Bus fares to increase

BANGKOK: -- This is good news for private bus operators in Bangkok, but bad news for passengers.

The Supreme Administrative Court on Wednesday cancelled the injunction issued by the Central Administrative Court against the increase of bus fares in Bangkok.

The today's ruling will allow the private bus operators in Bangkok to increase their fares, which is expected to start Thursday or Friday.

The injunction by the Central Administrative Court had put on hold the increase of the bus since May.

Following the injunction, the private bus operators went on strike for a day, causing chaos in Bangkok particularly for students and commuters.

This is going to be difficult for a lot of poorer folks, who are already struggling.

I wonder, however, when gas prices will affect things enough that there is car pooling of children to school, instead of the 1 child per car policy that now seems to operate!

car pool ?... i have the feeling that in times of difficulties it becomes even more 'cool' to show off your wealth ... hence the 1 child per car policy might (unfortunately) prevail ... and they will try (if it's possible) to drop off their kid even closer to the school entrance (you don't want them to walk, poor things !)

Good new for private operators of course! All their buses in poor, shooty condition and probably have never been repaired since they've been bought. They most likey don't have maintance costs, and the only expense they probably pay are are fuel and employee costs. If they want to raise fares then force the operators to make the buses safer. And put the drivers in training so the don't drive like its race.
