I am engaged to a beautiful thai girl and I have a question for anybody who can answer it for me. I divorced my last wife about four months ago, even though we have been seperated longer than that-she has been fighting me for every asset I earned whil she worked a total of six months durring our 2.5 years of marriage-yes she is one of those fat lazy farang wives that gets talked about much here. In Oklahoma you have to wait six months before you can marry again after a divorce is finalized. My thai fiance wants to marry when I leave Iraq (IN 11 MORE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!! :o ) on December 31. Is it okay to do the Bhuddist-Thai wedding thing now and register with registrar and U.S. embassy in March when my divorce will reach the six month mark? Or I am going to hel_l and there is no saving grace for me?

As long as you do not register your marriage (which you can't without the paperwork from Embassy in any case) you are not married in the eyes of the law so having ceremony is not a problem and it really just a traditional ceremony which will likely include giving food to the monks and having some prayers said but the main function with be a party in the evening where you are both seen by everyone and toasts are made.

You do know the drill? Take paperwork to Embassy and fill out paper/have notarized and then go have translated and registered at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (translation service may be able to do for you) and then you are ready to head to a district office with paper/passport and wife to register the marriage. There is no registration required at the Embassy.

Her family understands my situation and I think it will make them feel better about her and I being together. They are even going to give back to us the dowry I pay and I didn't even ask for that. Thank you for relieving my anxiety. :o

You're getting married in Thailand, right? So correct me if I'm wrong, but Oklahoma doesn't have anything to do with it. Whatever restrictions Oklahoma may have shouldn't apply in Thailand for registering your legal marriage. However Thailand may possibly have some restriction on a time you need to wait after your divorce is finalized, I don't know. My guess is that as long as you have a divorce decree in hand, and meet the Thailand rules, that's all you need.

Dont know what the score is in Okla...but I would assume also that if you have what in the UK we refer to as the Divorce Absolute...that its done, sealed and delivered ...no going back then dont see any reason why you cannot get married on the spot in LOS (stamp from Embassy just to say its all true-of course)

Its a civil law statement (internationally recognised) and if the Okla homa do daa band wants to play a different tune then whistle along ...but ignore the words.

Some places/nutty religeous zombies might make the stipulation that after getting divorce in their neck of the woods that you have to wait....what 3 months -3 years -30 years ...dosnt make sense :o

Dont forget that any religeous ceremony is just that.. a bit of show and fun and until you make your mark on the "bit of paper" you are still technically "freelance"....

Incid..just on a small point...if you happen to be a say a catholic and get hitched to another pape then technically without the old boy in the Vats permission (annulment)your civil divorce is never recognised by that church :D and by the same token they are not too happy about you hooking up with a non believer .....honestly whit a carry on....

they are full of it and its all called protectionism..but ...for thir own good

chok dee na krup....

I will have to look into that-the part about Oklahma rules of waiting six months before getting married. Thanks for the info.

I'm Episcopalian-light :D. So maybe it is just a verbal thing and not recognized outside of the state or even the U.S. then. I haven't gone to church in a while but I doubt they would say much if i am legally divorced and legally remarried. I know that the marriage ceremony is just for "face" and for the girl and her family but I want to give it to her because she really wants it and I kinda' do also. Thank you for your information, sir.

There are no restrictions in Thailand regarding timescale for re-marrying. I re-married within a week of decree absolute. You should be able to tell by the divorce certificate if the Embassy will authorise re-marriage. If it says divorce absolute, but you cannot re-marry within the State within 6 months, OK. If it is really a nisi divorce and there is a 6 month cooling off period in Oklahoma law before absolute they will not authorise. I suspect that the law is purely applicable to States where re-marriage is time restricted.

I have now found my law papers on this subject, wow the States is complcated. :o

You are perfectly allowed to re-marry anywhere that doesn't have the 6 months restrictions, such as Thailand. However, although legally accepting the marriage, the State of Oklahoma will class it a felony offence if you live together within the State within the 6 month period. So as long as you don't intend to take your wife back to Oklahoma in the near future you are OK. Good luck with the wedding. :D

:o Holy crap! A felony?! I won't be going back to the states until the summer time so I guess that I will be good there. I just explained that to my fiance and she understands. Thanks for your info, sir.

That is merely a pregnancy clause - believe it can and is easily waived with doctor report.

Thank you lopburi3 for that info as g/f & I plan to marry as soon as my divorce papers arrive and I did not understand this clause. So you just get a doctor to write a report to say your g/f is not pregnant and you will be ok. :o

I think -at least in Holland years ago- this pregnancy clause is only for women. For men it was not a problem to marry within this period of 300 days after divorce.

Only applicable to Thai women who have divorced or husband died. Not applicable to men.
