  8. In the end it again proved a step too far for Wales' new-look young side. For all the endeavour and shoots of optimism highlighted by head coach Warren Gatland, victory again eluded Wales at Twickenham. They might be youthful, but this Gatland class of 2024 are quickly learning the harsh realities of international rugby, with Wales now having lost nine of their past 10 Six Nations matches. In this year's tournament, there have been two defeats from two, by a combined total of only three points, in games against Scotland and England. That will hurt, especially as both were matches Wales could have won. It might be a new era but the old Twickenham hang-ups remain. This was an eighth successive defeat at England's home against the Red Rose side since 2015. Wales had lived up to their reputation as slow starters as they conceded 27 points against Scotland in 43 minutes, before battling back to lose by a point. But Wales bucked the trend at Twickenham, where they led at half-time in this tournament for the first time since 1980. Yet a 14-5 advantage was overhauled, with Wales scoring no points in the second half and conceding 11. An inexperienced side just lacked the composure to seal victory. 11. After beating Premier League leaders Liverpool and creating plenty of debate over their celebrations, it was important Arsenal backed it up with another win on Sunday against West Ham. They did just that in emphatic fashion. The ruthless Gunners put six goals without reply past a stunned Hammers that led to many of the home fans departing at half-time, and will no doubt have made their title rivals sit up and take notice. "This was a massive result," former Arsenal forward Paul Merson said on Sky Sports. "If this was Manchester City we would be waxing lyrical. "Arsenal don't get the credit they deserve. If you want to win the Premier League you have to bounce back quickly and they have done that. "They are right in this title race now." Former Manchester City midfielder Michael Brown added on BBC Radio 5 Live: "With the run of games they have, it's fantastic what Arsenal have made happen. "You would expect them to continue to build on this and the longer this continues, the more the confidence builds." FULL STORY
  12. Legendary former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane is convinced a top-four finish is in sight, while manager Erik ten Hag has growing belief. In points terms, United may only be three closer to the coveted top four following their win at Aston Villa on Sunday than they were after losing at Nottingham Forest on 30 December. But the optics are with them. Three Premier League victories in a row, including late winners at Wolves and now Villa Park after Scott McTominay settled a game United could easily have lost. Four successive triumphs in all competitions for the first time this season and winnable matches against Luton and Fulham to come. This latest win leaves them just six points off fourth-placed Spurs and a point nearer Aston Villa in fifth, which could even be enough to seal Champions League football next season with the two most successful countries in Europe securing an extra spot in next year's revamped competition. Keane is happy to turn the spotlight on the sides United are trying to chase down. "They have the momentum," the Irishman told Sky Sports. "The teams ahead of them - especially Aston Villa and Tottenham - will be worried. They are hunting them down." Former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville added: "Man Utd could have been out of it today but they now within touching distance." Ten Hag does not do hyperbole. But he does do blunt analysis. "We put ourselves in this situation and we have to catch up," he said. "We can beat any opponent away or home but sometimes away we have to believe it more. "We could have won in Arsenal, we deserved to win there, and we could have won in Liverpool, it is about belief and this team today believed we could win." FULL STORY

  16. Middleweight Hamzah Sheeraz defeated Liam Williams in one round in an unstoppable performance in London. The Briton extended his unbeaten record to 19 fights, dropping Williams twice thanks to his blistering speed. Sheeraz, 24, delivered on a promise to make a statement by stopping Williams, a former world title challenger. "I had a lot of doubters going into this fight [who] thought I wasn't able to keep up with this calibre of fighter," Sheeraz said. "I do my talking in the ring. When I get in here, I entertain." Williams had cut a confident figure all through fight week, suggesting Sheeraz's team had made a serious mistake in accepting the bout, but that bravado was quickly wiped out. Sheeraz's stiff jab and power shots were too much for the Welshman, who went down just after the first minute and crashed to the floor again moments later from a brilliant counter uppercut. Promoter Frank Warren celebrated with Sheeraz at ringside as one of his brightest young stars produced a career-best performance against his most dangerous opponent to date. Warren suggested fellow Englishman Chris Eubank Jr as Sheeraz's next opponent, heaping praise on his fighter. "He reminds me of Tommy Hearns in a big way with that jab. He takes you out with it. The power he has with it is unbelievable," Warren said. "I genuinely believe a star is born and I genuinely believe he will win a world title and hold that title for as long as he likes." FULL STORY
  17. We didn't know it at the time but it turns out Scotland's nerve-shredding endgame at the Principality last weekend was a mere warm-up routine for the jaw-dropping uncertainty of the final minutes at Murrayfield. "Rugby, bloody hell," as a great Scotsman never said. Time passed slowly in those closing minutes. Not a ball was kicked, not a pass made, not a ruck hit. The clock was red. The score was 20-16 to France. Every last person in the stadium had eyes fixed not on the players on the pitch but on the replays on the TV screens. Had Scotland scored a match-winning try in the last play or not? Had Sam Skinner got the ball down on the tryline to steal it? No, said referee Nic Berry. Possibly, said TMO Brian MacNeice. It played out for what felt like an age at the end of a game that felt everlasting at times. Amid the fug of confusion, MacNeice pulled up replay after replay for Berry to look at and - eureka! - appeared to be leading Berry in the direction of try. Is that the ball on a French boot? Yes. But does the ball now touch the ground? Yes, again. "Clearly," said Gregor Townsend, who was celebrating victory, along with a stadium in raptures, when MacNeice started to moonwalk his way back from his original thought process, a change of mind that Berry now agreed with. No try. Try. No try. Game over. Late TMO call denies Scotland as France hold on Listen: BBC Radio Scotland Rugby Podcast FULL STORY
  18. Super Bowl 58: San Francisco 49ers v Kansas City Chiefs Venue: Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas Date: Sunday, 11 February Start: 23:30 GMT (15:30 PST) BBC coverage: Listen to commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live and follow live text on the BBC Sport website and app We have a superb Super Bowl 58 match-up with the San Francisco 49ers facing the Kansas City Chiefs, but who will hit the jackpot in Las Vegas? These games are decided on small margins - big plays here and there, and moments of magic proving the difference between the ultimate glory of lifting the Lombardi Trophy and the desperate despair of trudging off that confetti-laden field, knowing you have come so near yet remain so far. So will Brock Purdy play better than Patrick Mahomes? Can the Chiefs defence somehow slow down Christian McCaffrey, and which other players, tactics or coaching titbits do you need to watch out for during the big game? Let's take a look.. Their defence and running game continues to dominate, as despite having a generational talent in star quarterback Mahomes, those are the two big things that have got the defending champions back to the Super Bowl. Isiah Pacheco runs the ball as hard as anyone and, defensively, the most points they have allowed in a game all season is 27 - restricting Lamar Jackson, who was this week named the season's Most Valuable Player, and his Baltimore Ravens team to just 10 at home in the AFC Championship game proved they are an elite group. Their defence has kept them in games all season while the receivers struggled to catch passes, leaving Mahomes to sprinkle his magic when needed. So the final piece of the plan is keeping him upright and keeping San Francisco's disruptive defender Nick Bosa at arm's length.
