  1. Dream Tv from the philipines is still available.

Feel  free to gamble on it since sooner or later they will upgrade ther encoding system as well.

On the other hand, buy the equipment, try to watch for free as long as it lasts, and afterwards you can still get genuine subscriptions for a lot less then UBC charges!

Astro is a little less then 1000 Baht/month, Dream 750Baht/month.

Not sure you can get Dream cards over here though!

PSI as well as www.satthai.net can arrange the astro cards.

    Euro_Pean,

You might want to invest in either an atlanta 5400 (at 7500 Baht) or an XSAT CDTV (at 5900 Baht)

For both receivers is modified firmware available which allows you to enter seca2 keys with your remote. Both ZeeTV and Astro are on seca2(also called mediaguard2).

    Astro since september...

Keys freely available on the net  :o

I contacted satthai.net and they say there is no reciever that can give you free astro. the codes on their site are old, and are not a hack for the new encryption.

  2. Pratunam selection is huge but I have found their clothes generally don't fit my western size (ahem) assets.  :o  Either buy your clothes at a large department store or wait till you go home (which is what I do). I am hardly a large girl but found that the clothes I like are made for women with no hips or breasts. Since I  am not much bigger than alot of Thai women and alot smaller than quite a few I wonder where those "larger" girls go.

As for men's clothes, well, I don't know what the bigger guys do. My husband is hardly large (although for a Thai guy he is a good size) and he ends up buying XL stuff here whereas in the US he wouldn't be bigger than a medium. What do 6 foot and over guys do for clothes? Get them made?

For really big people, there's a couple of stalls on the top floor of the mbk that sell XXXXL sizes, but it's mostly t-shirts. not sure if they do trousers.

  3. Am a 12 to 14 Australian size and i wonder if i will find clothes in bangkok to fit as the Thais are all so small.

Had a friend go to Penang and buy heaps...will i be as lucky? If so, where?

    Thanks.

Pratunam market is the place to go for women's clothes, so the wife tells me.

Have they hack the new encryption for astro already ? If so, can i buy a decoder/card for my psi sat box (DP303) to recieve it ?

  5. Thanks for the tip on Look Maew.

Is that 3rd fl UK or 3rd fl Thai? :o

It's 3rd floor (Thai). It's just past the cosmetic counters.

Do they have a very extensive collection that you can order from, or is it just one or two series?

    Thanks .. :D

What are you after ? they do a lot of arthouse(non-hollywood) movies from europe, korea, japan. They do do some british stuff, but i don't think it's that extensive. I haven't been up there for a while - should go check it for yourself.

  6. I am at present looking at a few properties in Hua Hin and was wondering what the best way is to buy and own the property. I have been told that opening a business will be the easiest way. What implications does this have as it involves having Thai partners.

If you buy a condo, you can do it in your name because it requires no purchase of land. Foreigners cannot own land in Thailand, with one exception, if you purchase 1 rai of land at a cost of 40 million baht, which probably does not apply to most property purchases. There are a number of ways to get around this, but my lawyer says that these are the most common methods used

    1) purchase the land in a Thai national's name (usually wife) and have her lease the land to you, or have a mortgage registered at the land dept.

    2) setup a thai company

    Thanks for the reply.

What is involved with setting up a Thai company, and what legal rights do the partners have in the company. What would happen if i decided to sell the house at a later date.

My lawyer says that the company would have to have the majority shares owned by thai nationals i.e 51% plus, but you can remain in control of the company, even if you have minority shares, by being the director of the company. I guess, you would then be able to sell the property when you please, but it's best to check with a lawyer yourself, especially about the rights of the partners - good luck !!

  8. and we will arrange the technician to service you.

hmmm...was considering getting UBC but don't like the idea of being serviced by one of their technicians :o

All depends on if the technician is a pretty woman or not, and if the service involved oil and some gentle rubbing.

UBC is a rip-ff - get PSI satellite ! No subscription and premiership football every weekend !!!

UBC might be a rip off at the price they charge, but at least you know what you are paying for up front. Sky in UK started off for free, then added one pay film channel, then charged for every channel, then charged extra for special films or Football matches, now for football all you get for your subscription is one or two matches a week. The rest you must pay extra for. Same with films. For your subscription fee you get all the old films to see an up-to-date film again you must pay another charge. That's a rip off

I agree with you that sky is a rip-off. But sky only had free programming at the start to get people to buy the equipment. It was obvious that once they had enough people with the satellite equipment, they would start to charge. Psi in thailand is pointed at about 10 satellites, with about 300 free channels, so there will always free channels available - it's just that the channels will change, sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worst. Also, in the future, UBC will undoubtedly offer pay-per-view and you'll find that much of what you are watching now, is no longer free.

  9. I think it depends a lot on your circumstances and your life style: IF you come here to retire and live the retired expat life, you can do quite nicely with only knowing some basic thai e.g greetings, numbers etc, especially if you have a thai partner/wife. But, if you are here to work or start a business, i would say it is extremely useful, as it allows you to network and get contacts.

  10. Mmm,Interesting;

I used to own a website called www.s#x-tours.com

Simple name, simple concept. In those days, the internet was a perfect outlet. Anyway, one thing led to another, and I approached a number of these agencies to get interested ladies if the gents wanted a "long term and loving relationship"

Before you flame me, now I am not proud of that business, although it did rake in some good $$$ for a while.

Now I never had a problem with the boys in brown, but I did get a few emails from them, after I approached the "Matchmaking" agencies. Even at that point they knew what I was doing, and they warned me about some (more than 5) of the agencies, I was trying to engage for business.

So, I would say be careful, and most of all before you part with money, get some customer references. If they won't provide customer references - walk on.

    good luck.

BTW, I am playing with the idea of this myself, only problem I have is screening the men, I have an endless supply if interested women.

Can anyone suggest how to screen the men ???

    :o

I would say the only way you could do some screening is if you had an office in the western country, but that would be a lot of extra cost.

  11. A one year multi entry non immigrant visa is available from Hull for the purpose of visiting friends

But doesn't the friends have to be thai nationals - he can't just invent some friends because surely they will ask to see i.d cards, as in the case of getting a visa on the basis of marriage. And i thought the non 'o' visa was for visiting family, not friends ? if you did indeed get a visa for visiting friends, as already mentioned, you cannot rely on the generosity of consulates forever.

  12. I am not sure why, but people accused of crimes in Thailand seem to confess quite readily. Does it have something to do with the Buddhist culture or are the police more convincing when they tell the persons in custody that they will feel better by coming 'clean'?

From my experience in America very few people who are charged with serious crimes say "I did it!" as soon as the finger is pointed in their direction. And, I expect that there are not too many Brits who when first brought, cap in hand, before the Old Bailey mutter "It's a fair cop!".

But, here in Bangkok the newspapers are full of quickly solved crimes. And, this is usually accompanied by a photograph of the defendant looking all contrite and sorry; in many cases he or she is even shown reenacting the crime for the benefit of the press....or, at least sitting all glum-like staring at a table piled high with illegal drug evidence.

Or, and this is likely, my impressions are just off base. Maybe I am reading the wrong papers...or reading them wrong.

It's probably because they take a right old beating by the police, if they don't confess. And get a higher sentence when found guity.

  13. I hope to have adsl up and running next week, but I am not sure where to fit the adsl splitter.

The house has one line in, but that already splits to every room in the house.

I only want to use the computer in one room.

    A.  Should I put the splitter on the socket in the room with the computer.

B    Split the line as soon as it enters the house

I read that the splitter provides a termination the line and makes for better data transmission,

therefore my guess is B is the better option.

    Any advice welcome

    Thanks

I'm in the same situation as you. You need to put the splitter in the room with the computer. If you have additional telephones around the house, you need to buy additional splitters at each telephone. Apparently, you can do it with one splitter, but that would mean you would have to have the splitter outside, before the line into your house, and then have a long cable to your computer. I decided to buy additional splitters.

  14. Yes.  From a Consulate outside Thailand.  Will normally require a day wait and pay fee.  30 day stay stamp is just a border crossing (plus visa if required) and no fee.  If you have funds and only do two times the 30 day stamp should not be a problem (but of course that could change in another year).

Does this mean you think the thai authorities will stop people doing the '30-day stamp run' consecutively ?
