  1. Thanks Jaimaai, I hadn't noticed that command for slmgr before.

Yes, says expires 26 August so I guess I was wrong not to do a clean install.

Looked at a few other pages and the "partial product key" is not correct - or at least  not the one I bought and entered. Problem is I have done a re-install since so that might be my potential problem. I'll have a think before changing the product key again.

KneeDeep - yes no problems with command prompt - I go back to before DOS was used! Any suggestion would be welcome.

  2. I had an version of Windows 10 Pro installed that was activated by something that finally failed with repeated notices from MS about illegal copy.

I bought a key for £1.99 from ebay, went to setup in Windows 10, update and security, activate and put the number in - a few moments later it came back activated. That was in November last year, 4 months ago.

BUT I now see that activation shows "Windows is activated using your organisation's activation service" and I wonder if after 6 months it will need to check in to re-confirm the activation as it does with an illegal copy.

2 months to go to find out.

  3. CMBob -

    Just done a re-entry. No TM30 required.

Slight clarification, if you have just done your extension you need your current extension page and the new one you have just obtained.

ie the one up to 2019 and the one valid until 2020

The news may not all be good, though, unfortunately.

If you married your wife in the UK then you will first need to get your marriage certificate formally legalised as a prerequisite to her piggy-backing on to your retirement extension on dependency grounds. This will entail a convoluted bureaucratic process which will become apparent to you as you follow the step-by-step guide in the link below:-

    https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised

Interesting - the couple of times I have had to do this I went to the UK embassy/consulate and they stamped and signed a copy of my marriage certificate (or is it a licence, I forget.)

  5. I've just put an SSD into my portable, to hold the OS with the original disc put into a caddy replacing the DVD drive.

I bought a Goldenfir from the manufacturer's website on AliExpress, US$18 (600 Baht) for 128Gb. Seriously cheap.

I looked at SSD speeds, the SATA3 interface is a maximum of 750MB/s, but with overheads you are going to be lucky to get 600MB/s - so I felt 550MB/s was going to be OK. Most SSDs claimed to be that good.

I tested the Goldenfir on arrival - and got a result of 565MB/s, quite satisfactory.

So is it worth going for more expensive brand names? Of course I do not know how long it will last .............................

One person has done a tear down review on YouTube that is worth watching. Not sure if the link is allowed but if it is:

Oh, maybe OK since it has been embedded.

  6. AFAIK you get the pension increase from the day you step into the UK, but it is only temporary whilst in the UK.

If you stay 6 months then the increase is locked in, ie you continue on the new, increased rate even if you return to Thailand.

  7. KhunHeineken,

Windows Pro has some extra bits I find useful, but not everyone needs the extra. Think networking options was the biggest point for me. But since a pro licence is the same as a home licence why not go for the extra?

Except, you can still upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 (home to home or pro to pro only) free despite what Microsoft say and no need for a clean install.

You can download Windows 10 from microsoft direct, no need for a DVD or pirate stuff.

  8. I have a Thai Windows 10 pro that is now complaining it wants to be activated. Previous hacks don't seem to work.

I looked at Ebay and the activation keys cost under 84 Baht (well under £2) but they all say:

    "How to use

The key must only be used with a fresh install of Windows 10 pro this is not a upgrade from home to pro and only works as a new install"

Any expert know if this means I have to start from scratch with a new install and reinstall my programs etc or can I just activate my current setup?

  9. Don't every try to understand airfares - it'll just give you a headache.

    Last year

business Manchester to Bangkok one way £3500

Return £2,500 business to Bangkok and then add £200 for the return by economy plus £75 refund when I cancelled the return sector.

    Nothing new.

In 1999 Return Dubai to Manchester cheaper than the single.

In the 1970's Jo'berg to New York with a stopover in London cheaper than Jo'berg to London.

  10. What about the low cost laser printers, brother have one at around 1,800 Baht. Cartridges seem to have a 1000 page life and a refill is some 300 Baht. So print 2,000 pages at 1 Baht a page.

The advantage I find of laser printers is the ink does not dry up and clog the head especially if the printer is not used for a few months.

Disadvantage, no colour, but then 99% of all my printing is black and white - well not the white bit.
