Oh Koh Phi Phi, What have you become?
2long replied to Cornish Pasty's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
In 2002 mass tourism was very much there, and so were the touts offering anything and everything. Local mafia rules mean that the 20B needs to be collected on the island, and not added to the ferry ticket. Bear in mind that electricity on the island is more than the mainland, and getting (and keeping cold) drinks such as water costs more than on the mainland. Therefore, prices are higher. This is a sad but unavoidable case of somewhere getting too popular for its own good, and it happens all around the world. I lived on Phi Phi during the filming of The Beach movie, and ever since then its popularity has sky rocketed. -
UK Breaking Barriers: Blaise Metreweli Becomes First Woman to Lead MI6
2long replied to Social Media's topic in World News
It's not 'breaking barriers' it's just another human with two arms and two legs getting a job. All the time we go on about women or people from other races / minority groups we are effectively reinforcing the issue. Women are humans and so are black people. Why do we have to point it out every time these people achieve something? -

Why does the report refer to expats / expatriates, when surely it should refer to all non-Thai nationals / all foreigners? -

2long replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
No Thailand doesn't battle a Covid surge. Some people benefit from scaring the public. It's all a lot of nonsense.- 147 replies

Transport Direct Thailand-US Flights Poised for Takeoff After 2015 Halt
2long replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Considering the distance, and the amount of people that the can attract to pay, I feel a one-stop flight is always the best option. I find Emirates hard to beat. I'm in the UK and came on EVA, who I love. -

Although I disagree with some of the categories for getting a DTV (cooking class and 'influencer' for example) it's perfect for digital nomads. But as @NoDisplayName rightly points out, any genuine applicants shouldn't be 'just over the border waiting to be let back in, trying not to spend all their money.' I have a DTV and I really hope that the bad eggs don't ruin it for those who deserve it from merit. Let's hope that, as others have suggested, the delays are partly due to bad applications. Although I feel it could be the consulates and embassies not being as fantastic as the Thai guys at HCMC.

Recent trip to UK with Qatar air- A very sad, heartbreaking visit.

I'm currently in the UK, in a nice area down south, on a month's vacation. Every year prices are going up (except petrol recently) and shops are closing. If it was for the UK's great weather, delicious food and beautiful girls, I would hand my passport back. Oh, hang on a mo! 🙄🙃🧐 -

Report Expat Confusion Grows as Thailand Cracks Down on Helmet Law Violations
2long replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I have ridden bikes in BKK for more than 20 years. If I ride locally, I don't wear a lid, but on bigger roads... always! We all know 'it's a risk you take, and it's your life/head/brains.' We all know the cops here are corrupt and lazy. I like the way Vietnam sorted the problem almost overnight. However, Vietnam isn't Thailand. There's as much chance of this working NATIONWIDE and by all people and at all times (like in Europe) as there is of stopping Thais gambling, lying, going to the temple, cheating on their wives blah blah blah. It's just the way they are. And let's face it, many of us who live here live here and love it because of how they are. Things won't change, and it's sad that too many people die on the roads, but the corruption and law breaking and innocent dishonesty is what makes the people of this country great. -
