If people truely don't want him - they will vote for anything, but.... however I guess thats too hard a concept for the minority.

The opposition would do worse than last year. Thailand is more than Bangkok where a bunch of protesters try to beat the crap out of commentators when they estimate their figures lower than they had in mind. Who are they with 125 seats? just lealous guys? 100,000??? come on, there were fewer than half.. not that impressive boys! Still I wonder would the old general prefer a job again? Of course again without elections. SORE LOSERS! I do not like Thaksin but he is at least democratically elected! Somnething else than the old general has in mind, when he tries to bully the SEC, Screwd Banchak Petroleum when he figured out Thai Investment would be better than foreign, and when he played a very special role in the Thamassat shootings! I like a monk like that! Back to the monestry build on stolen land Chamlong!

Actually I think its a smart move. It will allow the MP's that want out of TRT to bail and still be in the election. All they have to do is jump ship now and delay the election for 30 days. You may start hearing about MP's jumping ship soon.

7:20 pm: Thaksin gives interview to reporters after a meeting with small parties that the Thai Rak Thai will go on "carrying out our duty". He says although the Chat Thai, Democrat and Mahachon would boycott the election, there are 10 other small parties, which will participate in the election.

I think he has them check-mate with that one... if they boycott they'll lose all their seats

Why do you think the ever cunning, all seeing, omnipotent Dr Taxinstein called for an early election? Purely to keep all his rats on his own ship. They will have no option but to sink or swim with him, or take an honorable way out, and resign, and then you might run out of candidates

They are quite right to boycott the thing. They have asked TRT to participate in consitutional reforms, they have refused. The current situation overwhelmingly favours TRT. An election in 30, days with the 90 day rule in place, virtually complete control of the media and with enough resources to ensure that the rural voters, make the "right choice." The problem here is Toxic, and his refusal to resign, here we have guy who is unsuitable as a PM, he would be better of as a Kindergarden teacher. At least there you can tell the kids that you know best and there is no need for them to think. Then again, if I had children I probably wouldn't want him to teach my them. No the guy, has to go! At the moment he is doing a Mugabe, thank God for the King!

Forgive my ignorance, but I haven't been able to see what Thaksin is proposing in the event of winning the election. Am I to assume that his sole intention is to remain in power, rather than to seek the electorate's views on new policies?

Incidentally, for all the agitation caused, I notice that the exchange rate and stock markets don't seem too concerned. Am I missing something (and that is a genuine question)?

I don't know is an election with just one party possible "vote for TRT or TRT", even if only he alone vote for himself he get 100 %?

My wife thinks that the king will make a gouverment without election and election is somewhen later.

Even if the opposition were to relinquish all of their seats in parliament through a boycott in the upcoming election, how would they actually be any worse off than they are right now?

Knowing there are discontented factions within TRT that might jump ship if they thought they could do so without shutting themselves out of office until the following election (they couldn't stand in an upcoming election because of the 90-day rule), Mr. Big has zero incentive to discuss any constitutional reform of the election process. He's holding all of the political marbles at the moment due to the overwhelming number of TRT MPs. This "stunt" may be the opposition's only way of forcing a debate on constitutional reform, assuming they can stay the course with a boycott.

Surely if all the opposition parties formed a coalition - albeit an unholy alliance - this might shake things up a little

When Taksin proposed talks on constitutional reform with conditions kept vague, and ultimately according to TRT of course, The Opposition realised he was trying to divert attention from the burning,current issue, his own misdeeds.

It's interesting that Chart Thai have joined the boycott, never accused of being ethical in the past, Banharn has complained of feeling hungry when in the Opposition, he must sense the way the wind is blowing.

Amusing to see Sanoh Tiang Tong on stage at Sanam Luang just now with the PAD, apologising for supporting Taksin in the past. Earlier, Uthai,( I forget his surname), former TRT member and House Speaker came out to support the Opposition's boycott.

Have to admit i cannot actually see what the major problem with Thaksin, if thhe others boycott the election they lose. If they take part they will probabley lose also. I think they are now scared as they thought Thaksin would just resign and now they have called disolved the house they know that the ordinary Thai's who now have a 30 baht health service and a pension will vote them out

The PM has not changed much. He is still getting rid of the people who criticize him, he is just making it look like it serves Thailand. I suspect there is more decent in his own ranks that is generally known thus this bold move. However this bold action of dissolving the government suggests desperation on his part. I have been noting the actions he is taking are growing at somewhat of a alarming nature. You can almost predict tanks in the street not to far in the future.

Actually, I think he does care on some level. If you feel that calling the snap election was a way for Mr. Big to whitewash himself (although I'm sure he wouldn't couch it in those exact terms!), then it's in his best interest for the election to appear to be a legitimate exercise. Winning 500 seats in parliament, even if it's brought about by an opposition boycott of the election, won't do much to achieve this objective.

But if they join the elections they'd could end up with a lot more seats than they have now, considering TRT's declining popularity, do they want to hand those seats to the 10 smaller parties who will be glad to take them?

Why would he not be elected democratically? as I recall votings a duty in Thailand. If your going to show up at the polls might as well vote. The sunni minority tried a boycott in the first Iraqi election, changed their tune the next election.

Big cities are generally democratic, as well as union. trade association etc but rural areas where the majority of people live are more conservative, they are people who have to work for life on its most basic level.

The majority of posters on this board come from socialist europe, they feel more comfortable with a nanny goverment, like the cradle to grave comfort of big brother watching over them, wiping their asses and giving them comfort. Hence the proliferation of prodemo posts, and anti Taksin messages found on this board. well I'm never voting in a Thai election and very ###### few of you will. I constantly read negativity against the PM but very few comments about whats occurred thats been good. I go with my Thai wife on this one, she points out all the good Taksins done vs what occurred before he took office. She has no reason to be happy with the man, didn't like him before he took office, and as she worked for a company that he owned and lost her job when he closed it, she certainly didn't vote for the man. But she recognizes what many things that've improved. 30 baht health visits, wipe out of world bank debt in such a short period of time, it surprised all, building projects all around the country etc..

I think alot people dislike the intrusion into their enjoyments, bars closing earlier, crackdown on drugs, an increase in what it takes to stay in Thailand monetarily etc None of which will affect me, I'm happily married, drink rarely , bars aren't my cup of tea anymore, and if I want live music I'll buy an electronic piano as I can't play my guitars anymore.

But I guess my point is most here wish to import their values from home and place them in Thailand. Same as Muslims wish to do in Europe(world) and many are starting to resent that. I say let the Thais decide, many on board have a tendency toward elitism, as if their smarter, better than the Thais. I'm not smarter or better than anyone, I recognize that fact, my values aren't necessarily thai values, although many coincide, but I'll not try to force them on anyone
