  1. Manager Jurgen Klopp believes Chelsea are "definitely" favourites for Sunday's Carabao Cup final but said a depleted Liverpool "will go for it". The Premier League leaders had nine senior players missing for Wednesday's 4-1 win against Luton at Anfield. Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, Thiago, Dominik Szoboszlai, Joel Matip, Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez were unavailable. Liverpool face Chelsea in Sunday's final at Wembley. "We have to see [who will be fit for the final], but I said it before the game [against Luton] as long as we have 11 players we will go for it," Klopp said. "Will we be big favourites? Definitely not. "Since we [last] played them [Chelsea], they have improved a lot and it will be tricky. This was exceptional tonight." 2. The BBC is taking you behind the scenes at Mercedes and Williams as they prepare for the new Formula 1 season. In an eight-part series on BBC Sounds, F1: Back at Base gets rare access inside the factories in the build-up to the 2024 campaign, which starts next week in Bahrain. As well as charting the race to build a new car, the podcast team speak to seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton after he announces he is leaving Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025. Broadcaster Holly Samos also interviews Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and Hamilton's teammate George Russell just days after the news emerges. The podcast also has access to Williams drivers Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant throughout the winter. The main focus of the series, which follows the teams from November to February, is to reveal the work that goes on 'back at base'. "There is not really the right level of understanding and of what these days, weeks, months represent for the success of the season, for the teams," F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali tells the podcast. "This is not a moment where people are sleeping or recovering." Check out F1: Back at Base on BBC Sounds FULL STORY
  3. The Rugby Football Union considered selling Twickenham and buying a 50% share in Wembley, according to a document seen by the BBC. The Twickenham Stadium Masterplan Programme (TSMP) revealed that the RFU board discussed the proposal in March last year but no formal approach was made to the Football Association (FA). The RFU will instead focus on redeveloping Twickenham, which has been England's home ground since 1909. "Previous considerations looking at the viability of moving to alternative sites have been rejected," the RFU said in a statement. The TSMP said the RFU wanted it to focus on exploring the 'stay' option and "did not advance the 'leave' option whereby the RFU would explore the potential to dispose of Twickenham Stadium and purchase a 50% share of Wembley Stadium". England have played at Wembley twice - against Canada in 1992 and Wales in 1999. Renovation plans in the TSMP include reducing Twickenham's capacity from 82,000 to 80,000 to "improve spectator comfort", repairing the roof and improving transport connections. The work would be carried out between the end of the 2027 Six Nations and the start of the 2028 tournament. Costs of £663m quoted in the TSMP are for completing the whole plan, but it will not be undertaken in its entirety. The RFU said: "The RFU board has not agreed any new redevelopment plans. "Work will be undertaken over the next 12 months to consider next-stage designs and assess what interventions might take place and when within the existing stadium footprint over the next 10 years." 4. India v England, Fourth Test Venue: JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi Dates: 23-27 February Time: 04:00 GMT Coverage: Live text commentary on the BBC Sport website and app, with daily Test Match Special podcasts on BBC Sounds India have rested pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the fourth Test against England in Ranchi, starting on Friday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the decision was taken "keeping in mind the duration of the series and amount of cricket he has played in recent times". Bumrah, the world's number one-ranked men's Test bowler, is the only frontline pace bowler in either side to have played in all three Tests so far. India lead the five-Test series 2-1. 5. It is set to be the tightest Premier League title race in many years. Manchester City's 1-0 victory over Brentford on Tuesday evening lifted Pep Guardiola's champions above Arsenal into second place - one point behind leaders Liverpool - with 13 rounds of fixtures remaining. For the first time since 2015-16, when the third-placed Gunners were two points behind leaders Leicester after 26 games, the top three are separated by just two points. In fact, that gap at the top has only been as tight at this stage of a Premier League season on seven other occasions - and only four times this century. Erling Haaland's 22nd goal of the campaign means City's hopes of becoming the first team to lift the trophy four times in a row are very much still in their own hands - with a crucial match against Liverpool coming up in March at Anfield. "It's a long way [to go]," manager Pep Guardiola said afterwards. "There are still many games. Of course, it's better to win. We missed the opportunity against Chelsea [on Tuesday]. "I'm so proud of the team. We are closer but we are in the real part of the season. [We have] tough, tough games in this period. We are there." 6. Pep Guardiola warned Erling Haaland's critics "he will shut your mouth" after the prolific Norwegian boosted Manchester City's Premier League title hopes. Haaland's 71st-minute winner against Brentford moved City into second place in the table - just a point behind leaders Liverpool - as he emphatically responded to missing a host of chances in Saturday's draw with Chelsea. That Chelsea setback came just days after Haaland's grandmother died, and City manager Guardiola took the opportunity post-match to give his thoughts on recent critics - and journalists. "With top scorers or strikers who score a lot of goals, don't criticise because he will shut your mouth, that's for sure," said Guardiola. "Sooner or later, he is there. "Definitely, if I have to choose one [player to be running through on goal], I choose this one. "He was out with injury for two months and is not in his best shape and just had an incredibly tough week because he lost his grandmother. That is not easy for a human being." Guardiola, who said he never wanted to be a journalist, was asked what was wrong with being one and his response was immediate and cutting. "I am a manager," he said. "My life is better than yours." Guardiola also said Belgium playmaker Kevin de Bruyne has a hamstring issue, after already missing five months of the season. READ MORE

  10. Red Bull will be the focus of attention when Formula 1 pre-season testing starts this week in Bahrain - for reasons both on track and off. For one thing, the future of team principal Christian Horner is in doubt as a result of an internal investigation being conducted by Red Bull into allegations that the 50-year-old has engaged in inappropriate and controlling behaviour towards a female colleague. For another, the car Red Bull unveiled at the team's Milton Keynes base last Thursday was a bit of a "wow" moment, even if chief technical officer Adrian Newey insisted that he did not consider it to be any kind of enormous step forward. The 10 teams have just three days of testing to prepare for the start of the season and can run only one car at a time. So each driver should have no more than a day and a half to become acquainted with his new car in Bahrain. Two-time champion Fernando Alonso was bemoaning this at the launch of his Aston Martin car a week or so ago. The Spaniard called the paucity of running "unfair". Alonso is guaranteed to be at the centre of attention this season, given the vacancy at Mercedes next season following Lewis Hamilton's decision to switch to Ferrari. As Alonso put it: "There are three world champions on the grid and I am the only one available." But the driver market is a discussion for a little way down the road. Right now, even the stars without a seat for 2025 will be focused more on their new steeds than their futures. Normally, it is hard to divine a clear picture of relative performance from pre-season testing because of the variables of fuel loads, engine modes, track condition, tyres and so on. But last year, the fact that Red Bull's RB19 was in a league of its own was clear from pretty much its first serious run. READ MORE
  11. After every Premier League weekend, BBC football pundit Garth Crooks gathers his thoughts and gives you his Team of the Week. Here are this week's choices and, as ever, Garth also discusses the game's big talking points in the Crooks of the Matter. GOALKEEPERS Ederson (Manchester City): The Manchester City keeper has not made my team selection for some time. I'm not entirely sure if that says more about his defenders than it does about his own performance. However, the Brazilian had to be at his best during Saturday's 1-1 draw against Chelsea. City might have gone 2-0 down if it hadn't been for the brilliance of Ederson, who produced an excellent double save, with the first denying Raheem Sterling his second goal of the match. The defending champions may look back at this fixture at the end of the season as a defining moment. The title could hinge on the finest margins and Ederson's double save might prove to be the difference. DEFENDERS Nelson Semedo (Wolverhampton Wanderers): There were so many impressive performances for Wolves in their 2-1 win at Tottenham that I could have picked out any number of their players to be in my team. Nelson Semedo deserved a mention as he was outstanding. His ability to get forward, but also defend with equal measure, was impressive. He had a superb effort saved by Guglielmo Vicario when the rebound should have been converted by Hwang Hee-chan. He then produced the ball of the match in the second half for Pablo Sarabia, who should also have scored, and produced the block of the match to stop Dejan Kulusevski putting Spurs ahead. Playing with a back three seems to have transformed Wolves, allowing Semedo to cascade forward almost at will. Arguably Wolves' most improved player since his arrival. Lewis Dunk (Brighton & Hove Albion): It was Dunk's header across the face of the Sheffield United box that created Brighton's first goal and opened the floodgates as they won 5-0. Brighton were rampant, and clearly in no mood to repeat the performance they turned in against Luton Town, where they lost 4-0 to another team fighting relegation. Sheffield United admittedly weren't helped by Mason Holgate's early red card for his tackle on Kaoru Mitoma, but the defender got what he deserved. If players are behaving like this in matches, it will have been spotted in training and it needs to stop. 12. Everton manager Sean Dyche wants a "speedier" verdict for "the good of football" on their appeal against a 10-point deduction after they boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a late draw against Crystal Palace. Dyche spoke out after his side climbed out of the relegation zone with a point secured by Amadou Onana's 84th-minute header. The result took Everton up to 17th, above Luton on goal difference. They had 10 points deducted by an independent commission in November for financial rule breaches, but lodged an appeal the following month. No date for the appeal hearing has yet been confirmed. "I don't know the dates, we're just waiting. For the good of football, I think it needs to be speedier for everyone," Dyche said after the match. "I don't think anyone wants them dragged out, whatever it's going to be, let's get on with it. It's not in my hands, though. Who knows [when we'll find out]." Onan's headed equaliser came after Jordan Ayew had scored for Palace, who announced earlier on Monday that Roy Hodgson has stepped down as manager. Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner has replaced Hodgson, 76, who was taken ill during training on Thursday but is now out of hospital. Ghana forward Ayew thumped a superb strike into the far corner past home goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and looked to have sealed three points for Palace before Onana's late intervention. READ MORE
  13. Manchester United have made an official approach to Newcastle for their sporting director Dan Ashworth. The Red Devils have made Ashworth a key target as the Ineos Group look to revolutionise the club's structures. Earlier on Monday, Newcastle confirmed Ashworth had been placed on gardening leave after requesting his release. Manchester United believe they are in a strong negotiating position as Newcastle will have to pay the 52-year-old during his leave. However, Newcastle feel they are also in a strong position, given how keen Manchester United are to bring in the man widely acknowledged as one of football's most effective sporting directors. The Magpies have Ashworth under a contract that prevents him from working for anyone else into 2025 unless compensation is agreed. They believe they will be within their rights to ask Manchester United for a fee well in excess of £10m. The Old Trafford outfit, on the other hand, are determined they will not be forced to overpay. Darren Eales, Newcastle United's chief executive, said: "We are naturally disappointed that Dan has chosen to leave. However, our exciting journey doesn't stop and the process to recruit a new sporting director will begin immediately. "We thank Dan for his efforts at Newcastle United and we wish him and his family well for the future." Although Ashworth is highly regarded, there have been some suggestions from St James' Park he is at least partly responsible for the £55m signing of Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan in July. 20. Arsenal have made a stunning start to 2024 in the Premier League as they aim to win the title for the first time in 20 years. The Gunners are in blistering form, scoring 21 goals in their five league games during January and February. Mikel Arteta's side have recorded 5-0 wins over Crystal Palace and Burnley as well as beating Nottingham Forest 2-1. The two most impressive results in the run have been a 3-1 home win against title rivals Liverpool and a 6-0 away thrashing of West Ham. But what do the statistics tell us about Arsenal's record-breaking start to the calendar year? BBC Sport looks at the data. No proven striker, no problem On 5 January, Arteta said there was "a possibility" the Gunners may not sign any new players in the mid-season transfer window and so it proved, as the Spaniard showed faith in his current squad. Later in the same month, Arteta said: "We have to share goals, and we are responsible for everything." The Gunners were linked with Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen but when asked if he wanted a striker in January, Arteta added: "No, because I love the players that we have." Regular striker Gabriel Jesus has been injured for parts of the season, missing three games with a hamstring injury. He did feature in the first two games of Arsenal's current unbeaten run, scoring once and providing two assists, but has missed the last three with a knee injury. Arsenal's other attackers have stepped up in Jesus' absence with Arteta's side in red-hot form. One surprise regular scorer has been defender Gabriel, who is a constant threat from set-pieces and has netted three goals in recent weeks. READ MORE
  21. Guinness Six Nations: Ireland v Wales Venue: Aviva Stadium, Dublin Date: Saturday, 24 February Kick-off: 14:15 GMT Coverage: Watch live on S4C; listen on BBC Radio Wales & Radio Cymru; text commentary and match report on BBC Sport website and app Just 12 months ago Cardiff prop Keiron Assiratti was wondering whether he had any future in rugby. Now the Wales tight-head finds himself an important player in Warren Gatland's set-up going into the Six Nations trip to Ireland next Saturday. "It's a big change," said Assiratti. "This time 12 months ago, I didn't know what I was doing with my rugby. I didn't know what was going to happen last year. "Now, when I think about what could have been and what is happening, I'm glad I stuck at it. "I can say I'm doing quite well, so it's been a big turnaround." A year ago Assiratti was battling uncertainty over his future with financial issues over new contracts dominating the Welsh rugby landscape. Assiratti was struggling to be a regular regional starter and unsure whether he would be offered a new deal. "I wasn't playing at all in the first half of last season and it was frustrating," said Assiratti. "It was hard to keep going. I didn't know what I was going to do. I just had to play as well as I could and see what happened." READ MORE
  22. United Rugby Championship: Glasgow Warriors v Dragons Glasgow Warriors: (21) 40 Tries: McKay 2, McDowall 2, Afshar, Cordero Cons: Thompson 4, Weir Dragons: (0) 7 Tries: Reed Cons: O'Brien Two tries in the first three minutes set Glasgow Warriors on their way to a bonus-point victory over Dragons in the United Rugby Championship. Josh McKay raced over for the first try within 30 seconds and he was quickly followed by Stafford McDowall. Ben Afshar added the third on his first professional start after the break. Will Reed got the Welsh visitors on the scoreboard, but debutant Facundo Cordero and McDowall replied to secure a comfortable win. It moves the hosts up to second place in the URC table, with Dragons second from bottom. Reaction & as it happened Making a lightning start at Scotstoun, full-back McKay took a high ball on the 40-metre line, wriggled through some bodies and side-stepped two Dragons players to cross, with Ross Thompson adding the first of his four conversions. Franco Smith's side soon got their second try after hooker Jonny Matthews won the ball from the Dragons' line-out and centre McDowall charged through. Despite a scrappy first half, Glasgow put the game beyond doubt just before the interval when McDowall broke the lines and passed outside for McKay to cross. The bonus point was secured inside four minutes of the restart as Scotland Under-20 scrum-half Afshar kept up with play to take a pass and go over. Lock Matthew Screech touched down at the other end, but Dan Lydiate was penalised for obstruction and the try was disallowed on video evidence. Dragons eventually got some reward for sporadic spells of pressure when replacement full-back Reed wriggled over after taking a quick pass from Angus O'Brien, who added the conversion. That only served to spark a strong finish from the home side and a slick move ended with Duncan Weir playing a long pass out to the right wing for former Exeter Chiefs back Cordero to go over. 23. Mohamed Salah scored on his return from injury as Liverpool beat Brentford to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League. Darwin Nunez put Liverpool ahead with a superb chip before Alexis Mac Allister poked in a second at the Gtech Community Stadium. Salah, back from a hamstring problem sustained on Egypt duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, got on the scoresheet with a crisp finish. Ivan Toney pulled a goal back for Brentford, but Cody Gakpo added the gloss for Liverpool with a late strike. The victory temporarily sent Liverpool five points clear at the summit, but Arsenal's 5-0 victory over Burnley later in the day reduced the deficit to two points again. The only sour points for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp from the win at the Gtech Community Stadium were more additions to a lengthening injury list. Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were taken off before half-time, while Nunez was substituted at the interval. "We have to see how much it costs us - we don't know that yet," Klopp said of the injuries. "Curtis got a knock on the lower part of his shin, or above the ankle. We will see what that means. It was what he felt, but he was not 100 per cent sure. That Curtis cannot play on tells you that it must be something because he would have played on at all costs. "Diogo looks probably the worst; I didn't see it back but I heard the pictures didn't look great as well, so we have to see there. "Darwin, we took off because he felt really a little [something] but that was obviously today enough to immediately push the brake and that's what we did, so we took him off." READ MORE
  24. Rodri dramatically rescued a point with a late leveller for Manchester City to deny Chelsea victory and maintain his side's long unbeaten home record. City still lost ground in the title race after seeing Liverpool and Arsenal both post emphatic wins earlier on Saturday, but this has to go down as a point gained given how close they came to defeat. Raheem Sterling gave Chelsea the lead against his old team just before half-time, finishing off a brilliant counter-attack by meeting Nicolas Jackson's cross, cutting inside Kyle Walker and curling his shot home. The visitors looked threatening on the break all game, with Jackson earlier spurning an even better chance from Malo Gusto's cross when a heavy touch allowed Ederson to smother his shot, and City's keeper also denied Sterling a second from point-blank range. City were racking up the chances too, but seemed unable to take any of them, or even seriously test Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic despite piling on the pressure in the second half. Erling Haaland was the main culprit, with his worst miss coming when he somehow headed wide from a delicious Kevin de Bruyne cross. The defending champions were facing their first home league defeat since November 2022, until Rodri struck with seven minutes to go. After Walker's shot was deflected into his path on the edge of the box, Rodri fired in a ferocious first-time strike that was going in anyway but took a touch off Chelsea substitute Trevoh Chalobah on its way into the net. The draw sees City drop to third in the table, four points behind leaders Liverpool but with a game in hand - they can close the gap, and leapfrog second-placed Arsenal, if they beat Brentford here on Tuesday. 25. Bought a bike, 300cc, had some fun with my new toy for a few months BUT my main problem was the heat ! Full face helmet and Thai sun for more than about 30 minutes or so and I was really uncomfortable. Used for awhile longer and "scratched my itch" as I had always wanted a bike but now it sits under a cover and is looking for a new home as I just feel its time to stop before I'm stopped as we dont bounce well at 65+. That decision was compounded by the sad loss of Kwasaki on this forum who died on his bike and the rear-ended smash Bitmantoo encountered through no fault of his own.
