PM Thaksin Shinawatra resigns

BANGKOK: -- Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced on Tuesday that he will not take premiership in the next government. He said his decision is aimed at restoring unity in the country.

He apologised to 16 million people who voted for him in the April 12 election.

A main reason of his decision is that the country is celebrating HM the King's 60th anniversary on the throne, Thaksin said.

However he will remain in the position as caretaker prime minister until the Parliament select the new prime minister.

THAKSIN RESIGNS

BANGKOK: -- Bowing to weeks of mass protests against his rule and the disappointing results for his party at Sunday's snap election, Thailand's embattled caretaker prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced his resignation on Tuesday.

"I ask not to take on the premiership after a new parliament opens in 30 days," said Thaksin in a televised speech.

His resignation came shortly after an audience with His Majesty the King at Hua Hin.

Technically, Mr Thaksin will remain as caretaker premier until parliament meets and approves a new cabinet. Mr Thaksin will not be prime minister in that government.

He said he would remain as head of the Thai Rak Thai party he founded and led to an unprecedented election victories.

Earlier story:

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will make an announcement on TV pool tonight at 8.30 p.m. after having an audience with HM the King this afternoon, a government source said on Tuesday.

Thaksin went to Klaikangwon Palace at Hua Hin, Prachuab Khiri Khan province in the afternoon and came back to Bangkok in the evening.

Earlier premier's Secretary General Prommin Lertsuridej said that the premier's audience was a routine visit every six weeks but after leaving the palace an urgent arrangement had been made for the premier to appear on TV pool at 8.30 p.m.

The House is in deadlock due to unfilled seats, and it won't have any legitimacy until Opposition joins in.

Thaksin has a lot of caretaking to do.

Bugger, and it all came after visit to Hua Hin. Time to eat hats :o

Just kidding.

Thanks everyone for maintaining all these threads very civil. In fact I think that's the first political discussion that didn't go down the drain.

Thaksin will not accept the role of premier in the next government that is formed. So, in effect, he is resigning from the premiership. This is a 180 degree turn about from his statements on television yesterday.

He said it was to restore unity and was quite different to his suggestion yesterday that a Reconciliation Commission be formed to bring about a compromise.

His Majesty obviously told him that it was in the interests of the country, particularly on the ocassion of his sixtieth cyle that there should be national unity and no division in the country. There had to be harmony in the interests of national security.

A good move. It sounds like His Majesty has at long last intervened. :o

PROBLEM: The PAD want him to leave politics completely - not sure if they'll accept this offer - even though it's a MAJOR CLIMB DOWN!

sounds like a bad trick.

make an election in the areas the TRT did not get the 20 %. Step back as PM, and continue like before with 100 % in parlament.

That would be worse than before.

Wonderful. So he will be the TRT party leader controlling a flunky PM with no political opposition for the next 15 months. Then there's a slim chance that some decent constitutional ammendments can be made and reduce the chances of TRT governing for the next umpteen years.

TRT get 100 % in parlament, one of his mate make the premier and he makes a different job or just controll from the back.....

Wonderful. So he will be the TRT party leader controlling a flunky PM with no political opposition for the next 4 years. I doubt very much will change for the better.

There was live coverage on CNN, but I haven't seen anything on BBC. He's just got in headlines now.

CNN had analysts discussing the situation and simultaneiously exposing their ignorance.

Taksin will not be the premier anymore, but as I see it, TRT will rule the country, one of them will become prime minister and HE (Thaksin) will appoint him. All the members of TRT are his puppets on a string. He will continue to rule the country and set new standards from the comfortable back seat.

It is as simple as one, two, three. All orchestrated by their party leader.

When will that be, they cant form a government. :o

The law is quite clear. He will be around for a little while longer.

and he will have 100 % in the parlament, so no controll!

Absolut dictator mission accomplished.

Korn of Democrats is talking live on BBC and saying that what Thaksin proposes does not make sense because there's no Parliament to replace him.

He also said that he can come back if independent investigation clears him of all charges - reasonable man, that Korn.

Don't think HRH intervened, prob more like PM notifying the King of his resignation before the media.

Got to disagree there. Don't forget Thaksin was quite adamant last night that he would continue as PM in the next government. The call to Hua Hin came a few hours later.

This is the BIG ONE. Thaksin MUST accept and respect His Majesty's wishes. There can be no shenanigans this time round - although we're all so suspicious of Thaksin they we naturally think the worse.

I also suspect that Thaksin himself might be quietly relieved - maybe it took His Majesty to drum home to Thaksin what everybody else already knew! GO!

Well there will have to be another election and hopfully the oppostion will get their act together. So that we don't have a TRT dominated parliament. One can only hope that TRT now goes into meltdown, thus making it hard for Tox to come back ever again!

Agree, if Thaksin had decided to resign it would be standard protocol for him to inform the King first. Gen Prem warned people only recently not to involve HRH in a partisan way as he is above politics.

Also worth taking notice of is the fact that if after there has been a full enquiry in to the allegations made against him and he is cleared of any wrong doing. HE WILL BE BACK.

And I'd wager that PM will be cleared and he will be back. :o
