Hi
This might be what you have read, various under populated towns in rural Italy offering incentives
http://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/italy-town-pays-people-to-move-intl/index.html
Here is a listing for a small old house in Sicily at 50K Euro ( negotiable ) Stamp duty/property purchase tax for foreigners is 10 % I believe.

The first problem with the Mediterranean is that it is cool and often wet in winter. The second is that it is very boring. Older expats are mainly couples grimly slogging on, waiting for their grandchildren to visit them. Lone males on the lookout for cheap pussy are not appreciated.
Hi
Your first sentence is valid. Some parts of Europe have winters that are not overly cold or long though.
As to the boring bit, talking mostly about the part of Italy that I visit and will stay,( small town in the north just 5kms from Como, beautiful Lake and views.) it is not boring for me.
Quiet at times yes, but I like quiet peaceful and relaxing sometimes.
Last sentence, that subject is fairly low on my list of priorities.
Anyway for this year I am just spending the summer months there but am looking further in to the future.
In the shorter term may be splitting my time, with some spent in Europe then back to SE Asia for winters.
I just want to keep options open.

Captain Jack.
Firstly I like your posts.
Some hopefully constructive comments :
I think Cambodia could be a non starter for you as insurance including medivac is going to be costly.
I think perhaps a fresh topic in the health insurance section here might give you some ballpark figures.
Sheryl is very knowledgable and helpful as well as Cambodia experienced.
The sharing life idea sounds OK, might work.
Another matter and I am only half guessing here but you seem to lack a network of friends that could act as support when you are feeling down or just need/want some company.
You have already had Britman make the kind offer of meeting up with him and his expat friends in Cambodia, yes I noticed you have acknowledged that.
It is a shame you have ruled out Thailand but understand you.
I have lived in naklua about 10 years now.
Got to know a lot of people, some have become good friends.
If at some stage you change your mind, I could meet up with you and could also introduce you to expat/long stayers.
As per my topic European alternatives to Thailand, I will be out of Thailand during the summer months.
So, somewhat similar to yourself I am considering my options for the future.
I am actually impressed by the quality of replies I have received. Many people do try to help.
As to you feeling you need to defend yourself, I only noticed 1 post I would consider harsh.A moderator posted others had been removed.I did not read those.
There really are some people on your various threads that I feel have tried to help and also understand you a bit better.
Different posters have different posting styles, that is only natural.
To finish I wish you Good Luck and a happy life wherever you choose.

Portugal , very reasonable living costs, not more than Thailand.Spain, friends of mine have just bought a lovely 1 bedroom apartment, huge terrace, real quality construction apparently, 70 000£, cheaper than here considering the quality. I’ve lived in Spain , I loved it there’, moved because of work/ family to the south of France. South of France has some very reasonably priced areas, renting’ probably a bit more than here tho. Beautiful to live tho, it’s where I spend the other 7 months of my life. Rent an Airbnb for a few months in each country, great life.
Hi
All 3 of the places you have mentioned sound good, as does your life.
Well Done

Cyprus, got to be the place.
Good climate, long hot summers mild spring and autumn, cool but short winters.
Easy lifestyle, cheap property that you can own, low tax with high threshold.
English spoken just about everywhere.
Thanks, that also could be an option.
Thanks to the many useful suggestions and info, my short list is growing

Hi
Very interesting topic going here re. Latin America alternatives to Thailand.
That region probably has more appeal to those from the US and Canada than those from the UK or other European countries.
So how about alternatives in Europe, or nearby, outside of Europe ideas welcome.
Somewhere with a nice warm/hot climate.
For myself I detest the cold.
Portugal and Spain seem popular.
I have my own reasons but after living in Thailand for 10 years, with an equal number of holiday visits previously I fancy a break.
Booked flights already to spend 5 months in Italy ( Summer months )
I will return to Thailand but maybe " split " my time in the future.
Italy too cold for me in the winter months.
Any thoughts as to a pleasant climate country in or near Europe ?
Tenerife ? I know very little about it, anyone stayed there long term ? or even just holidayed often.
Thanks

Many Thanks Alex for a useful reply.
I was thinking that getting to Soi Lengkee/ buakhou then onwards by motorbike taxi was the best option.
You have confirmed that. That is what I will do.
Yes, had considered the klang/arunothai route and also thought it would be longer.
Cheers

Hi
Is there a way to go from naklua to soi bongkot using bahtbus only ? ( Other than charter ) Even if 2 or 3 changes required.
I think not but worth an ask.
Failing that how close can one get before needing a motorbike taxi for the "final leg ". or short walk.
Here is where I am going to Saturday, prefer minimal use of motorbike taxis.
Thanks

It is a somewhat confusing situation.
Per the OP, on oxygen, cannot fly and 73yrs. of age and visa/permission close to expiry.
Deal with the last issue first. IMO
The very first reply by Ubonjoe suggested a possible solution for extension on medical grounds.
Another poster also suggested the same. Both those posters very au fait with immigration matters.
OP states he is in Pattaya in a reply to another poster.
Several options, ask his current doctor to write the medical note that he is unfit to travel.
Phone either of BPH or PIH hospitals and if unable to travel to either, request a doctor home visit.
Dr. Olivier will also do home visits.
The OP does seem in fear, yep can sort of understand that but try to deal with 1 problem at a time.
I wish him well but some further info might help others to help him.

Hi
I agree with both Crossy and Britman on the banking aspect so will just comment on a suggestion re investments.
H -L the company you are currently with do have a good reputation within the industry, hopefully something can be sorted out with them.
If not take a look at Interactive Brokers, US company but have websites specific to many different countries, Including UK & HK.
Very low charges, biggest US on line broker. Good reputation.
My brother has used them for many years, opening a US based account, although he is British but an expat in Europe.
Take a look, contact then to see if they can be of use to you.
https://www.interactivebrokers.co.uk/en/home.php#
Another one is Saxo bank. Danish but again operating in many different countries, including Singapore.
Good reputation.
Both the above do a lot of business with very active traders but also have options for investors.

Hi
I will try.
French - La Petite Planete, soi Day Night near Tukcom.
Reasonable prices, 3 course set menu 380 baht. Portions slightly on the small side but v/good quality IMO.
Drinks prices pocket wallet friendly.
Can also order a la carte if you wish, still works out a good value proposition
https://www.facebook.com/pages/La-Petite-Planete-Restaurant/319590311388496
Italian - Grottino soi 33 naklua, near the Doplhin roundabout.
Extensive menu, indoor air con section , and some seats & tables outside,
Sample prices. Tagliatelle 200 baht, spaghetti 240 baht, lasagne 280 baht.
Pizzas, large choice, from 200 baht basic to 380/400.
Drinks prices maybe a touch above average, not bad though.
Excellent food, excellent service.
https://www.facebook.com/Grottino-Restaurant-Pizzeria-533421586792058/
Greek/Mediterranean El Greco, somewhat hard to find.
Very modest pricing, also there is an option to order half size on several of the mains ( handy if you want to try a small selection) Greek chef/owner couple, nice people.
Service good, prices very fair, including drinks.

Hope that helps a bit

To answer the question, yes I would go.
Not gay but have zero issue with gay people, whether customers or employees there.
I have actually been a few times before but not in a long while. ( Live in naklua and a bit lazy when it comes to going the other end of town). I have enjoyed my Jomtien visits, various restaurants/bars.
The French bakery & Tinnies sound interesting, excellent reviews when I have looked online.
I have a couple of questions.
In addition to the French bakery is there also a French restaurant there ? If so what is it called? Please.
Is Fantasy bar still open ? been there several times, always liked it
Thanks.

The waitress was in the wrong, no doubt about it.
You should have been given your change and then up to you what you do with it.
It does happen here, you will not be the only one.

I have also been to Vientiane for a holiday break.
Really enjoyed it. Good choice of cafes/restaurants with good selections of European food.
My lunch there was usually a nice filled fresh baguette and a glass of wine. Lovely.
Night times a nice dinner.
Some beerlao also consumed. Way ahead of any Thai beer and actually one of the best tasting beers I have ever had.

From the way I read it, this particular law concerns 'vehicles'.
For a couple of years now the State Railway of Thailand has banned the sale of alcohol after a girl was raped and murdered on a train, by an SRT employee who was high on drugs and had also drunk some beer on the train.
I found it sad that everyone had to suffered because of one stupid person.
I also got the impression later that not only was the sale of alcohol banned on trains, but also the consumption.
Can someone confirm this, as for a couple of decades I used to enjoy a few beers on the overnight trains here.
Am I committing an offence by bringing and consuming my own beer in my compartment on the train, and what might the penalty be?
Hi
Pls. do not take the following as 100 % but I vaguely recall a friend of mine on a long train journey, who had not taken any beer on board but a nearby passenger had so. It was noticed and the beers were confiscated. No penalty.
I was not on the train myself, we were merely chatting about the journey when he returned.

Hi Captain Jack.
A nice and sensible post.
I wish you Good Luck.
After about 10 years of living here and a prior 10 years of visiting I am considering spending less time here, not perhaps abandoning Thailand though.Have become a bit jaded, already booked flights to UK/Italy for 5 months away from Thailand. Visa currently OK through to next year.
I know already that there are certain positive points to Thailand I will miss.
It is a convenient place to live/stay, the ordinary Thais seem fine to me.
I have mixed thoughts.
All the Best to you.

Nothing wrong with the title and it happens to be one of my favourite threads.
Hit and run also has the same usual meaning in the UK as the US.
OT here sorry but I do some derivative ( stock ) trading , declaring some on a trading board.
If I am in and out quickly with a profit, I sometimes use the expression good " smash n grab " .
which usually means stealing something and running away.
I think I will use " hit and run " next time.
To try to get back on topic, although I have not visited yet, speaking to a German friend of mine he holds " Bramburi " restaurant in high regard. Quality food, large portions, reasonable prices.
It is on soi 12 naklua, German owner/chef.

Many appear to have Rooster syndrome, the 'I'm alright Jack attitude', not in the slightest concerned for the plight of some of their fellow human beings, I just hope that some of this brigade get the 'Really difficult day' in an immigration office as many of us have, no matter how whiter than white their application is (as mine have been before) and get chucked out on their ear, no matter how many Gazillions of Baht they have in the bank.
Some of you, yes you know who I'm talking to, really need to read some of the horror stories that have been published and then you might get the full picture, just wait, it could be your bubble that gets burst next X X X
Very well said, one of the best posts on the thread.
I happen to be OK ( I think ) until Jan next year, after that do not know.
Have a Plan B already in place. Somewhat tired of living here.
Not married to a Thai albeit in a LT relationship with one. No property owned here, abroad yes.
I feel sorry for some that have invested here( in terms of buying a property, paid for education for those they love etc.) and in emotion ) and wish to live a simple modest life.
Those with Thai family who are worried they might have to leave or cannot meet requirements to stay.
A shame.
Plenty of selfish posters who care not of others.
Sadly that seems to be the way of the modern world.

Hi
Yes Cambodia Inter still in business, been many years since I used them but a couple of my friends used them last year and paid 2400/2500 baht for the visa run.
Another option could be Maneerat Travel, on soi 13/2 soi Post Office.
Tel. no. is 038 421719.
I believe their charge is 2300 baht.

Hi
I think you would likely get a reasonable response in the Health and Medicine forum section.

Maybe your post will be moved there.
I have no medical knowledge, cannot help.

I agree with you 100%. I also agree with the OP.
I have met loads of expats/long stayers/winter snowbirds.
Majority by far have been OK, a handful have become friends.
Fairly large mix of nationalities, mostly European.
