I am a 44 year old English guy and seek personal advice on getting a facelift in Thailand.

My main concern is safety and getting a good job done, followed a long way behind by price.

Is it better (safer and better guaranteed results) to have it done in UK or Thailand?

Can anyone (preferably from personal experience) recommend the best Hospital and particularly the actual Surgeon to do the facelift in Thailand?

What is approximate price?

Of course I would rather pay whatever price, than have it go wrong.

Any other information would be most helpfull, such as a guide to procedures, consultation process and how to takle this whole issue before I go under the knife.

Thanks

I used Professor Montri at Siriraj Hospital and as I know a few influential folks, was put at the front of his massive long waiting list.

6,000 Baht for a nose job after a road accident.

Thanks DJpat,

I will enquire there.

Does anyone else have experience of a facelift and advice/recommendations/warnings etc as per my post, please?

If I were you I'd buy some books on the subject first. You can't rely on the Internet for solid, unbiased medical information. Books are at least reviewed by a specialist in the field before publication. Try to get a book that isn't written by someone trying to drum up business for himself or promote a new technique. The books will help you understand the whole procedure, guide you in what questions to ask, and outline the risks.

When I had surgery on my eyes, the doctor didn't tell me about any of the things (mostly relatively minor) that can go wrong. Also, when I asked the requisite question, "How many of these operations have you done before?" she answered, "Oh, lots!" Not exactly specific. So you need to understand the procedure and have all your questions ready before you see the doc.

From things I've read, there are different types of facelifts and some are fairly complex, so you aren't likely to get a ballpark figure for the costs on the Internet. Try and find the Daily Telegraph article (a few weeks ago) about Toya Wilcox's facelift. That was an eye-opener.

Also, check on the recovery procedure. I doubt you can jet into Bangkok, have the facelift, hit the bars for a few nights and fly back home again! You will have to avoid aspirin and alcohol before and after. I had to be extremely careful about sudden movement and about how I slept (no rolling around or sleeping on stomach or side) for 3-4 days. With facelifts, nerves under the skin are severed and there might be numbness for a period. There would probably be more than one follow-up visit.

My laser surgery cost $750 at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok. A facelift would be more.

You can look at the hospital websites and check out prices online. They may go into details about recovery times etc.

There are companies running trips where you come to Thailand, go into hospital the next day, stay overnight, then spend about 10 days or so in a nice hotel recuperating. This is usually enough from what I can understand.

BNH and Samitivej are also worth considering.

Haven't read it yet, but Toyah Wilcox wrote a book about it:

"Diary of a Facelift" Toyah Willcox

ISBN 1-84317-135-X Hardback - 2005

Michael O'Mara Books

There are two extracts here:

The operation itself is not the hard part.

It's the following ten days to three weeks of 'recovery'...Swelling, pain, antibiotics, no appettite, and general discomfort.

THATS the downside.

I don't know what your face is like, but if there is not severe skin drooping then some of the new non-surgical alternatives (thermage, aptos threads) might do the trick, at least for 5-10 more years by which time who knows what else will be around. Thermage stimulates collagen production to firm up the face. Aptos threads are inserted to gently pull up sagging areas.

For thermage, aptos threads etc it is outpatient and Dr. Nantapat Supapannachart is best, she has her own group of clinics called Apex and is also on staff at Bumrungrad.

If actual cutting is required, then of course its inpatient.. What I suggest is that you email both Bumrungrad and Samitivej Hospitals with a scanned photo of your face and ask what their plastic surgeons think would be the best options and the price. You may want to price shop a bit (these 2 hospitals are very good, but at the top of the price scale for Thailand) but at least you'll know specifically what procedures to price-shop for.

Did a search for Prof Montri on their website but he is not listed there?

I am in Bangkok presently recouperating at the Marriott for upper/lower eye surgery. I went to Bumrungrad Hospital and Dr. Sorawuth Chu-Ongsakul performed the surgery. If there are typos please excuse as I cannot see clearly yet (day #3 morning). The surgery went well although it was under local anestesia (I would not do that again) I was very scared as it took an average of 5 injections on the upper and lower eye lids to numb. I asked for something to calm me and I believe that the gave me injections of valium. I brought my sister along with me to care for me during my recovery which is expected to last about one week. I had surgery Monday night at 8pm my follow up is on Sunday afternoon. So far everything seems to be going as expected. If I can help you answer any questions pleasr pm me and I will be happy to answer what I can. Good luck to you,

I did a search for the Dr. and did locate him. He is listed as Pediatric, so possibly he was in the ER that night. The person who used him could enlighten you on his speciality if he was slected for plastic surgery. I could not find him associated with any form of cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Montri the plastic surgeon is not on staff at these hospitals, he is at Samitivej Hospital, a government hospital not private. However he might have private practice someplace...perhaps the person who recommended him could advise? In meantime, just email international patient services at Bumrungrad and Samitivej with your questions and scanned photo of your face and ask whay procedures they recommend. Specifically ask whether non-surgical procedures such as thermage and aptos threads would give much improvement...always best to explore the less drastic options first.

I am seeing Dr. Nantapat day after tomorrow, if you want you can PM me a photo and I'll show it to her and ask her opinion re surgery vs less invasive approaches.

oops, sorry, typo-- I meant to say Dr. Montri is at SIRIRAJ, which is a giovernment hospital, not Samitivej which is an (excellent) private hospital

Don't have a photo scanned at present so will try to sort that out.

It is for my laughter lines that I mainly want correction. The rest could look better, but willing to just get eye wrinkles done for now.

Do you have any idea of the choices available? I will be in Thailand in a couple of months and would like to arrange to start the process off and get a consultation

if it's just lines, you don't need a face lift...Botox and/or fillers will do it, both are simple out-patient injections. Widely availble all over Bangkok & for that matter most countries. However the results depend a lot on the experience of the person who injects it...there''s an art in knowing exactly where and how much. Botox injections need to be repeated every 3-6 months. Some of the fillers are longer lasting.

Face lift is for when there is a significant amount of sagging skin. Mild sagging will often respond to theramge, likewise a nonivasive outpatient procedure.

All of these treatments available at Apex, best to just make an appointment (be sure to make it with the doctor, for consultation) then get her advice on options and pros and cons. Any of the things I mentioned can be done straight away once you've talked with her,

Sheryl, have you been to Apex. I am lloking for a good place to go for botx when in Thailand. I will be in Pattaya and there is a lady there that specializes in Botox etc...she is on the website , that is how I found her. I am considering a mid-face lift sometime in the near future as I am 52 and think this is the right time as my skin still has good elasticity...the older you get the worse it is for facial procedures. Do you know of what Dr. in BKK would be best for this procedure.

I go to Apex regularly for Botox and I think Dr. Nantapat (Apex doc) is a genius when it comes to knowing exactly where to inject & how much. She can also advise on other treatments that would benefit a specific person. I have found her advice frank and accurate. Thanks to her I know look 10 years younger than before I started (if I could just shed 10 lbs that muight be 15 yrs!).

Many places do it, most are probably OK but I doubt any can surpass her. Unlike other cosmetic procedures there's not that much difference in pricing for Botox because the bulk of thecost is the cost of the drug itself. Don't trust anyplace that is markedly cheaper as they are likely using off-label or diluted brands. Which can be ineffective and even dangerous.

Botox wears off, which while on the whole a disadvantage does help offset the risks if you go to someone not so skilled. But why take chances when it's a luxury treatment to begin with?

agreed....thanks for the info.....I just had my 1st botox shots here in the US 3 days ago. Still waiting to see the full results. I think for any of us that want to look a little younger, botox is the answer. No pain, no recovery and not too expensive.

Hi There, really glad to hear from someone with the experience! I am aiming for an upper-eye job (just removing the folds left after weight-loss) and would also like a tummy tuck.

Please could you let me know how you feel about your eyes now - was it worth the effort and would you reccomend the surgeon? many many thanks

Just wanted to see if anyone has any updates on this thread.

I had inquired on another thread about facial cosmetic procedures, ie. aptos threads vs min face lift vs ???

I sent off an email yesterday to the dermatologist with the APEX clinics, haven't heard back yet.

I will be in BKK in mid September for just a week and hope to see a dermatologist and a plastic surgeon to get some input. I might try the plastic surgeon in Chonburi, I haven't yet gotten a really good feel for who would be the best for me.

Thanks everyone!

I have heard mixed reports about the aptos threads from people and since thermage (the "no scalpel mini-face lift") came out that seems to be what all the doctors recommend instead for overall tightening and small sags. Big sags still need the knife.

Live in US and just got home after mid-face and neck lift at Bumrungrad. Had an extremely positive experience and am thrilled with the results so far after only 2 weeks. Very little, if any, pain and am back at work full time. Bruising is minimal, just around the ears and under the chin. Had a bit of a black eye but that's now gone.

Congragulations Marcia! Can I ask the name of your surgeon for future reference?

I went to Dr. Amorn Poomee. You can read his credentials on the Bumrungrad website. His wife is his assistant and their English is very good.

Marcia, what was the cost of the surgery and how long did it take? How many nights did you have to stay and how much were the cost for extra nights or did you stay somewhere else close by?I'm considering a mid-face and neck lift ,the same as you.I read Dr. Armone's credentials but the website said the 1222,000 baht quoted may not apply to him doing the surgery.

That's correct. Dr. Amorn charged me 175,00 baht, but I knew he was more going in. The EKG and blood tests cost an additional $1845 baht. He costs more but I feel he is worth the extra cost, although I'm sure the other doctors are extremely competent as well. I stayed in the hospital 2-1/2 days. I chose not to stay on-site but near by at a hotel as I was with a friend and we wanted to tour, etc. If I was going by myself, I'd stay at the hospital facility right next to the hospital. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the info Marcia.I assume the blood tests and the EKG are required with all the Dr.s, yes? Sorry but I could't tell if the cost was 1845 baht or $1845.Just wondering how many days after the inital consultation did you have the surgery. Thanks
