  5. Arsenal have made a stunning start to 2024 in the Premier League as they aim to win the title for the first time in 20 years. The Gunners are in blistering form, scoring 21 goals in their five league games during January and February. Mikel Arteta's side have recorded 5-0 wins over Crystal Palace and Burnley as well as beating Nottingham Forest 2-1. The two most impressive results in the run have been a 3-1 home win against title rivals Liverpool and a 6-0 away thrashing of West Ham. But what do the statistics tell us about Arsenal's record-breaking start to the calendar year? BBC Sport looks at the data. No proven striker, no problem On 5 January, Arteta said there was "a possibility" the Gunners may not sign any new players in the mid-season transfer window and so it proved, as the Spaniard showed faith in his current squad. Later in the same month, Arteta said: "We have to share goals, and we are responsible for everything." The Gunners were linked with Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen but when asked if he wanted a striker in January, Arteta added: "No, because I love the players that we have." Regular striker Gabriel Jesus has been injured for parts of the season, missing three games with a hamstring injury. He did feature in the first two games of Arsenal's current unbeaten run, scoring once and providing two assists, but has missed the last three with a knee injury. Arsenal's other attackers have stepped up in Jesus' absence with Arteta's side in red-hot form. One surprise regular scorer has been defender Gabriel, who is a constant threat from set-pieces and has netted three goals in recent weeks. READ MORE
  6. Guinness Six Nations: Ireland v Wales Venue: Aviva Stadium, Dublin Date: Saturday, 24 February Kick-off: 14:15 GMT Coverage: Watch live on S4C; listen on BBC Radio Wales & Radio Cymru; text commentary and match report on BBC Sport website and app Just 12 months ago Cardiff prop Keiron Assiratti was wondering whether he had any future in rugby. Now the Wales tight-head finds himself an important player in Warren Gatland's set-up going into the Six Nations trip to Ireland next Saturday. "It's a big change," said Assiratti. "This time 12 months ago, I didn't know what I was doing with my rugby. I didn't know what was going to happen last year. "Now, when I think about what could have been and what is happening, I'm glad I stuck at it. "I can say I'm doing quite well, so it's been a big turnaround." A year ago Assiratti was battling uncertainty over his future with financial issues over new contracts dominating the Welsh rugby landscape. Assiratti was struggling to be a regular regional starter and unsure whether he would be offered a new deal. "I wasn't playing at all in the first half of last season and it was frustrating," said Assiratti. "It was hard to keep going. I didn't know what I was going to do. I just had to play as well as I could and see what happened." READ MORE
  7. United Rugby Championship: Glasgow Warriors v Dragons Glasgow Warriors: (21) 40 Tries: McKay 2, McDowall 2, Afshar, Cordero Cons: Thompson 4, Weir Dragons: (0) 7 Tries: Reed Cons: O'Brien Two tries in the first three minutes set Glasgow Warriors on their way to a bonus-point victory over Dragons in the United Rugby Championship. Josh McKay raced over for the first try within 30 seconds and he was quickly followed by Stafford McDowall. Ben Afshar added the third on his first professional start after the break. Will Reed got the Welsh visitors on the scoreboard, but debutant Facundo Cordero and McDowall replied to secure a comfortable win. It moves the hosts up to second place in the URC table, with Dragons second from bottom. Reaction & as it happened Making a lightning start at Scotstoun, full-back McKay took a high ball on the 40-metre line, wriggled through some bodies and side-stepped two Dragons players to cross, with Ross Thompson adding the first of his four conversions. Franco Smith's side soon got their second try after hooker Jonny Matthews won the ball from the Dragons' line-out and centre McDowall charged through. Despite a scrappy first half, Glasgow put the game beyond doubt just before the interval when McDowall broke the lines and passed outside for McKay to cross. The bonus point was secured inside four minutes of the restart as Scotland Under-20 scrum-half Afshar kept up with play to take a pass and go over. Lock Matthew Screech touched down at the other end, but Dan Lydiate was penalised for obstruction and the try was disallowed on video evidence. Dragons eventually got some reward for sporadic spells of pressure when replacement full-back Reed wriggled over after taking a quick pass from Angus O'Brien, who added the conversion. That only served to spark a strong finish from the home side and a slick move ended with Duncan Weir playing a long pass out to the right wing for former Exeter Chiefs back Cordero to go over. 8. Mohamed Salah scored on his return from injury as Liverpool beat Brentford to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League. Darwin Nunez put Liverpool ahead with a superb chip before Alexis Mac Allister poked in a second at the Gtech Community Stadium. Salah, back from a hamstring problem sustained on Egypt duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, got on the scoresheet with a crisp finish. Ivan Toney pulled a goal back for Brentford, but Cody Gakpo added the gloss for Liverpool with a late strike. The victory temporarily sent Liverpool five points clear at the summit, but Arsenal's 5-0 victory over Burnley later in the day reduced the deficit to two points again. The only sour points for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp from the win at the Gtech Community Stadium were more additions to a lengthening injury list. Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were taken off before half-time, while Nunez was substituted at the interval. "We have to see how much it costs us - we don't know that yet," Klopp said of the injuries. "Curtis got a knock on the lower part of his shin, or above the ankle. We will see what that means. It was what he felt, but he was not 100 per cent sure. That Curtis cannot play on tells you that it must be something because he would have played on at all costs. "Diogo looks probably the worst; I didn't see it back but I heard the pictures didn't look great as well, so we have to see there. "Darwin, we took off because he felt really a little [something] but that was obviously today enough to immediately push the brake and that's what we did, so we took him off." READ MORE
  9. Rodri dramatically rescued a point with a late leveller for Manchester City to deny Chelsea victory and maintain his side's long unbeaten home record. City still lost ground in the title race after seeing Liverpool and Arsenal both post emphatic wins earlier on Saturday, but this has to go down as a point gained given how close they came to defeat. Raheem Sterling gave Chelsea the lead against his old team just before half-time, finishing off a brilliant counter-attack by meeting Nicolas Jackson's cross, cutting inside Kyle Walker and curling his shot home. The visitors looked threatening on the break all game, with Jackson earlier spurning an even better chance from Malo Gusto's cross when a heavy touch allowed Ederson to smother his shot, and City's keeper also denied Sterling a second from point-blank range. City were racking up the chances too, but seemed unable to take any of them, or even seriously test Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic despite piling on the pressure in the second half. Erling Haaland was the main culprit, with his worst miss coming when he somehow headed wide from a delicious Kevin de Bruyne cross. The defending champions were facing their first home league defeat since November 2022, until Rodri struck with seven minutes to go. After Walker's shot was deflected into his path on the edge of the box, Rodri fired in a ferocious first-time strike that was going in anyway but took a touch off Chelsea substitute Trevoh Chalobah on its way into the net. The draw sees City drop to third in the table, four points behind leaders Liverpool but with a game in hand - they can close the gap, and leapfrog second-placed Arsenal, if they beat Brentford here on Tuesday. 10. Bought a bike, 300cc, had some fun with my new toy for a few months BUT my main problem was the heat ! Full face helmet and Thai sun for more than about 30 minutes or so and I was really uncomfortable. Used for awhile longer and "scratched my itch" as I had always wanted a bike but now it sits under a cover and is looking for a new home as I just feel its time to stop before I'm stopped as we dont bounce well at 65+. That decision was compounded by the sad loss of Kwasaki on this forum who died on his bike and the rear-ended smash Bitmantoo encountered through no fault of his own.

  21. Tiger Woods marked his return to the PGA Tour with a one-over-par 72 at the Genesis Invitational on Thursday. The 15-time major champion, who underwent ankle surgery in April 2023, was playing his first round of an official PGA Tour event since the Masters 10 months ago. Woods was tied for 55th when his round concluded, with only the top 50 players making the cut after 36 holes. He is eight strokes behind leader Patrick Cantlay on seven-under 64. Latest Genesis Invitational leaderboard Former world number one Woods carded five birdies and five bogeys, ending the first day in California with a bogey after firing a surprise shank far to the right on the 18th fairway. "Oh, definitely, I shanked it," said Woods. "My back was spasming the last couple holes and it was locking up," he explained, adding he would receive treatment to be ready for the second round. "But that's just part of the deal, and I look forward to the challenge." Woods' last win on the PGA Tour was at the 2019 Zozo Championship in Japan, which saw him equal Sam Snead's record of 82 Tour victories. His schedule has been limited since injuring his leg in a car crash in 2021. READ MORE
  22. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's deal to buy a 25% stake in Manchester United has been approved by the Football Association and Premier League. The British billionaire's purchase is worth about $1.3bn (£1.03bn). Owners the Glazer family will retain a majority stake in the club but Ratcliffe's Ineos Group will take control of football operations. The sale cannot be completed until after the share offer is closed, which is Friday night in the United States. Premier League approval is contingent on the deal being completed. "The Premier League now awaits confirmation of the transaction's completion," the league said in a statement, while confirming Ratcliffe, 71, has also signed its owners' charter. The deal is the first to be agreed under the Premier League's updated owners' and directors' test, which was approved by member clubs in March 2023 and includes a review by an independent oversight panel. "The FA can confirm that the Barclays Women's Super League and Barclays Women's Championship Board have approved the acquisition by Sir Jim Ratcliffe of Manchester United Football Club in relation to its Manchester United Women's entity," the FA said in a statement. Who is Sir Jim Ratcliffe? What will 'marginal gains' guru Brailsford bring to Man Utd? Ratcliffe's deal was agreed on Christmas Eve and also includes $300m (£236m) for future investment in the club's Old Trafford stadium. The businessman has agreed to buy 25% of the club's class B shares, largely held by the Glazer family, who own 69% of the club, and contain almost all the voting rights, and up to 25% of its class A shares, which are listed on the New York Stock Market. The shares are worth $33 each. An update to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday evening confirmed that the deadline for holders of class A shares to tender them for sale has been extended from Wednesday until 23:59 EST on Friday. So far 36.7% of class A shares have been tendered, already above the 25% Ratcliffe has agreed to buy. Taking on sporting control at the club means Ineos will oversee the men's and women's football operations and academies. They will also get two seats on the Manchester United PLC and Manchester United Football Club boards. READ MORE

  24. India v England, Third Test Venue: Rajkot Dates: 15-19 February Time: 04:00 GMT Coverage: Live text commentary on the BBC Sport website and app, with daily Test Match Special podcasts on BBC Sounds Ben Stokes is right again. He doesn't get much wrong these days. The England skipper will win his 100th cap in the third Test against India in Rajkot starting on Thursday. He says it is just a number, and it is, albeit another number in a career of astonishing numbers. This is the man with more Test runs for England than Denis Compton, Michael Vaughan and Jack Hobbs. More wickets than Jim Laker, Sydney Barnes and Angus Fraser. If his knee allows him to take three more wickets, he will become only the third man to do the double of 6,000 Test runs and 200 wickets. The other two? Jacques Kallis and Sir Garfield Sobers. Mount Rushmore cricketers. Stokes' 128 sixes in Test cricket already has daylight between him and anyone else to have played the game. By the time he is done, he could have a record that will never be broken. Wood back as England pick two seamers for third Test Reaching 100 Tests 'just a number', says Stokes But looking at Stokes through the prism of numbers alone is like saying the Rolling Stones just play musical instruments. There have been better cricketers to play for England, plenty with stronger statistics, others more famous and maybe a handful who were more influential. There are hardly any who have had the presence of Stokes, with the ability to carry an entire nation on his back, not just as an all-rounder but as a captain too. Red hair, tattoos and puffed-out chest, poking the eye of fear and giving the impression that everything will be OK, no matter the odds. The signs were there, right at the start, when Stokes came into a once-great England team that were falling apart. The 2013-14 Ashes tour was an awful episode in the history of English cricket, but it gave birth to the legend of Stokes, who made his debut in the second Test in Adelaide. FULL STORY
