  1. Then its just as well my card was issued by CITIBANK AUSTRALIA. There is an extensive thread on their 'fee free banking' on the whirlpool forums in Australia but board rules prohibit me from linking to it - the thread confirms that CITI Australia customers continue to get cash from ATMs all over the world with no FTF. No idea how long this will last and I suspect that it was part of CITI's marketing push to get their share of a very lucrative market - whatever the case, it's fantastic.

FWIW, I was thrilled this morning to be able to pull 30K baht from the same Krungsi ATM which gave me grief a couple of days back. Still had to pay 180 baht for the privilege but that blow is softened when I can walk away with that much cash from a single visit to the ATM - thanks to those who mentioned Krungsi earlier in this thread.

Next time use a TMB machine and you will also get a 30K pull but the fee will only be 150 THB (unless they have raised it since 1 June)

Schedule B (Form 1040), Interest and Ordinary Dividends

Use Schedule B if any of the following applies.

    • You had over $1,500 of taxable interest or ordinary dividends.
    • You received interest from a seller-financed mortgage and the buyer used the property as a personal residence.
    • You have accrued interest from a bond.
    • You are reporting original issue discount (OID) in an amount less than the amount shown on Form 1099-OID.
    • You are reducing your interest income on a bond by the amount of amortizable bond premium.
    • You are claiming the exclusion of interest from series EE or I U.S. savings bonds issued after 1989.
    • You received interest or ordinary dividends as a nominee.
    • You had a financial interest in, or signature authority over, a financial account in a foreign country or you received a distribution from, or were a grantor of, or transferor to, a foreign trust. Part III of the schedule has questions about foreign accounts and trusts.

  3. Using DHL is a good way to ensure customs of around 30% are applied. Companies like DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc., can get things through customs fast because they do such an outstanding job in collecting customs for the govt...makes the govt happy. I would recommend you use the regular postal system whenever possible to lower the chance of customs being applied.

I've never had problems like this with Fedex

If you have never had this problem with FEDEX then you should be buying lots of lottery tickets since you must be the luckiest expat in Thailand. The largest number of complaints about unreasonable customs charges reported here at TV, are usually posted by first time FEDEX users

  4. Here is a free web proxy that I have used in the past to access the US Social Security web site from Thailand

    http://www.vpnbook.com/webproxy

Just copy and paste the SS website url into the box and it will take you right to the Social Security web site and then you can navigate from there

Since this is just a web proxy and not a VPN service your information is pretty safe since the SS site still shows up as https:

Just remember that you must log into the Social Security , gov site based upon the following listed hours:

    Service Hours

My Social Security is available during the following service hours (Eastern Time)

    Day
    Service Hours
    Monday - Friday
    5:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m.
    Saturday
    5:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.
    Sunday
    8:00 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.
    Federal Holidays
Same hours as the day the holiday occurs

  5. Chubby, re your questions above.

My Cap One credit cards have not offered the chip function as yet. And in looking at the Cap One website for Quicksilver, it shows a photo image of the card, and that image doesn't show any chip.

Just received the new "Quicksilver" and it definitely does not have a chip and to be perfectly honest with you it is the thinnest credit card that I have. I have serious doubts about it's life expectancy. Unless they are using some special space age plastic I can't see it lasting long enough to reach it's expiration date

  6. Buffalo Rescue, are you still trying to get your girlfriends condo in your name ? as detailed here;

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/722886-still-possible-to-buy-in-company-name/

    and here:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/723364-how-to-get-someone-to-sign-me-a-30-year-lease-on-condo-not-house/

No matter how many times you ask the question or re-spin it, the answer is going to remain the same

  7. If you are serious about UPLOADING then you should be uploading using a FTP uploader such as FileZilla, but even then you are going to have a real problem getting any quality of service here in Thailand. Not only are the upload speeds available here in the lower digits but the system is not designed for uploading, and is barely acceptable for downloading

I would be interested in which "different" country you found acceptable upload speeds. Even here in the US my upload speed using cable Internet is just a fraction of my download speed

  8. as a usa retiree you are allowed to earn 35000 US dollars tax free, however I do not get that and still a private pension from usa still deduct tax have written evert where complaining to no avail, so get a refund every year but still a pain in the ass.

Source for your statement regarding $35K .please, As well as the source of your a private pension from usa still deduct tax .

It is called withholding and YOU determine how much based upon the IRS Form W-4 that you submit and is withheld from either earnings, pensions, IRA distributions, or US Social Security. All you have to do is submit a new W-4 to whoever manages your private pension telling them that you want 0 withheld and then you will not have to file to get the money back (refund)

  9. I only use the memory stick for watching downloaded movies and TV programs on the telly so the speed is not really important. It just made me curious when memory stick was so much slower to load a movie than the Seagate drive.

Didn't realize there was so much difference in the various sticks, seems like SanDisk Extreme is the way to go for speed but at what a price. w00t.gif

Think I'll just stick with the normal speeds.

May not make much difference in watching but sure makes a lot of difference when transferring the data to the USB stick from the computer

  10. I spend 8 months in Thailand and 4 months in the US and I have found the O-A Visa to be the best for my lifestyle since I am able to time the visa so that I only have to get a new one every two years. Dealing with Thais overseas at Embassies and Consulates is much easier, IMHO, than dealing with Thai Immigration here or The US Embassy

90 day reports are getting easier and easier all the time since Immigration offices are slowly moving to computerize the process but since you will be here only for six months that would mean you would only have to do two, since there is no 90 day report requirement when you are not here

The only wrinkle on this would be your wife and her status in the US. Dual citizenship would allow her to use her Thai passport to enter the Kingdom but I don't know if she could use her US passport to re-enter the US without the requisite entry and departure stamps from Thailand.

If she does have a US passport then you would have to crunch the numbers and determine if an O-A Multiple for both of you would be the best way to go ( $200 X 2 = $400 every two years ). Since you say you reside in Florida you could use the Embassy in Washington for the O-A Visas by mail, which they prefer

  11. Part of the 5,000 that the lawyer wants is 1,000 THB just for "updating" the company so that the water company will install a new meter and provide you with water. Since it is in a company name you will pay a higher rate (commercial) than do Thais or foreigners not in a company name. The electric company does not play this game, every house pays the same based upon usage

If I were you I would also have him work a little harder and get both electric and water auto debited from your Thai bank account at the same time. Not that much more trouble since I am sure that the lawyer is not going to do the running around but a low paid clerk

Personally I would pay 5,000 THB just to not have to deal with that miserable bitch at the water company

  12. I really can't see them being ready to open in 2 months but the website looks decent enough

Web site says absolutely nothing about parking and the graphic: Park Info > Park Map does not show any parking and the entrance clearly will be on the North Bound lane of Sukumvit

  13. Is your SIM active? Yes

Do you have a signal? Yes

    Can you make/receive calls? Yes

    Are you pre-paid? Yes

What is the reply to *101*9# ? Your remaining balance is 68.29 Baht, valid until 28 Jan 15(in 243 day(s))

What does it say under "Network"? DTAC

    Service state? In service

    Roaming? Not Roaming

What does it say at the bottom of the screen when you pull down the status bar? Up Time 982:17:54

My best guess remains that you are on DTAC GSM1800.

In any event, please do relax as you remain unaffected until 2018.

    Thank you, answers in red
