Avg Anti Virus

I've been using AVG's "AntiVir Personal Edition Classic" (free) for a couple of months now. Seems to work fine except when it comes to "updates". Every week or so I do the "check for updates" and invariably there is an "update available". However each and every time this update seems to include a complete download of a newer scan engine which means that each and every time the download size is around 3.5 MB+. On my "slow" connection this is a bit of a pain. Having been a past user of McAfee and Norton, I did not experience this and the only updates I had to be concerned with was basically, virus definitions.

For example again today I checked for updates and my current scan engine is 6.31.0.9 and the latest internet update is 6.31.01.00. So it wants me to download 3,593 Kbyte. I just did this about a week ago to get it to 631.0.9.

I was going to try and check with the support for AVG but it seems to be mostly German and, well I did take a semester of German in college back in '68

Anyone here using AVG and having similar problem or is it just me?

My computer is running Windows XP Home Version and all updates to Service Pack 2.

I tried using AVG but have some sort of problems so i turns to Avast Pro...auto updates,,,And also they have the Avast Free

Well I am in a very similar situation to you but I really like AVG.

The updates are so quick. Just done one today and it took about 8 seconds on a dial up modem.

Using XP Pro but I doubt if that is the reason.

The download file size, is it in bytes or bits ?

Once you have made that rather large download are you also installing it from it's downloaded location, or just repeating the process over and over? That is what it sounds like to me. I have used the program for ages and it has never even coughed since I have had it. Saved my bacon couple of times when all other failed.

Ive got AVG installed never had any problems with the updates.......normally download the update in 10 secs or so.

Same here, updates itself every 4-5 days, file sizes are usually 1-200k

Just did my update (it did not do it automatically though) with no problems. I suggest you un-install and re-install to ensure you have the newest version. Cheers!

No, I'm not doing anything further after the download. The "message" says that that everything has been installed and is now up to date. And indeed, I now have the newer version numbers showing in the "help" "about" tabs. Just for "fun" I try doing another update on the internet and the message comes back and says everything is already up to date (at least for another week or so )

Thetyim: that last update today was 3,593 Kbyte (not bits). It's not a "huge" problem for me, but....anyway thanks for the replies.

How did you get it to "update itself"? I have been unable to find any way of setting it up for automatic updates.

you need to update avast a they discover a major vulnerability in a few of their product.

for AVG that I quit because of the poor "cleaning" power of this antivirus, although it tells you where the infected file(s) is(are) ...

then clean yourself

anyway, set it to be updated everyday at the time you are (often) connected.

ie; used to be connected in the evening from 6pm to 11pm, set it to update at 7pm everyday

and forget about the long time spent on waiting ...

besides, do you have the latest version, you mention version 6.31.0.9, AVG said that they will not support version 6 and put the latest 7.03 for free ...

uninstall your current version, download the latest and install it.

but fot your peace of mind, I would go for something else than avg, but it's only my opinion ...

efficient without being too intrusive: Kapersky and BitDefender ... all the others are too heavy.

Maybe the new version is better.

Well, darn...duh me. I have now just realized that I don't have AVG. I have something called "AntiVir Personal Edition Classic-Guard". Must have had a few two many Changs. And whatever it is that I have doesn't have any kind of scheduler.

Well maybe I will get rid of this one and try the real AVG. Oh and I have previously tried BitDefender and didn't care that much for it. Oh well.

I'm sure my AVG updates itself every day - as it says at the bottom of the window. I can't remember how to get to that setting though.

I once got a really big update, but usually it's over and done with in less than a minutes (on dial-up).

OK, found it: click on "Scheduler", then at the bottom of the window, click on "Scheduled Tasks". Then, the second window - that I've placed below the main window - opens and you can adjust the timings of the updates (which is exactly what TizMe said ).

For some reason I thought AVG is what I was using, but in actuality I was using an antivirus from one of the links in the "pinned" thread from "Bizz". It was free-av.com. And the site is mostly all in German, so no wonder I was confused (well that and/or too many Changs).
