He is the second Brit to be arrested in the south east Asian country this month. Last week, a 74-year-old man was arrested in the resort of Pattaya on suspicion of sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy.

Alan Mawson, originally from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, was held at his home where officers allegedly found hundreds of photos and pornographic videos of young boys.

Earlier this month, Thai Police arrested Canadian teacher Christopher Neil, 32, whose identity was unscrambled from disguised child pornography pictures.

He was accused of having sex with dozens of young boys. A picture of him allegedly taken from child porn images he posted on the internet was sent around the world by Interpol.

BANGKOK, Thailand — Thai police arrested a British man Tuesday and charged him with distributing hundreds of pornographic photographs of children on the Internet, police said.

Paul Cornelius Jones, 39, who has lived in Thailand for seven years, was arrested after police raided his Bangkok apartment and found a computer containing photos of naked boys and girls, said police Col. Apichart Suribunya, head of Thailand's liaison office for Interpol, the international police agency.

Thai police acted on a tip-off from their British counterparts, who told them Jones had been sending photos of naked children to Britain over the Internet, Apichart said.

Police said Jones has been working as a teacher at a Bangkok private school.

Jones, of Cardiff, Wales, has been charged with distributing pornographic photographs of children under age 15, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, Apichart said.

Another officer in the Thai Interpol office, Maj. Phongphon Iamwicharn, said that Jones did not appear in the photos, and that there was evidence he had sold the pictures.

Thai police arrested Christopher Paul Neil of Canada on Oct. 19 on charges of having sex with several young Asian boys after Interpol issued an unprecedented worldwide appeal to identify and apprehend him.

Interpol began its manhunt after finding about 200 pictures on the Internet of Thai, Cambodian and Vietnamese boys being sexually abused by a man whose face was digitally obscured.

After German police computer experts unscrambled the photos so the man's face was recognizable, Interpol circulated them publicly. Tip-offs led them to identify Neil as a suspect.

He has been charged with child sexual abuse, but police are still investigating the case.

Neil has also worked as a teacher at schools in Thailand, South Korea and Vietnam.

Jones and Neil are both in Thai police custody.

Several Southeast Asian countries are popular among pedophiles and sex abusers because of poverty that drives children and their parents to accept money for sexual favors, and sometimes because of lax law enforcement.

Specifically regarding his profession, it is disappointing that the required police check for teachers failed to detect that he is a registered sex offender in the UK.

A 39 year old British man has been arrested in Thailand today following a joint operation by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre and the Royal Thai Police (RTP).

The man was arrested for offences including transmission of obscene material and malicious internet use.

The arrest forms part of an ongoing investigation initiated when in 2003 the man breached his notification requirements under the sex offenders register. Intelligence reports received in August 2007 indicated that the man had fled to Thailand and may be a risk to children.

CEOP’s Overseas Tracker Team picked up the case and a joint operation was launched alongside the Royal Thai Police – one of a number of collaborative programmes currently running in partnership with the RTP to deter and prevent British nationals travelling to South East Asia to abuse children. Other initiatives include delivering training courses, intelligence sharing and targeted operations against other suspects.

Interviews with abusers examined

Child abuse experts at a new specialist police unit will study hundreds of hours of interviews with paedophiles to find out how they think and behave. The information will be used to identify patterns of behaviour and to build criminal profiles.

The centre is based on a similar FBI unit in the US.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will open the unit, part of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop), later.

Ms Smith told BBC News: "This will look at interviews already carried out with paedophiles, so that we can get inside the head of those who want to abuse our children, making us more likely to be able to catch them and get them out of the way of the sort of harm that they're bringing to children."

The centre was an example of how the UK was a "world leader" in tackling child abuse, she added.

As well as examining what individuals say in interviews, the team will also analyse body language and unconscious facial gestures to try and glean insight into the true feelings of the paedophiles.

Ceop head Jim Gamble said the information would help police stay ahead of paedophiles who were constantly changing their methods. "We are going to know what they think before they do so that next time they arrive in a place where a child is vulnerable we will be there waiting for them," he said.

The information would also help police to improve education campaigns for children, he added.

Nine offenders who were on the run but subsequently traced after appearing on Ceop's "most wanted" website are among those whose interviews will be studied.

The unit was welcomed by Adam Hildreth, a member of the Family Online Safety Institute's board, who said understanding why and how paedophiles act was key to keeping ahead of them. "I am convinced that this is the way to catch paedophiles."

Also on Tuesday, Ceop launched its own educational academy. Child protection workers from a number of fields, including police and the charity sector, will be able to study for a University of Central Lancashire-accredited qualification.

Mr Gamble said that would help create a field of experts with up-to-date knowledge of child protection techniques. "What we are doing today is building a resource that will be focused on honing that understanding. "It will look to build factual, contemporary knowledge of how offenders operate and justify their behaviour."

The qualification would become a "foundation towards better protection through better understanding," he added.

When I see an image like this it only reinforces my negative impression of males with tacky tatoos and an already dim perception of Thailand's foreign sourced teachers.

Unfair yes, but you can bet, there are many that share the same views.

If they keep hauling in "teachers" like this, it's going to discourage legitimate teachers from considering a teaching position in Thailand. No sane young male will want to put up with the raised eyebrows, the off colour remarks and the assumptions drawn. It must be he11 to be a decent conscientious teacher in Thailand with this crud hanging overhead.

On the other hand, we need only look at the Oprah PR disaster this week with her school. It was supposed to have the best of the best and was subject to safeguards and oversight and yet it too had the child abuse allegations come out. Sadly, it seems this happens everywhere.

Thailand really need to start scrutinising some of the teachers - The children of Thailand deserve this - it can only be a good thing for those legitimate professional teachers who want to be there plus it will go some way towards resurrecting Thailand image.

They do not have to do everybody all at once - select a sample and see where the pilot project leads

I think this is a very good distinction and one which news agencies and reporters should follow.

legitimate teachers shouldn't be discourage at all; they aren't doing anything wrong. however, bilingual and international schools should and must screen their foreign teachers evenmore it is a must now. parents like me are also to be wary. i would also personally check on my son's teacher this semester (just started) and also will request for their credentials from the principal's office. if us parents will do this every semester the school will have their hints to be cautious everytime they hire teachers, local or foreign.

authorities don't haul teachers but the offenders always happened to be teachers. i guess it is the most easiest profession to be infested by child abusers - just think about it, school has kids.

Briton arrested for alleged child pornography trading

A Briton, who teaches English at an international school in Bangkok, has been arrested for having allegedly traded child porn photos via Internet.

Paul Jones was arrested at his room at Siwara Condominium on Soi Lardprao 94 at 9:30 pm Tuesday.

Pol Col Siripoing Timula, commander of the technology-related crime investigation centre, said Thai police had been alerted by the Interpol to arrest Jones, who had allegedly committed similar crimes in England, Australia and the United States.

Siripong said Jones has been teaching English at an international school in Wang Thong Larn area.

He said the Briton hired Thai boys and girls to pose for nud_e pictures, which he sold via Internet.

Bangkok - Acting on a tip-off from the United Kingdom, Thai police have arrested a British national suspected of posting child pornography on the internet, police sources said Wednesday.

British national Paul Cornelius Jones, 39, who has worked as an English teacher in Thailand for the past six to seven years, was arrested Tuesday night at his Bangkok apartment, said Thai Interpol officer Colonel Apichart Suriboonya.

"This arrest was the outcome of information British Interpol gave us about Jones two weeks ago," said Apichart.

Jones was initially charged with posting child pornography, including images of Thai children, on the internet, but police will investigate whether he also had intercourse with minors while living in the kingdom.

His arrest follows on the heels of the dramatic case of suspected Canadian paedophile Christopher Paul Neil, 32, who was arrested on October 19 in Thailand after an international manhunt prompted by child pornography on the internet.

Neil, a native of a Vancouver suburb, was arrested in a north-eastern Thailand province after fleeing from South Korea, where he had been teaching English when international police agency Interpol made a global plea for his capture.

Neil was initially charged with sexually molesting a 9-year-old Thai boy when he was residing in the country in 2003, when he was also employed as an English teacher.

The Neil and Jones cases are expected to prompt a tightening of immigration regulations on foreign teachers in Thailand.

"We will be asking the Immigration Department for more information on foreign teachers in Thailand," said Apichart in a telephone interview with Deutche Presse-Agentur (DPA).

"It's distressing that both these suspected paedophiles had worked in Thailand as teachers, which allowed them a close proximity with children," he added.

Thai warrant for porn charge man

A teacher accused of distributing child porn over the internet has had an arrest warrant issued against him after he failed to turn up at a Thai court.

Paul Cornelius Jones, 39, originally from Cardiff, was due at court accused of distributing obscene materials.

Somjet Chaichalermpricha, the public prosecutor in Bangkok, confirmed the photos included pictures of naked children and teenagers.

If Mr Jones is found guilty he faces three years in jail or a fine.

"There were pictures of children, teenagers and adults." Mr Somjet said.

"Mr Jones is accused of distributing these images over the internet.

Mr Jones was released on bail in October pending his trial but had been due to appear in court earlier on Wednesday.

He failed to attend and judges issued an arrest warrant for him.

Mr Jones had breached the UK's sex offenders' register, police said

"The court has issued a warrant for Mr Jones' arrest as he has displayed the behaviour of a person wanting to escape justice," a court official said.

Police said they were unsure of his current whereabouts while court officials said they were also unsure whether Jones still had his passport.

Mr Jones was arrested in Bangkok in October after police raided his apartment as part of an investigation which began in Britain in 2003 after he breached the terms of the sex offenders' register, which required him to keep in contact with police.

Thai police said they found obscene materials on his computer and added there was evidence he had sold the pictures.

He was later released on 200,000 baht (£3,245) bail and told to return to the court at a later date.

At the hearing on Friday, bail officers asked for the trial against Mr Jones to be postponed as they couldn't locate him.

However, the presiding judge turned down a postponement and issued a new arrest warrant for Mr Jones because he had broken bail conditions.

Head of Thailand's liaison office with Interpol, Pol Col Apichart Suribunya said the case had now been handed over to local police and his office was no longer involved in the case.

However, local officers in charge of compiling the charges against Mr Jones said they had not been in contact with the suspect for some time and it could be difficult to track him down.

Mr Jones has been living in Thailand for seven years where is it thought he had been working as a teacher in a Bangkok private school.

Paul Jones, whom I personally know was in court today for his hearing.

The truth behind all this is that when police reaided his apartment originally they brought the press with them. The press reported whatever the police told them previous to the raid.

Now upon raiding his apartment thye found nothing at all so they confiscated his computer, also contrary to to official police report he never 'hired' an undercover police officer posing as a transvestite to take photos.

Paul hid from Police at the advice of his lawyer as he did not want to spend the intervening time in a Thai jail waiting for the court case which he was sure was going to be a small affair.

Until last Friday the Thai police still had not let Paul's lawyer know what the actual charges were until Pauls lawyer went into court for the initial hearing. How good is that? How could his lawyer possible construct a defensive case when he has no idea what the charges are going to be until they are brought up in court.

Today he had his court case. He was charged with having sexy photos on his computer - images of naked women. Yes, that is correct under a new law (his is the first case) he was charged with having pictures of naked women on his computer

How many of you could fall foul of this?

(Did you know that all recent pictures are stored by your internet browser in its cache so you download these images automatically so you could be charged with this 'crime' just for looking at a porn site in the last 30 days)

The judge is not sure how to proceed with this as it is the first case and as he said it is a very small offense as he was not distributing them or selling them or making them - he simply downloaded them from the Internet.

Now to all those who were quick to condemn him in the original post I think you should sit back and think twice - this could happen to you.

Again as reported in the Original post Paul is not wanted by the UK authourities, nor the US or Australians.

So we have a long term English teacher who worked his way up to a respectable position (and salary) over the years and the Thai Police with thier buddies in the Thai press have now come and destroyed his public character, his career and his life.

Under recommendation from his lawyer he is now looking at suing the Thai newspapers for defamation, but this still will not clear his name. All those people who saw his photo and the Thai media reporting him as a convicted pedo without any proof and before any court hearing will still think he is involved in this heinious crime.

The reason this was all pushed through so hard by the police? No one knows but it is suspected that a loss of face might be the reason unless they can get him with everything possible as hard as they can because they got the wrong man in the first place.

Thailand - guilty until complete lack of evidence causes a lack of a case.

PS Paul was fined 5,000 Baht for failing to attend the initial hearing - clearly showing that it was not so much of an infringement

This sounds remarkably similar to the case of a friend of mine who is now doing four years in a Chiang Mai jail - I reported the circumstances of that case on TV under the heading, "About Dave". In a nutshell, Dave caused somebody, somewhere to lose face and that person was well connected or had friends in the right places - for those of us that followed the two years worth of trial events it was a real eye opener when it comes to learning about the justice system here.
