Man bailed for bringing in prostitutes

A Gold Coast man has been charged with bringing Thai women to Australia to work as sex slaves.

Keith Dobie, 46, granted bail in Southport Magistrates court this morning.

The women had agreed to come in to the country as prostitutes but were allegedly overworked, underpaid and not allowed to leave.

If convicted Mr Dobie could face up to 12 years in prison.

Plent on here will be discusted that this guy could be charged with such a thing.

Couldn't resist it could you?

Lets hope he is punished heavily so as to set an example to others who choose to exploit the more vulnerable elements of Thai soceity. They need protection from all kinds of characters.

like you :D

:o Its good to have you back. My word we haven't crossed swords for a while now have we? Now before it all spirals into a 'Who's one is longer' Leftcross why don't we keep on topic and I will avoid that incredibly feeble attempt to bait me?

Wrong again Lacoste. Slavery and "not allowing one to leave" is illegal in Australia just as it is Thailand and any normal person knows that so what are you going on about now?

Then again, that's what you get in this type of business. They perfectly diserve eachother...why couldn't they choose a normal job. What makes the normal working people? Suckers? Methinks that pimps and prostitutes go together like bread and butter :o

It says they went there knowing what they would be doing, so they went willingly.

It also says allegedly they were over worked, 2 sides to every story and maybe they just took advantage of him to get a visa to get to a better place, then concocted the story, maybe they were not prohibited from leaving. Do you know how hard it is to keep one person from leaving let alone several, just ask my wife !!

He is providing a service, they were making money and dont be so quick to jump on the pimp bashing band wagon....especially when it says willingly !

So many white knights around the world trying to save the helpless, but so many of the helpless can help themselves and do.

Difficult to see how he got bail. In the UK, not allowing someone to leave would be a case of false imprisonment and he would be very unlikely to get any bail. Maybe the aussie courts didn't see it as that serious, or maybe they agree with some of the "puritan" posters here that anyone desperate enough to work in the sex industry deserves what they get!

Fase imprisonement in Australia as well as host of other charges could be laid. Mitigating factors are probably that the women came of their own volition to work as prostitutes, so they are probably also in trouble with the Dept. of Immigraion.

In the UK bail is automatically granted unless it can be shown that there are substantial grounds to believe that the person will fail to surrender, commit further offences, or interfere with witnesses. The seriousness of the offence is irrelevant, except in the sense that the more serious it is, the more likely it is that they will do a runner.

Remember, that at this point the accused is still innocent as a court has yet to find them guilty of any crime, hence the reluctance to deprive them of their liberty.

Assuming he has no history of failing to surrender or committing offences whilst on bail, he would almost certainly be bailed, with conditions such as presenting himself at the local station at certain times, not being allowed to approach witnesses or even surrendering his passport. Any breaches and he would be arrested again and bail would be refused.

If what is reported is true and he is found guilty, I hope they throw the book at him.
