I have this book " The King Never smiles " but not got round to reading it as I took it home last trip and not due back in UK till mid next year, if I do get through with it I will bring it back and trade it back into where I found it in Canterbury Tales Bookshop, I stay above there so am on the spot when good stuff comes in, I have read a few of Bean Barretts and they are good reads.
I am just about to start Welcome to hel_l by Colin Martin so see what that holds.

I heard the food prices are a tad high, is that so, whats the average and do they have a good Steak ??
-
I have read a few and Yes Damage done is a good one, I am sure everyone has read Private Dancer by now, Dean Barrett's books are quite good and I met him in Bkk he is a funny guy and very knowledgeable about Thailand.
The Big Mango by Jake Needham, Pattaya 24/7 by Chris G Moore, Welcome to hel_l by Colin Martin is a good one, The last executioner, (cant remember the Author) Thailand Fever and a few more.
I am a little fortunate as I stay at the Canterbury Tales where there is a bookshop on the ground floor in the Cafe and spend many a leisurely hour with a Beer and Book and they do the trade in thing, they have far more choice and books than the other Pattaya bookshops and offer the best trade for books from UK

Jimmy White is in town and on the 19th December 2010 is doing an afternoon/evening chat etc at the Pig & whistle soi 7, then on 20th he is doing a book signing of his Autobiography at Canterbury Tales Cafe & Bookshop in soi Chaiapoon, then that night he is at Hot shots pool hall in North Pattaya some where near Big C.
Google the pig & whistle & Canterbury Tales as they both have details on their websites.

By far the best one in Pattaya is Canterbury Tales Bookshop, I used to use beach books but the last time I went in looking for Lee Child, Forsythe, Stephen Leather books they had very few but I found most of all in the Canterbury, as well as the latest Child and Leather.
Also a huge amount of the Thailand Books, some old hard to find Chris C Moore & his new one the Receptionist,

There are lots of Culture shocks here in Thailand, I wonder what percentage make the grade to stay or cant handle things and go.

I think your over reacting, its easy, dont use them and tell everyone you meet what happens then maybe the word will spread.
-
If you think BKK will be better than Pattaya I think its time you left Thailand maybe

I spend half the year in soi Chaiyapoon, breakfast everyday, chat with many folks, ex-pats, tourists alike and never heard of anyone being pick pocketed or anything like it/.

Actually, there are many successful businesses on Soi Chayapoom. You've missed Canterbury Tales, Neeroys, there's a bakery that seems to be in it for the long haul (Best Bakery Pattaya?), Seaside II has been there forever, the French restaurant next to Le Snack (Le Cap Breton) has been there quite a few years (at least 5), and that's just to name a few. In addition, the owner told me has other businesses in Pattaya, so he's no pie in the sky dreamer--he has experience (unless he lied to me, which I doubt as we were just chatting).
I'll be very surprised if this place closes in 6 months. However, I won't be super surprised as I've seen so many places close quickly just as you predict.
To the OP thanks for the review, I'll check the place out in the next few days.
Slightly off-topic, but can anyone tell me how many years 'Crazy Daves' has been open?
Is he still an alcaholic, I heard he was dying of it. ??

The breakfast is worth about 10 baht so........
-
Century Chonburi I think is 700 baht for green fee caddie and cart, its not the best and the facilities are poor but great price.
Its about 40 mins from Pattaya
-
Looks like the Tan may suffer there.
-
Its a great place for people watching, a bit noisy on the soi itself to stay but its side soi's have some good Guest houses and Hotels, there is something for everyone a great hub for everything.

You will get no help from the British Embassy or consulate....

I use Tops book shop but I still find 75% of what I am looking for in Canterbury Tales Bookshop and they normally offer me a better trade in on any books I take there for trade that are not from there.
I just found Caught & Play dead by Harlan Coben, The big Burn by Timothy Egan, & Stieg Larrson's 3 books the Girl who played with fire and the girl with the dragon Tattoo, The girl who kicked the Hornets nest.
-
I found Gregs overpriced, I used to use when staying down that way, Crazy Dave's not bad apart from the smell of cats piss and him when pissed, I use Canterbury Tales Cafe now, although the girls are a bit daft they mean well and I stay there as well, the best thing about the place is the regulars everyday who are very knowledgeable and good for most info, oh and the bookshop is superb.

There are 2 good ones in soi chayapoon just by Oasis a go go cheap beer fun girls, also at new plaza along opposite new central mall and soi bahkow
-
I am in Canterbury Tales Cafe & Bookshop in Pattaya just off soi Baukow and most the rooms have a lounge and bedroom with plenty of room and sofa bed so all you need be carefull is the balcony.
