  1. We may be looking at a case of "I am above the law. I am the son of a powerful asshol_e. I am beyond reproach. Nobody can touch me. Watch me, I can do anything. Main, steal, kill, anything I want to do. The police will never touch me. The courts will never rule against me. My father is richer that God, as he has been stealing from the Thai people for decades".

Reminds me of the incident in bangkok bar a couple of years ago where a policeman lost his life.

  2. I don't know how many 'Canadian Barry's' there are in Chiang Mai , but the one I know well, is seething at the moment as his idyllic retirement is about to be cut short by the Canadian government who are currently debating a new law that would require him (and all Canadian retirees) to spend at least 6 months per year in Canada or lose their pensions. Australians already find it difficult to access their pensions if they choose to live outside Australia and Brits get their pensions frozen if they move here. It seems that the retirees home countries aren't keen to see them take their disposable income to exotic foreign locations like Chiang Mai!

Any Australians out there living in Chiang Mai and still manage get age pension from Centerlink, please share your advise?

It is only the disability pensioners that are having/about to have a problem.

Old age pensioners are still OK.

  3. When I came to CM back in 2001, we had the crackdown by Purachi the Minister of the Interior.

The girls where ordered to dress more modestly and stay inside the bars and not be Active on the street.

The 'Tale' doing the rounds in Johns Bar was that there was to be no girly bars or Go Go inside the Old City Moat area.

Johns Place lost his Go Go bar.

It was also said that Adult nightlife was to be moved down to Chiang Mai Land.

    john

Not quite correct; John was not making money from the go-go bar so he shut it down.

Nothing to do with the BiB; actually one of his brothers happens to be No 2 in the force.

  4. If had 100m baht under the bed and he thought that the NACC were delving into his affairs, then it would make sense to organize a burglary but only declare only 5 million stolen.

You have to think these things through carefully.

It would appear that a lot of sub plots exist in the main ploy.

Life is difficult in Thailand for those who have a lot of money that can't be accounted for.

    Serves him right.

  5. Well I had to get a copy of my licence notarised for he tax people. So I had my land lord sign his name on the copy.and I wrote official notary under his name and problem solved. He didn't have a clue nor did the tax people.
I'd be careful. That could be illegal what you did.
Where and how could they find out?Oh; and he is the official notary for the place I live at so no problem.
  6. Well I had to get a copy of my licence notarised for he tax people.

He didn't have a clue nor did the tax people.

  7. For those questioning why we need more malls it is simple; its called planning.

Developers can see a need for more malls in say 5-10 years

There may not be a need for them right now but by building now the developers save a lot of money. Land prices and cost of building will

be a lot more expensive in 5-10 years from now. Plus any money they make between now and then is simply gravy.

The way the developers see it is; that say building the mall in 10 years time will cost them 10 billion baht but if they build now for 6 billion baht, they have made 4 billion baht (even if the malls don't open until 5-10years time) because the mall was planned to be built in that 5-10 years any way.

  8. To find a perfect microcosm of Thailand and the country's problems, just look to Phuket: a beautiful island which, a little more than a decade ago, was poised to become a yachting and resort mecca. Now years of mismanagement and corruption have turned the island into a crime bonanza and the yachting world has moved on to greener pastures...never to return. The best part about this is that Thailand and Thais haven't even noticed. They're still trying to plug their little crime-infested paradise as if it really were heaven on earth.

    Precisely.

It started with Pattaya, now Phuket and next I can see Samui and then Hua Hin which will cause a few ripples.

  9. Thida warned the Democrat Party against resisting the globalisation of democracy and defended red-shirt street politics as different from the Democrats, as the red shirts were robbed by the coup in 2006.

Wrong. The red shirts only came about as a result of the coup.

Reconciliation will only come about as a result of Thaksin's imprisonment or death.

The Thai political system is very closely aligned to the Westminster system which IMO is past it's use by date.

The red and yellow shirts are nothing but tame militias which might be OK in third world countries but heaven help a militia that tried to survive in the real world.

U Ohhh is Thailand regarded as 1st, 2nd or 3rd world?

  10. Went to Sihanookville to dodge Songkraan recently. It's Cambodia's beach front.

Like a smaller Hua Hin without the girlie bars.

    Very cheap.

A CNX/BKK/Phnom Penh Plane trip return cost 6000 baht (advance booking air asia) and a 5 hr bus trip ( I think about $14).

Very enjoyable and lots to do or not do.

Recommended despite the bus trip which is not that bad. Has a 30 min break in it.

  11. Ngung Hia (sp?) means stop. Get a laugh from the caddies when the ball is heading to the water or sand when I use it.

    Rum ter ter for delicious.

Chung mun ter (sp?) for no worries, that's ok no problem etc

  12. It seems to me that the exchange rates also depend on the financial policies of the country involved.

Switzerland has been artificially keeping the Euro at 0.83 for weeks or months now, in order to keep exports on an even keel. (When we were getting 1 Euro for a Frank I, along with many other people living near the borders, went to France to do my shopping). This indirectly also affects the Thai Baht rate, which after jumping to 41 last August has been hovering around 33/34 for a long time now.

Switzerland does have the reserves to do this of course, but they will be back tracking some day I should imagine, something to look forward to in a selfish way for me.

If you can get 1 Euro for a Frank what is a Bruce worth?
