  1. I wouldn't rely too much on GPS if it's a Garmin. Of course it helps a lot but it'll lead you on some daft routes.

If you want sightseeing you might want to try the mountain route - up the 107 through Fang then across to Mai Ai, Mae Chan and you'll come out about 20km south of Mae Sai on AH1.

From CM it's roughly the same distance but your average speed may be slightly lower on account of the winding mountain passes, depending how you drive.

I ride like the wind. My personal record is CM to CR, bus station to bustarion in 1 hour 50 minutes. That was is the evening and with no passengers though.

I have done the trip u suggest before and u r right it is a very lovely trip. It might be the way to go up there.

    Thanks smile.png

P.S I'd still like to know where the short cut is if anybody knows.

At what speed did you achieve take off?

Well the trip, according to Google maps is less then 200k, so that makes a average speed of around 100 km/h.

But I got to admit that a lot of the trip was driven a bit faster than the speed limit. But if u have ever done the trip at night u would know its like driving through ghost town after ghost town on a 2 lane highway.

  3. I am driving to Mae Sai tomorrow for a visa runa a bit of sightseeing with a friend.

I used to take the 600B vans as in general I prefer relaxing rather than driving. Some of the van drivers knows a kind of short cut around Chiang Rai. They take a left turn somewhere between the maintains and Chiang Rai and come out on the main road to Mae Sai north of Chiang Rai near a gasstation. This cuts a lot of time of the journey as it is shorter and u avoid the traffic and traffic lights in CR.

I have tried to find this route on Google maps but without success. Does anyone know where to take the left turn? That's all I need as I'm sure my GPS will take care of the rest.

    Best regards

  4. Well AndersSN I'm sure that we would like to know what type of business are you running. I know that you a re expressing it from your business, but I really do want to know where and what are you doing?

Everybody else is having a really tough year, and here you are saying it's the greatest! Come on, spill, what's your business. Then maybe you're claim will be more credible.

First. I didn't say this year is the greatest. I Said that this is the best high season for MY business.

Second. I am not a sponsor so I am not allowed to name my business, but if you had spend time in the CM forum over the last couple of years you would properbly know what it is (many here do) and if you really want to know you could have a look at my profile and find out what my tourist related business is :)

And btw, I don't care if you think my "claim" is credible or not. I know some people find pleasure in lying in forums where they can be anonymous, I'm am not one.

  5. the night bizzaro is a disgrace and should be stoped, over priced over done over due

I don't think ex pats bother with the night bazaar, unless they have guests that want to be shown around.

All tourist places around the world are overpriced and there will always be tourist's willing to buy things, that are still cheaper or unobtainable where they come from.

The same could be said for Loi Kroh : D

  6. I'm glad [or not so glad as the case may be] to see that many other of the longer stay people seem to agree that the season has been slower with fewer tourists than usual..

The hospitality business to which I am closest, indicates a 25 to 30 % shortfall from last year... that comes to me both as in revenue and in numbers of guest/customers.... This is calendar year 2007 vs 2006 year to date.

I would guesstimate that a very small fraction of this is due to the new immig regs....... My opinion is that it is a accummulation of things.

Some small amount due to the change in governments........ a larger portion due to the perceived danger of coming to Northeren Thailand and trying to breathe..... some small portion to the South Thailand Problems......and a very large part to the media coverage that today can and is flashed around the world almost instantly.....

Most of the seasoned travelers have enough common sense to check things out locally before venturing off, and of course all the travelers from last year , would not be coming back to Thailand again this year anyhow...... I think it is the new, first timers to

Thailand who are summing up all the difficulties and just plain deciding that "maybe Thailand, with all the difficulties I have read about, best be put off til another year, and besides my money will go further in........ wherever...

    But this too shall Pass.......

    Gonzo

Over the years there have been clampdowns on the hospitality businesses and the adult entertainment establishments in Chiang Mai.

Lets face some facts, Chiang Mai has become boring. Once seen the elephants, the temples and a couple of waterfalls, what else is left? And I won’t even bother going into details regarding the <deleted> pit Loi Krok road, Chiang Mai`s answer to the nightlife or Hamburg or Amsterdam, what a dump.

I have said this many times in the past, that the numbers of tourists will continue to dwindle year by year unless Chiang Mai is given some vibrant new lease of life.

And adding to all the crap, the recent pollution and burning problem was absolutely diabolical. Enough to make even the most enthusiastic of the regular tourists turn away and go elsewhere.

But please don`t take my word for it, only need to ask the people that run businesses in Chiang Mai for their opinions. It`s only going to get worse, trust me on this one.

I'm a business owner and has been for 4 high seasons now.

This one was the best so far and I'm not even running it myself anymore.

So I'm sorry, but I don recognize the picture u paint at all. smile.png

    Well, that’s great news

So everything is Hunky-dory and the tourists are flooding in, spending money like there is no tomorrow.

What you are saying is; that everything is on the up and up.

Are you confident enough to let us know what sort of business you’re in, your part in it and how this pertains to the tourist industry? For credibility of statement reasons.

I am Mr Cynical, so convince me.

You are putting words in my mouth. Please stop that, there are way too many in there already just bursting to come out :)

I never made any claims to the general condition of this high season, only you seem to have the omnipotence to make such claims.

I made an observation to a question based on my own narrow view of the CM tourist industry.

If you choose to disbelieve me because it doesn't fit your view of current affairs, then that is your prerogative.

  8. Lots of posts about abortion, prostitution etc. I thought the OP was asking for a cure for a hangover rolleyes.gif . The remedy for this would be a couple of beers in the morning. Pills don't help. smile.png

I have found the best cure ever!!!!

But u have to prepare from the day before.

The good thing is tit simple.

Don't drink at all and I guarantee u won't have a hangover the next day.

Warning: not drinking could lead to serious psychological issues like low selfs stem and loneliness

  9. nice but WAS it a thai who lost and a thai who found?

    Only the op knows. smile.png

Well unless this lady is a foreigner that works in a shop that sells mobile phones, something I have never seen, I guess it is a safe assumption to make.

Curious how this thread as so many "new" posters

  10. There is also a shop in Airport Plaza. Four shops left of Tom Laycut hairdresser. Blue sign on the shop and it's on a corner.

Changed the screen on my iPhone and iPad no problem,

  11. They would sometimes drown from the rain water because they aren't bright enough to not look with their mouths open.

Had a girl friend like tha once.

    Btw wird article.

I don't know if cock fighting is legal or not. But I did see a cop shoe on TV where the cops stormed a cock fight (I guss thats what you call cock blocking), these cocks did have spurs though. The show was all in Thai so I can't say why it was stormed, but they filled two trucks with spectators and drove of with them.

  12. Well done for throwing the thread. May I suggest avoiding attempts at wit unless you're all-over the given tongue, or, better still, just use smilies and avoid text altogether. whistling.gif

Throwing the thread? I have offered valid information that was found usefull, what have you contributed with? I must really have gotten under your skin and you suffer from a serious inferiority complex for you to lash out like that. Sorry.

    On a serious note.

The first European university was founded in 1088 in Bolgna Italy, in what was then the Papel States.

If you look at how a science like chemistry was pursued then, we would laugh at how primitive and unscientific it was. Keep in mind that this was thought as the hight of scientific pursuit then.

If you looked at a lecturing hall and the way teaching was conducted, you would recognize it instantly from your own uni days as being virtually identical to how we teach now.

The point is, that education haven't changed in more than 900 years because we don't actually know how the brain works and how stimulate it properbly. The result is that good learning occurs more from a good inviroment and the people in it rather than curriculum and method. Also when you take into account that studies (like IQ test of twins separated at birth growing up in different environments) have shown that your intellectual potential is genetically decided, all this worrying about where to send our children is pointless.

The positive thing is that the fact that you do worry is a sign of intelligence, that you have transferred to your child, and that you care will most likely create a stimulating environment for you child, helping it fulfill it's potential.

  13. So,let's make the calculation. If you had 10 bays you would need at least 3 workers per bay, don't you think so?That's 30 workers at 300 baht a day.

Hey.that's also almost 10.000$ a month without any rent, elctricity, detergents and other materials taken into account yet.

You still sure it is a viable business?

Oh, bugger. Me and my big mouth... I should learn to stop thinking out loud I didn't really want to get into a debate about it...

Well ok... First off, I didn't say I was sure. I said "needs a lot deeper analysis"...

But since you mention it... 30 employees for 100 cars a day? That's 3.3 cars per day per employee - at 45 minutes a car they're "working" 150 minutes a day. I'm not into slave labour but 150 minutes seems a tad lenient...

No, I used a (very quick and inaccurate) mental calculation which is usually a good starting point (if you intend to take it further, which frankly I didn't).

Anyways... 30% labour, 30% overheads, 30% profit. In this case 90,000/month labour (enough for 10), 90,000/month overheads (hmmm... maybe), 90,000/month profit. Still leaves 30,000/month leeway to adjust staff & overheads if necessary.

10 staff means they're doing 10 cars a day each. 450 minutes a day, 7.5 hours work. Almost seems doable.

Overheads 90k - absolutely no idea.

To continue from there you'd need to get accurate figures for overheads, first off. Then put more than 5 minutes thought into whether it could be done with 10 staff. And finally work out your startup costs (machinery etc) and see if you have an acceptable timescale for ROI...

One Thai worker which does 1 car every 45 minutes. That would deserve a place in the guiness book of records.

Actutually work like this would only cost about 150-200 bath a day, so labour wouldn't be that expencive.

Get some of those Myanmar kids that was mentioned and you might get away with less than a hundred.

I get my car done while I play golf at star dome, I'm so awaful that 9 holes takes me hours so I don't have to vorry about the time, hehe. 180 inside out, works for me!

  14. Nakorn Payap would be ideal being so close, but don't think it's such a big; your kid is 3 after all!

British education is the ass end of European education, you could call it French education and it would be better.

Christ, all the prejudice is coming out today; I think you'd fit in nicely among the dolts in the Taliban thread. Please go there.

    Don't blasphemer please.

I was here first and you were in the Taliban thread first so why don't you stay there?

Anyway, the two following post saw the funny side and it's not my fault can't add smilies on my iPad.

I'm sorry if I hit the mark and you fell of your high horse.

  15. On Wednesday 18th January LIST (Lanna International School Thailand) will open its doors for an "Open Day". If you are considering LIST as an option then come along and take a look at what goes on during a regular school day. You will also have the chance to meet with staff to discuss the Cambridge International Education programmes that are followed throughout the school.

All are welcome, whether looking for Kindergarten age children or children of High School age. See the attached flyer for details (and print a copy and bring it with you for free admission testing during January).

You almost had me thinking about changing schools until I read: "A quality British education in Chiang Mai"

British education is the ass end of European education, you could call it French education and it would be better.

  16. I can second Little Stars.

My Daughter is only 2 and a bit but counts to ten in 3 languages and knows the Thai alphabet when she sees the letters.

Very nice and attentive staff, good class sizes.

    +1

May I ask what the cost of Little Stars is and where it is located?

I visited Sarasas School today as I am looking for somewhere to send my 2 1/2 y.o. child. It seemed like a nice place. Unfortunately it was out of my budget.

Here is their website including the address, but it's near Nimanhaemin http://www.littlestars-preschool.com/contact%20us.html

I forget the exact prize but I pay 5-6.000 a month.

  17. I got stuck buying this monstrosity. I can't decide if it is blue or green. I hope it is

    auspicious.

Nothing that you cant fix with the sticker "this is not a Honda Jazz". biggrin.png

Nothing wrong with a bit of Jazz in your life.

  18. I see a Honda City but no Yaris.

Those two types are the ones I mostly see involved in accidents in CM.

I guess it's because they are both cheep cars. The Yaris is often a first time car and can be "pimped" to look like a racer. The City (or Honda Shity) looks like the Civic but is cheaper than a Jazz and is truly a horrible car to drive. I guess the people that buy them are more vorried about appearance than road worthiness.

  19. I haven't found any definitive evidence, but as far as I know Volvo never 'made' cars in Thailand (or anywhere outside of Sweden and Belgium). What they did in Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa and possibly elsewhere was assemble cars from CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits. This means that all the components came from Volvo's normal supply chain. I think that you would be hard put to find any quality difference between Volvos assembled in different locations.

    / Priceless

Agreed. Speaking of Volvo, I just fell in love. Saw the new S60 on the road in Chiang Mai in the Chotana area. Wow. And it's relatively affordable too at 1.9 MB. http://www.headlight...iland&Itemid=55

On the bat-crazy Zafira woman, I wouldn't recommend trying to take pictures, especially not if that means having to keep up with the same break-neck driving. Better to follow at some distance and then slip a note with the URL to this topic under the windscreen wiper. Or just express concern in person, of course.

lo-so white trash developments -- you still haven't explained your chose of these words - the saying of the term " white trash " in the US is the most demeaning - it is a racial term - it is a code word that says you are included with all the negativity and slurs that are pointed to the black community - again can you please explain to the thaivisa community your decision to use these particular words - you could have said anything but you chose these words again please explain

    Wow

    Did someone hit the mark?

  20. I can recommend voipdiscount.com

I have been using it for years, whe you buy 10 euro worth of credit you get 5 hours free calls a week for 90 days. After that it's 1 or 2 euro cent a minute.

They have an app for smartphones as well called MobileVOIP so you can make calls to all your contacs without effort.

Compared to using Skype, 20 cents a minute to a mobile in Denmark, it's practically free.
