  1. Hi. A few years ago I watched a great thai movie, (on SBS in Sydney). But I can't remember the title and cannot find it on the net anywhere.

It invloved a boy whose mother died giving birth to him. His father despised him because of this, and treated him badly. The dad had many lovers, and gradually the boy grew up and started having affairs with his father's mistresses etc.

It was a fairly new movie, in Thai with substitles.

    Does anyone recognise this description?

    Thanks.

It's called 'Jan dara' - check out http://www.dvdasian.com

  2. Alright, I've been hearing again how westerners suffer the stereotype of being walking wallets, degenerate bargirl chasers, etc, etc. Thats more of less a view of all forgieners in general by some Thais, and even many forgieners.

What we don't hear as much is how you get stereotyped by your individual nationality in addition to just being a 'falung'. Try as I might to flush these stereotypes out of my head, I still can't shake them. I won't elaborate on any of them, but I'll tell you some of the ones I put up with.

    Canadians can assume people think:

    - We're Americans.  (I've been called much worse...it's just the principle)

    - It snows all year back home.

    - We all speak French.

    - We have trouble with bears coming into the backyard. :D

    - We're Americans.

    - We know all the rules of hockey.

    - We can answer any questions they have regarding moose.  :D

    - We all love Celine Dion.  :o

    - We're Americans.

    - We are always in need of a beer. (Ok, that one may have a kernal of truth)

Okay, Pommies, Yanks, Fritzes, etc...... what do you deal with in particular?  :D

    cv

I once heard on a train an American saying: 'All Canadians are wanna be Americans' - insulting or what !

  3. Thanks to both of you. As it's Xmas I'm going to treat myself to a dish. The info you've posted will help me reach a decision.

One question however, why do memebers of this forum use the quote function when their comment directly refers to the last post. It seems totally unnecessary.

BTW- A 10-foot dish (assuming that's the diameter) seems v.big.

You need a big dish because the satellites are over other countries, so the signal is weaker in Thailand, but 10ft is a bit excessive - 7.5/8ft is enough.

Why i use the quote ?

I have no idea, i just followed everybody else and it looks pretty on the screen. I guess it does help you track your particular line of conversation, especially when there are many people inputting.

  4. Thanks for the info Zovox. When the missus gets home I'll ask her to check out the website.

I've heard people in the south can pick up Malaysian satellite signals using an Astra dish. I gather the initial cost is 10-14,000 baht, but after that it's subscription free. The channels include most of the UBC package including Star World, Star Movies, HBO, ESPN, Star Sports...etc. I'll try and get some contact details and post them here.

If anybody tries to sell you astro, DON'T get it !! because they're trying to dump there old equipment on you. Astro recently changed their encryption, rendering all current pirate decoders/sat boxes useless. That's why a lot of hotels and apartments no longer offer satellite channels because they were using pirate sat boxes.

If you wait about a year, there may be new equipment with a new hack for the new encryption, but the new encryption astro are using is very good, so i wouldn't hold your breath.

ASTRO is still available but now you have to pay.The packages start from Baht11,800.

I have all the news channels, sports channels along with Nat Geo,Discovery along with a host of free Malay Channels.

One can also try John Clarke @ http://www.jsat.tv

Where did you get your decoder and card for ASTRO? Did you get from jsat ?Astro themselves only issue cards and decoders if you have a Malaysian address.

I got mine from Psisat and they organise the card from Malaysia. It's an official card and PsiSat offer the decoders also.

    Jsat is another company.

How much monthly/yearly subscription are you paying for the card ? Also, how much was the decoder ? Thanks !

  6. Work  permit  is  for  a  current  account............but  the  poster  should  be  able  to  open  a  savings  account    http://www.phuketgazette.com/issuesanswers...ails.asp?id=175

i recently opened a current acc. with Maestro card with siam commercial bank, no visa required, very good internet site in english as well, i also have a current acc. with Siam City Bank and a joint savings acc with my wife there, although i think they are abit behind the times, i have always been on a tourist visa, all i needed was a passport and address in Thailand. Having said that I have been refused from a few banks but i highly recommend Siam Commercial Bank :o

Siam Commercial Bank refused to open any kind of account for me. I need a checking account but will settle for savings acct. if necessary.

    Thanks.

Goto the Thonglor branch of the siam commercial bank - they just ask for passport. The passport didn't even have a stamp in it because i just renewed it.

I've not seen anybody using cheques in Thailand; if you want to pay bills, just go to seven/eleven and use their PAYPOINT service. There's seven/elevens everywhere !!

  8. and we will arrange the technician to service you.

hmmm...was considering getting UBC but don't like the idea of being serviced by one of their technicians :o

All depends on if the technician is a pretty woman or not, and if the service involved oil and some gentle rubbing.

UBC is a rip-ff - get PSI satellite ! No subscription and premiership football every weekend !!!

So where do I get it and what's the initial cost? Also, what other channels are available? Thx in advance.

There website is http://www.psisat.com, but it's in thai, so i'm not sure how useful it is to you. There's a shop below Phrakanong bts (opposite side to the post office) that just sells it, and i heard there other small electronics shop that do it, but it doesn't seem to be widely available or very well advertised. Originally, the price was 17000bht for everything, including large motorised dish, sat box and installation, but it has recently been reduced to 14,500bht, which is about the same as getting UBC installed. I got mine installed for 13,000bht because one of my thai neighbours installs satellite dishes and tv aerials, so it's a good idea to ask your local tv aerial guy.

Most of the 300 or so channels are crap (indian, Arab and chinese), but if you take your time looking there a number of good channels. Here are some of my faves:-

    BBC WORLD

STARSPORTS (CHINA VERSION-no soccer, but have rugby, f1, tennis etc)

    MTV INDONESIA

BLOOMBERG (TO CHECK ALL MY INVESTMENTS)

TRACE TV - GOOD MUSIC CHANNEL

MATV - SHOWS HK ACTION MOVIES (SOME SUBTITLED)

NOW - LOTS OF STUFF ON LATEST COMPUTER GAMES

    FASHION TV

The indonesia satellite, PALAPA, shows the premiership football every weekend on channel MWD. It also shows a lot of english stuff (movies and u.s series) in the late evening.

The only thing i miss from UBC is a good premium movie channel and Larry King on CNN, but with the amount i save on subscription, i got broadband internet and i rent the latest movies from tsutaya, and it still less than UBC - that's why i say UBC is a rip-off !!

  9. is it just me or are there other people out there who always seem to find that one loose pavement tile that sends smelly dirty water all over your leg when you step on it?

If you want to get water up your leg, just walk up the top of thonglor (bts end) on a rainy day: There's loose slabs for about 200 yds - problem with leaky pipes !!

  10. hi all

any one no if this is normal?

my girlfriend is renting a house, she has been there for about 4 months and been paying rent on a monthly basis. now the landlord wants the next 12 months rent up front (he says that he wants to no that she is going to be a long term tennant)

she has the money to pay and is happy (ish) to do so but i am a little unsure.

any body have thoughts on this?

Tell the landlord to stick it !! To pay 12 months rent in advance is foolish, because your gf's circumstances could change and your landlord will not refund any money, id it does. There are plenty of places to rent, so threaten to move if the landlord gives you anymore shit !!

  12. I stumped up 100k when i got married, plus another 100k for the hotel reception and party, and the gold. I had no problem with this because i saw it as a gift rather than 'buying my wife'. But, i did make it clear that i would not be giving any money to them every month, because the mother would pass money to her daughters, who in turn gives money to her husband, so it removes their responsibility to take care of themselves. Before you know, you're looking after the entire extended family and friends. Instead, i buy gifts for the in-laws, which is much nicer than being treated as a walking atm, for both me and them. I just bought a house for the mother-in-law, and she is over the moon !!!

  13. No prob!  and here's a post [started in another thread elsewhere  :o ] from member ZOVOX:
I have two Bachelor degrees in Mathematics and Mechanical engineering, but i have no teaching certificate or experience - would i still be able to teach in Thailand ?

I assume that i would have to be able to speak thai to teach mathematics or science, but would i be able to teach english, being a native english speaker and having degrees ?

The answer to your first question is yes, definitely. The answer to your second is also yes, and that your assumption about teaching math and science in Thai is wrong- if you were doing that, you'd be competing with Thai teachers- typically a no-no in the Kingdom.

You can do much better teaching math or science here as a subject in English in the various EP programs. Of course, you can teach English everywhere. However, the entry level and upward mobility are much better with math and science- market forces at work.

The lack of any teaching experience is a minus, however- would suggest you might want to do English teaching for awhile just to get used to teaching itself and decide if it's for you or not. The pay will be lower, but then you're paying your dues. If you're cut out for it, you can apply later for the math/science jobs in a much better position to sell yourself as a *teacher*.

This kind of work will also give you connections that will be useful to you in your job hunt later (assuming you don't completely blow it!). If you're not confident in your skills as a starting English teacher, I'd highly recommend some sort of TEFL training first.

    "Steven"

Thanks ! What is 'EP programs' ? And how do i get started on one ?

  15. That was cheap! It's about 300 baht (including the 50 baht tip and toll-way fees) from Sukhumvit Road to Don Muang.

I get from Bang Na to Don Muang for 39 Baht!

White 38 for 5 Baht to On Nut.

BTS Monthly ticket to Mor Chit(18Baht), then the air bus to the domestic terminal 16Baht. It is faster too!

Some people have money to throw away. Lucky them. :o

    300 Baht , cheap?

I can fly to Koratachasima or KK for cheaper than that.(Air Asia)

You know most of the no.38 buses goes to mo chit - you could stay on the bus and save yourself 18 baht.

  16. There isn't a marriage visa, as such, but you can use your non-imm 'O' to apply for a one year extension inside Thailand based on marriage to a Thai, if you meet the money requirements.

They only asked for the wife's copy of her id card in Penang last month, as well as the marriage certificate, of course, for the non-imm 'O'. But agree, going the agent route means a lot less hassle and you'd spend more money anyway with the taxis.

If you go to one of the agents outside the swiss hotel (nj books or parzez books), they only ask for original marriage cert. plus photocopy of wife's i.d. Also, the non 'o' visa will give you 15 months - just leave and enter just before the visa expires and you still get another 90 days.

All well and good, but if you want to stay here on a more permanent basis, you'll need to be applying for the extension of stay to lead to your residency.

The guy says he doesn't have sufficient funds for the xtension. also, there are many people who have been here for a very long time getting back to back visas. As he is married to a thai, he should not have any problems getting a visa of some kind now or in the future. I understand that the thai authorities are being tougher on people getting tourist visas, but i doubt they would be so heartless to stop him seeing his wife.

  18. I'm not a septic, I'm an American.  And I'm trying to dump dollars quickly.

Septic is Brit-speak rhyming slang. "Septic tank" == "Yank". If you are American then you ARE a Septic or, as the Aussies say it, a "Seppo".

Actually, I knew that only because Brits and Aussies have been using that term lately, but that doesn't mean I'm septic.

Well, you can figure out what "Brit" rhymes with, but I won't call you that.

Anyway, I continue to dump dollars in exchange for baht, and wonder where it will end.

Errr.... it's short for British :o . Anyway I didn't call you septic I said you are a Septic. Different thing entirely.

As to where it will end: dunno. Gorgeous George is desperately trying to help US exporters by driving down the cost of buying US. I don't think the oil producers like the idea of weak dollar as it reduces their screw from selling the black-stuff priced, as it is, in dollars. If they opt to price on another currency then your selling of dollars for baht may look like good planning.

Unfortunatly it is a bit late for dumping dollars, trust me as i am getting paid in them and my wages have spirelled downwards for the last few months, if i had the choice i would hold them in a dollar account until things improve or until that <deleted> Bush goes away. Idon't think it will get much worst (i hope). Yahoo finance also does a 2 yaear graph for currencies which gives a good picture :D

I've been following the business reports on bloomberg and bbc world, and they all say the u.s dollar has more to fall - sorry to give you the bad news. I agree with you that bush is <deleted>, but the <deleted> going to be there for another 4 years, so i wouldn't hold your breath !!
