  1. As far a PayPal is concerned their rules are country specific. My US PayPal account does not require a US bank account but uses my US based credit card for payments. My Thai PayPal account requires a Thai bank and when I applied the only option for bank account it gave me that I could use was my Bangkok Bank account using my BB ATM card number. They did allow the use of my US based credit card while they verified the bank account

Once the BB account had been verified the US based credit card could no longer be used and when trying to add it to my Thai PayPal account it was refused since PayPal would only allow a Thai based credit card to be linked

I only opened a Thai PayPal account because some merchants (notably China and Hong Kong) will only ship to a verified PayPal address and the only way to get my Thai address verified was via a Thai PayPal account

PayPal for Thailand is handled out of Singapore and their Customer Service Representatives speak excellent English so either email them or call with your inquiries

  2. I would contact the Australian Embassy in Bangkok. I am sure that they would know since one of the benefits of foreign assignments is import of a car duty free and they are required to ship them back out (unless they are here for 5 years, very unusual)

  3. Since you don't know what you want or what you want it for I would suggest that you and your wife go to your local amphur and inquire about their paperwork requirements to issue you a Yellow Book to show your residency in your wife's house. Some amphurs make it quite simple to get a Yellow Book, others make you jump through many hoops. Once you find out what yours' require then you can decide if it is worth the trouble to get one

If you just need to have something for Immigration to show that you live here for either a 90 day check or extension of stay, they will normally accept just a utility bill in your name. Telephone or Internet are the easiest to get in your name since they just want your money and really don't care whose name the account is in.

On the other hand if you want to buy and register a motor vehicle or obtain a five years drivers license you will need a Residency Certificate for a small cost from the Immigration Office that does your 90 day report or a Residency Certificate issued by your Embassy for a much higher price

  4. went into Tesco's on Sukhumvit today and they had no wine boxes at all, red or white.

And they were suddenly moving all their wine around and the whole display of white wine was unmarked. When I asked the young lady where the prices were she took a bottle and started to go somewhere to price it. I figured that it would take a long time to get all the prices of the white that they had in stock so I told her to forget it

I really don't understand Thai marketing / retailing sometimes. They can only sell alcohol between the hours of 11AM-2PM and again from 5PM-12AM yet they can't time their constant stock rotation to do it when they can't sell or at a minimum only move priced bottles to priced displays

  5. You are going to have a hard time if you in insist on aluminum. Using standard Thai steel almost any welding shop will make them for you, with removable screens

Unfortunately I have never seen them made with built in locking mechanism. All have just a dead bolt for the inside and a padlock holder / dead bolt on the outside

  6. I am here for 8 months of the year and I call my credit card co. and bank and inform them of my travel plans and so far I have never had a problem using my cards here

Of course you would have to have Internet banking so that you could transfer money and pay bills but that is a given

Call your bank and the credit card company and see what their policy is. If they won't honor your request then get a new bank or credit card.

We have many long time expats here that never go back and so long as they maintain a residence address in their home country no one has a problem

  7. JimGant: Thanks for clarifying the trigger amount that requires the filing of the IRS Form 8938. It would be nice, as you say, if we only had to file the one form. I will be spending 40 days in California this summer and I'd better investigate how that affects my requirement to file the 8938 and maybe pay California state taxes. Yikes! I may decrease my stay to under 30 days.

Considering how mercenary and expensive California State Income taxes are, If I was from California, spending most of my time in LOS, I would make a quick trip and establish residency in a no income tax state such a Nevada

  8. Let me also, meanwhile, add a note of caution about credit card cash advances in general. In terms of not having cash advance fees, PenFed's credit cards are certainly the exception to the common banking rule for advances of fees, fees, fees.

So, before going down the path of a credit card cash advance either at the counter or by ATM at an international location, it becomes very important to check out and understand the terms and fees disclosures of that particular card.

The variations can get to be quite curious. For example, I was recently looking at the debit and credit cards offered by the State Department Federal Credit Union, another government service oriented credit union that also makes membership open to the general public via joining an association.

For whatever reasons, their debit card has a 1% foreign currency fee, but their credit card has no foreign currency fee. And with their credit card, you can do counter cash advances with no fee from SDFCU. But if you use the same credit card to do an ATM cash advance, SDFCU will charge you a flat $3 fee.

And that's a somewhat kind-hearted credit union. if you start getting into the credit card products offered by the various mega banks, that's where the foreign currency % fees and cash advance fees and really hefty cash advance interest rates really begin to pile up. So cash advancer beware.

As an aside, SDFCU also has the lowest SWIFT fee that I have found. $20 will get you as much as you want to send to Thailand

  9. Thai drivers license has passport number but in 3 years I have never been asked to produce a passport,

Means nothing, that was the passport number you had when you got your license. It now may be expired or even worse you are here on an overstay. Don't count on the police accepting your license as proof of your legality
