man was stabbed to death near Berck-sur-Mer before a separate dinghy carrying a record 165 people sailed for Kent. Prosecutors in France have not confirmed a motive for the stabbing, and a murder investigation continues.

Home Office Response To Claims Of Weak Enforcement

Reacting to a video posted by Conservative shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, the UK Home Office said it was aware of claims that French law enforcement had failed to prevent crossings.

It said UK-French co-operation had stopped more than 46,000 attempted Channel crossings since the election and that in May 65% of small-boat events were prevented despite higher temperatures. The Home Office added that removals of small boat migrants were at record levels and that asylum claims were down 12%.

It also said almost 70,000 people who were in the UK illegally had been removed or deported, an increase of 41% year-on-year, and that the Government was “going further” to remove incentives drawing migrants to Britain.

The Home Office said a landmark payment-by-results deal has been signed with France to boost enforcement on beaches and target people smugglers.

I am quite sure they have schools in Morocco that the children can attend................wait, why are we talking about Children again ?

This about adult Moroccan men illegally entering Spain, its nothing to do with children

If you're going to but in Nick please read the thread properly. I pointed out that to someone complaining about feeding and housing refugees and in particular their issue with, and I quote:

"Education: Children aged 5 to 17 are required and given the right to attend local free state schools"

Someone had an issue with that. The children didn't ask to be there.

So you would let them starve and punish their children by denying them basic human rights such as education? Says a lot about you, but you're a Trumpist so it makes sense.

I assume you have never heard of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

UN Declaration of Human Rights... yes that's another kettle of fish! Applies to certain humans and situations and totally absent on other major calamities! An extremely choosy declaration.

Id class a free house, free iphone, expedited free dental & medical care and spending money "benefits". Perhaps your definition of the word differs?

No-one gets free iPhones or expedited anything. Illegal migrants do not get free houses either. You are making this all up (or swallowing what you are told more likely).

Asylum seekers get basic accommodation and a small allowance until their cases are heard when they are either granted asylum, or refused and deported (the majority). They do get medical treatment.

It is a universal human rights law that they need to be fed and kept alive until their cases are complete. Every other bit of nonsense you have digested (free iPhones for example) is made up.

The long lost of benefits Asylum seekers was posted , it was you who ignored the whole list apart from the bit involving children .

Why did you focus on children ?

And who pays for all your pipe dreams in the real world, not the rosy garden you live in?

The government does, as we are a signatory to the UK Declaration on Human Rights and have been since 1948. You probably think it is half of our GDP and that's why the NHS is so bad and why trains don't run on time.

We spend 0.1% of GDP on asylum seekers, it is nothing in the scheme of things. It doesn't even come close to government waste in dozens of areas. Scrapped projects alone cost more than that each year. It doesn't affect your quality of life, no government services are suffering to pay for it.

Would it be better if that cost wasn't there? Yes! Would you notice any difference? Absolutely not.

I did address it Nick, I mentioned the subsistence allowance and accommodation, but thought denying schooling to children was worth highlighting.

Again, if you are going to but in do try and read the thread. Thank you.

I have no idea, I made no comment on that. What made them risk their lives to swim five miles to a tiny little island - and then get sent back. Honestly, I don't know.

And as a 'benefit ' should be tax exempt.

But real UK benefits can be taxed I believe. If in any year you receive earned income and benefits then the total income (income+benefits) is taxed. That is my understanding. Of course state pension (benefit) counts as income for tax purposes.

But if you add up all of the 0.1 percents I bet they come to a sizable figure. So you could just argue that 0.1% is nothing so just ignore the myriad of 0.1%s

So come on then provide the "real" information from your "real world". Where's your link to free houses and iPhones for illegal immigrants? Shouldn't be hard to paste in a reply?

No one's ignoring it. But people talk as though it is 10-20%. It is a pittance in the overall scheme of things. 0.1% to comply with our obligations to universal human rights is nothing.

Of course if we could save that 0.1% that would be great, but not at the expense of starving people or denying children an education.

And why was it only men fleeing? Where were the women and children, guess we will never know that too.

One thing we do know, the women in the middle east must be hard as nails, left to fight the wars whilst their husbands run away.

Yeah, it would make more sense to send the women and children ahead on the dangerous crossing, so if they get asylum then the husbands can follow.

Let's have some transparency. The cost of accommodation, food, and basic support allowances in 2024 was £5.38billion. In 2025 it was £4.billion. This does not include additional expenses such as healthcare, social services support, administration and policing.

An initial decision on an asylum caseusually takes about 6 months. It often takes up to a year. Then there is the appeal process if the migrant does not accept a ruling. These can take another 1-2 years. The UK has a reported 80,000 cases under appeal. The UK does not have a high deportation rate. According to the Migrant Observatory

-Approx 50% of refused asylum seekers who applied between 2010 and 2022 are still in the UK.

-Only 4% of people who arrived by small boat from 2018 to 2025 were returned from the UK during that period

They come, they play the system and they do not leave.

The UK National Debt interest payment is almost 25 times more than the entire spend on asylum seekers per annum.

Where in this report does it mention 0.1% of GDP on housing asylum seekers. If that literally just housing them or all benefits

What's so incredibly attractive in the UK for these illegal migrants? Why not set up camp in France or Belgium? The UK at any cost?

They come from your former colonies and speak your language, quite simply.

Those who come from the former French colonies remain in France; there are also several millions.
