Hi, does anyone know of any Leica dealerships in Isaan? My old friend, my Leica camera has started playing up. I can no longer use the telephoto lens control.....nothing happens. I don't know if it is the camera body or the lens. I'm looking for a local Isaan dealership so I don't have to travel to Bangkok or Singapore.

Council of State makes digital wallet look even harder
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I cannot b relief the stupidity and complexity of this 'bribe.' Why have it digital adding massively to the costs, involves other players who will have a cut of the scheme eg the company that negotiates with the shopkeepers, the insane distance from shop rules, the un sane complexity of having old people, like me, learn about digital wallets, fill in forms etc. Mail out a check, idiots, which might stimulate GDP. -
How many millions of baht does one need to retire in Pattaya?
retarius replied to advancebooking's topic in Pattaya
You can't get 5% on a savings account here ( and you must keep the 800,000 in an instant access local savings account). Replenshing it from abroad will attract taxes from 1/2024. -
How many millions of baht does one need to retire in Pattaya?
retarius replied to advancebooking's topic in Pattaya
A lot. I had what I thought of as a huge oversupply of cash, but that was back in 2008. After inflation etc and huge cost of living rises, enormously expensive cars, electronic and electrical appliances, shoddy work done by contractors building my house, and purchases etc AND much lower than expected cash from US assets that I held (eg I bought six acres of land for $260,000 in 2003, and sold it in 2011 for $112,000 because the property taxes were killing me....I had of course valued the land at $260,000 in my calculations when I retired). My advice would be make sure you have 100 million baht (taxes already paid) if you wish to live comfortably in a nice house, never wish to worry about money or paying your medical bills, wish to drive nice cars (3 million baht+ vehicles), empty staff to make your life easier, fly business class, and DON'T PLAN ON LIVING FOR MORE THAN 15 to 20 years. I have a nice life for about 300-350,000 baht a month, including all medical exepenses (I had none until last year, but spent 1 million + last year). Thailand for me at least is not a nice p-lace to live if you are poor. Whiskey (rum), local beer, local cigarettes, local food, hotels and labour are very cheap, everything else is crazy expensive and inflation is astronomical despite what the government says. A European or UDS lifestyle is very expensive as all imported foods as crazy prices. -
Cogent points. I only read about this, this morning. To be honest when I rent cars in the US, I never even use a tankful of gas, so EV might be perfect for my needs which are always local. Maybe I'm the 'exception that proves the rule.' Does a Tesla 3 really do 0-60 in 3 seconds? I thought Tesla charged extra for improved performance? The article I read implied the ones Hertz are selling are basic Model 3s....although the website ads called them Model 3 Plus, I believe. I'm not into speed myself, being old I drive very sedately (and have a driver for anywhere further than the 6 kms into my local town or if I have a beer.) I have always wondered on self-driving cars if such cars are allowed to exceed speed limits or whether they obey all traffic laws? Further who is liable to pay the fines and court costs, would it be the maker of the car or the driver who was using auto-pilot? Same of course goes for accidents.

Thanks KhunLA, I read this morning that Hertz, who rushed into the EV market with a purchase of 100,000 Tesla Model 3s have found them too expensive to repair and they have impacted the bottom line for 2023. They are disposing of 20,000 of their older models for about $23000 each with about 80000 miles on them, and moving back to ICE for near future purchases. There was no word on the public's response to the sale. Hertz have them listed on their US website.

Can I get a loan?
retarius replied to AsparrownamedJack's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Sorry, having discussed this type of idea with the wife many years back, I very much doubt it, the land isn't even in your name....or shouldn't be. -
I find the headline claim hard to believe. Dubai is a real airport with a real national carrier that has really nice comfortable planes serviced by trained mechanics.

100% agree.

I'm sure when I buy my EV, current tech will be superceeded by much better batteries, that will do 1 million kms or 5 million as the manufacturers will claim. Personally I have zero desire to keep a vehicle for even 500,000. 160,000 kms is about the limit for me.

Berro, I put it in my will that I wanted to be cremated in Thailand. I noted that they should hold the funeral in the event that my sons wanted to come to the send off.

Caution advised over interest rate cuts by Bank of Thailand
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Jacko, you are correct, sir. Addicted to it in fact, and sadly business ideas that look great with interest rates at 2% lose their lustre when the rates rise to 5 % or 8% (the historical norm). -
Exactly, I want EVs to be on the market for 15 years or so, so that I can verify independently the manufacturers' claims about battery life. It is called wisdom. I think your enthusiasm for EVs has slightly blinded you to their defects. I'm sure you made a wise choice (for you) in purchasing one....equally I think I am making a wise choice (for me) in waiting for proof of their divine goodness before I buy.

Buy one second hand? You must be joking. Not unless the seller replaced the battery prior to sale and I had 8 years warranty. No I doubt there will be too many second hand buyers until the batteries are demonstrated to last the period that the lying manufacturers claim. I'm sick of manufacturers' claims, having been robbed on ''up to' claims on internet speeds and 'as low as' claims for cheap flights.

Interesting....is this per day, per week, per year? I thought there would be more suicides.

Caution advised over interest rate cuts by Bank of Thailand
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
No central banks are independent. Rate cuts are irresponsible at this point because inflation, at least as measured in my supermarket, is far from the silly numbers we see issued by the government. Get inflation down as measured by what a poor man eats, and get it down for a sensible period of time (6 months to one year) before embarking on business friendly rate cuts. -

So why was Ray Epps, an FBI agent not sent to prison for telling people at the 'insurrection" to go in side the Capitol building....people got several years for not doing much and some people who were not even there were sent to prison, whereas Ray Epps the key figure in the FBI inspired "insurrection" captured on camera agitating and inciting escaped with probation.
