I don't think you could do 35 overseas trips for 5 million. I quite often travel Business class and so I know what First and Business cost. (I know what First costs because if you buy a Business class ticket, you get offers to upgrade to First). You need also to ask did he take his wife and/or girlfriend along.

Impunity for the rich and powerful undermines Thailand’s democracy
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Yes this immunity harms Thai democracy, which as we see in the aftermath of the recent election is in a pitiful state anyway. Even the thing with Thaksin is a stain on the reputations of these who did the deal. Revolting really.- 73 replies

Business leader sees tourism as key to Thailand’s economic growth
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Tourism is a fickle mistress. I wouldn't want my growth tied up in tourism thank you very much. Low margin and subject to too many risks. -

PA Accident insurance without WP. . . any ides?
retarius replied to oMega69's topic in Insurance in Thailand
My wife bought me an AXA policy when I first came to Thailand in 2009. It was very cover for 7000 baht. Millions of cover. No WP asked for. Some banks ask for a WP if you try to open and account, some don't. -
When you have to borrow, sometimes you are at the mercy of the lender. It's what loan sharking is all about, but it also applies to governments. When they have to borrow, they have to find someone to loan to them. If their spending is out of control, and debt to GDP ratio is high, then you can float your bonds, but no one buys them, and you lose control of your local rate. Thailand's government give-aways are not an encouraging signs that the government will live within its budget and it debt to GDP ratio is almost twice what it was when Yingluck was 'couped'. Prayut spent like a drunken sailor and Srettha doesn't look very much different. It lt looks to me like they are between a rock and a hard place and when they go to the market for a loan it might not be on terms that are as attractive as now, irrespective of NPLs. The lender isn't going to say "Oh your NPLs are sky high, so we'll give you a cut rate deal on your loan." Sorry, but rates follow risk if you have to borrow.

I just knew you would have something sensible to say, Bob. Seems like a lot of people want to tell us that it is raining where they are. If I live in the same place as them, I can look out of the window; if I live elsewhere, I don't care what the weather is where someone else, I don't even know, lives.

Thai women are pretty great in this regard. I have been in a few altercations in bars over the years and the good lady and her friends always put themselves in harm's way to help out. Pretty fearless when it comes down to it, and on more than one occasion they have prevented a brawl or helped me in it.

Also a gun owner here. I respectfully disagree with the OP. Introducing more and more gun laws will not solve the daily massacres in the US. The huge number of existing guns and scofflaws will ensure that anyone who really wants a gun will be able to get one irrespective of whether it is against the law or not. Some things, unfortunately have no simple solution and gun crime is one of those that has no simple solution. You cannot pass a law that will prevent or even reduce gun crime. You need an out of the box solution and a generational change in the attitude to guns. Guns need to become 'not cool anymore' and gun crime needs to become abhorrent, not simply a photo op for politicians. Do I have an instant solution? No there isn't one. Ad a start, you may want to use the educational system to indoctrinate kids against the gun culture in the US, instead oil using it to indoctrinate kids into the woke and tranny culture.

It will be temporarily good for Thai exports, but Thai interest rates have to go up sooner or later, so not much use long term. Thailand had the luxury of low GDP to borrowing ratio in the era of Yingluck, but Prayut's irresponsible spending has taken away that small advantage and soon investors in Thai government debt will demand higher interest rates to compensate for the increased risk. This will rebalance currency rates in the longer term.

Could Srettha Be Free Of Thaksin’s Influence? Academic
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
If I were Srettha, I would give Thaksin a wide berth. He's a divine figure and cannot be relied upon to bring in voters to PT. If an election were held today, PT would lose and MF would likely get more seats (although the EC might do something to rig the vote in this case). Again if I were Srettha, I would be thinking that I want to give myself the best chance of staying in power after them next election and I would pursue populist policies in rural Thailand. I'd stay in power until the end or until I got PT's popularity back up, and then hold a snap election. In this way he might get his 8 years in. If he courts Thaksin too closely now, he'll lose the next election, imho. -
No, never have and never will, unless I see one with my own eyes.

Did you get surgery in Thailand to repair a hiatal hernia ?
retarius replied to steph83's topic in Health and Medicine
I've had one for years and years. In the UK, the waiting list was hundreds of years. It doesn't bother me unduly, to be honest. If I really have a drinking session, over 6 or 7 beers (big bottles) I get discomfort and occasionally a reflux. I take Gaviscon for the reflux, and sometimes omeprazole. The only place I would risk having surgery in Thailand is Bumrungrad in Bangkok and it's an arm and leg for their 'package' offer. I'd try to live with it. -
Tiny passport tear denied boarding Thailand flight
retarius replied to roamer's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
I have had a number of problems with Middle Eastern airline companies. Petty stuff. I like Emirates with the big A 340 planes but have had several problems, large and small, funnily enough at Manchester Airport. The check in staff were so lazy and so arrogant that I (stupidly) lost my rag. I was kicked out by security. I swore I would never fly them again. Qatar is my least favourite. I found them picky and unhelpful and the equipment in my opinion is not as good as either Etihad or Emirates. Etihad was airline of choice to the UK, but I haven't flown them for a while because of COVID. My sympathies to you for your inconvenience.
