mac.wheeler Posted August 6, 2007 Author Posted August 6, 2007 Isn't the CAT based out of the main Post office in Nathon? Post office Nathon: 077-421-013 Thanks sbk, unfortunately the number the guy from the post office gave me just leads to a recorded message. I can't believe I have just spent 5 hours chasing this. I just checked my phone and I have made 42 calls. Hutch - Impossible to contact, main contact numbers just loop recorded messages, dealers (I rang them all) don't answer the phone. Cat - Website doesn't even work, no contact numbers, sales line just loops a recorded message, stockists have no clue about the products. If there is a better Internet solution than GPRS on KPG (unless you happen to be an an ADSL area) then it is far above my ability to find it. What a shocking way to do business though, 2 major national telecoms companies that cannot be contacted. Then again TIT.
sbk Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Have you tried a man named Taweep who owns Island View Cabana? He came around last year selling a CAT wireless phone (not sure what the technology was, sorry) , sorry no idea of his number or if he is still involved but if you feel like having a look around the island, drive up to Mae Haad and see if he is still involved. His english is good, so no worries there.

Yep called him this morning, he's on the mainland until tonight he's gonna pop around and demo tomorrow, but I got sidetracked by this mythical 800kbps service. The phone uses the CDMA network. They also sell a dongle that does the same, looking for one of those is where this all started
sbk Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Be sure to let us know how it goes. And what technology he is actually selling, I don't have the brochure he brought round last year so no idea what it is.
mac.wheeler Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 Ok I had the demo this morning and purchased it then and there. It uses CDMA (older tech than EDGE) but it works, I am getting a stead 15-19KBps connection with no fluctuations, with EDGE it was between 3KBps and 16KBps with major fluctuations. Additionally my latency has decreased four fold. Average ping times to the UK on EDGE were almost 2 seconds! I'm down to about 500ms now, I can even play GuildWars again! (ok I'm a geek online gamer sometimes) I have used a proxy accelerator for a long time (www.propel.com 1 week free trial give it a try it's great) and combined with the new CDMA phone the performance figures from Propel show me getting a simulated 1MBps connection whilst surfing (it only accelerates HTTP it won't speed up FTP or P2P downloads). The phone cost 7k Baht, 590 Baht a month for unlimited internet. I've used IPstar on KPG - This is better, at times IPstar was faster but it was not consistent. I've used ADSL on KPG - TOT are extremely unreliable, some days don't even work at all. I've used GPRS on KPG - Slow slow slow slow slow. I've used EDGE on KPG - Slow fast slow fast slow fast slow - average it out, not that great, probably about 7KBps. Now I am using this CDMA, it won't win any raw speed awards but it's consistent, I would rather have 15KBps 24/7 then 1Mbs at 4am when nobody else is using it and 4KBps the rest of the time (TOT style). If anybody wants the phone number of the guy who sells this on the island then drop me a PM and I'll give you the number, not sure if I'm allowed to post it here. And I urge anyone using a slow connection to check out www.propel.com it really is very good, I've used it for over a year now and even over dialup it makes things a lot faster.
mac.wheeler Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 Mac, so you don't need a modem? Nope, the whole phone unit plugs into the PC via USB and acts as a modem. It also works as a phone, you get a new phone number as part of the package, 1Baht per minute within Thailand. Although you can't use the phone whilst connected to the net. I'm actually really impressed, it works well, ok not the fastest thing out there but beats everything I've used on KPG except ADSL on a good day and ADSL is just not available to some of us. I did consider just buying the USB dongle, 12500Baht with a years free internet (have to get from Samui) but I had reservations regarding the reception, it's a tiny USB device with no visible arial, this phone terminal has a big antenna.
sbk Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 mac, I just ran the speed test off the thaivisa server and got these results (spotty DSL, 7km from town) Download Speed: 214 kbps (26.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 73 kbps (9.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
sbk Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 next question, can it run more than one pc? ie, I have my laptop getting a wireless signal from a bridge, and two desktops plugged in. Reason I am interested is our DSL cuts out at 6:30 every evening when all the street lights come on. Would also be interested in how it performs during heavy rains. Hoping you will be the guinea pig and not mind reporting back

Hoping you will be the guinea pig and not mind reporting back 110kbps 13.8KBps download 83kbps 10.4KBps upload So not ADSL download speeds of course, but far better than dialup or GPRS for those of us who can't get ADSL. Nice upload speed compared to ADSL, good for people like me who have to upload a lot for work. It is possible to share the connection using XP ICS, but the PC connected to the device would need to be switched on and connected to allow the other PC's to use the internet. I'll let you know about the rain Also the phone has a battery, so if power goes off, the phone still works, again cool if you use a laptop, you can keep working.
