My building in Ploenchit is shaking-----not as bad as 26th Dec - but quite vigorous.

I am in Phuket, near the northwest corner --- about 15 min ago (11:10) I felt a quake that was very similar to the one 2 hours before the tsunami hit.

My TV is out --- anybody getting any info?

I see there are 6 of us in this topic --- any comments re quake?

Not good around the same area as the last one! :o Night time as well which is way worse.

That's larger than they were saying the Dec. 26 was right after the fact. Felt larger to me, too.

Magnitude 8.2 - NORTHERN SUMATRA, INDONESIA

A great earthquake occurred at 16:09:37 (UTC) on Monday, March 28, 2005. The magnitude 8.2 event has been located in NORTHERN SUMATRA, INDONESIA. (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.)

Yes, I just saw it on the earthquake.usgs.gov website. Make no mistake: It is recorded with a 8.5 magnitude! That's almost as strong as the Dec 26th tremor!

Have a look here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Qua...quakes_all.html

Are we again the only ones realizing what is happening? Is the government on alert? Are they busy evacuating? Or are they again just doing nothing?

Edited by Dario

It's only been a 20 minutes since it happened...they're probably deciding whether to evacuate or not (they've got a couple hours before a tsunami would hit).

Reminds me of the beginning of "The Day After" when the bueys were reporting impossible values ... brrr...

BTW, it's on CNN now.

Wow you guys are fast! I also experienced almost identical sensations to the December quake at our condo in BKK, Bangkoknoi. I am not sure if it was shorter though, or whether being in the evening meant I was less aware of when it began (on our floor, it is not so much shaking as strange noises from the structure). The December one seemed to continue steadily for at least 45 seconds, but this one I only noticed for 20-30 seconds at most.

On CNN now.

CNN is already reporting as "BREAKING NEWS." Just tune in into CNN...

Thai TV news is saying that it's now upgraded to 8.5 on the scale, which is a lot more than 8.2 since the scale is exponential. (About 2 gigatons for 8.2 and 5 gigatons for 8.5, if you want to use the TNT analogy)

CNN: Possibility of another Tsunami

Thai TV has already told people to get away and go to higher ground in the six southern provinces. Do not know what local action is being taken.

You heard it first on Thai Visa!

Its night there, this could be bad if one hits

8.2 earthquake registered off Sumatra

Magnitude is nearly as large as tsunami quakeBREAKING NEWS

MSNBC staff and news service reports

Updated: 12:02 p.m. ET March 28, 2005A large earthquake was registered Monday off Indonesia's Sumatra Island, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, describing it as a "great earthquake" with a magnitude of 8.2 on the Richter scale.

The USGS advised officials in the area to move people inland, and Thai officials were among the first to issue a tsunami warning for the Andaman Sea.

No reports of injury or damage had been received from the region. The Dec. 26 quake that launched the massive tsunami was a 9.0, the USGS said.

Monday's quake epicenter was just off the northern Sumatra coast and between two smaller islands, and located at 18.6 miles underground. It occured at around 11 p.m. local time.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.

Didn't feel anything in Chalong (Phuket), but - according to Thai TV - in Patong they're running for the hills... :o

RDN - anyone give FTH or Wolfie a ring - make sure they know.

They say on CNN that it's 8.2 and that a tsunami could be generated. :o

It's better to be safe than sorry so everyone should seek higher ground just in case.

US Geol Survey also says that tsunamis are possible.

Snowleopard.

I felt something, i couldnt compair with the last one as i wasnt awake when it happened...

Its panic in Phuket... Sirens, roads are chaos.

Will keep you updated
