  1. T.I.T. no need to knock the translation obviously "melted" is a direct translation from Thai whereas we use the word "dissolved".

Though deprecated, the use of 'melt' for 'dissolve' is quite common in English.

Really  ...."melt" implies "heat or change in temperature" where dissolve does not..and someone whose 1st language is English would know instinctively which word to use in which situation..

You are correct, but we all don't want teachers posting to peoples typos or errors, as in my SUGAR reply you will get my drift.

  2. Have a music festival every week with farang players, i'm sure that will draw tourists!!!:whistling: :whistling: :lol:

Just so long as they're not old fart neverwere's, preferably under the age of seventy.

So at 69 could just qualify, Your old fart description may sum you up and maybe your no where near 70! hey lay off the oldsters-you get a better mix with all ages present. You might have to put up with ""MY WAY"" and"" MOON RIVER"" now and again though. Anyway these oldsters are good steady spenders here so you should take care of them, most of them spend more money here than all the 1 or 2 week holiday people. We support Thai people, and families, support poor rural people as a vast amount live in the snake country. OUR yearly spending here is astronomical compared to the 2 week splash by some show off on the beach with his black or blue "label J.W. Just to put my bit in in case some sane person from TAT is looking in, they could get a better Idea where the money is and how it's spent here. They make me sick sitting in an office having a meeting and coming up with shops 80% off tempting--to get tourists you don't even go down that road-TAT mentality ????

I'm early 40's and love those tunes as well. The "Rat Pack" , Marvin, Temptations, the wife loves Doris Day.( Que Sera Sera !)biggrin.gif

It certainly would be nice if they could get Hank Williams Jr. to play a concert here! That would bring in the tourist!

If you in your early 40's you make me sick :lol:Ha I've got all the golden songs on Pioneer-Sunfly graffic discs, from old man river-over the rainbow-moon river Elvis and the player all in fine nick--fabulous---I have hours of singing fun.

  3. Yes, from the newspapers and TV it looks like one of those huge non-powered barges which are towed by a little tug about one-tenth of their size, although my newspaper this morning describes it just as a boat ('reua').

I just wonder if the word GREED came to mind with any posters---was the barge overloaded ?? with that weight sounds a bit heavy on that part of the river. Did the owner fall asleep? had he passed his river license, ?? he should have been more aware of tides and water movements.

The first of the resident TV master mariners rears their head...:whistling: ...please explain the "bit heavy on that part of the river"... I am intrigued

The owner could most likely have fallen asleep and may not have a "river license", but possibly irrelevant as the "owner" of the either the vessel/barge or sugar was most likley not even anywhere near the river at the time...

Was not being too bright, was I?? it was just a guess that as happens here owners are often the drivers of these vessels, and anyway if not then they are responsible for who at "the wheel" and the weight of the boat. IS HE NOT ??

my remark was not intended to get a response really only as observation of normal happenings. With not knowing who owns--who steered-- how heavy--mine was a sort of search-if you get my drift. Do you understand if the owner was in the MALDIVES he would still be responsible--so I didn't think my post could be so odd. I don't suppose you agree??? but I was interested you thought the owner could not be responsible as he wasn't around ????)B) Hey did you notice where it said it ""CRASHED""" rammed and smashed it;self wound be a better description. Adding weights of vessels and depths of water DOES have a bearing do they not ??

Those single double and TRIPLE overloaded antique lorries transporting sugar cane around, so high they break down trees and 25% of the lorries are left to die on their side on the side of the road. ANOTHER Greedy industry. Then they pay 200 bht a day for the cutters. These big companies should be behind bars-together with the bib that allow overloads.

  6. Am i the only one that lines my pockets with junk food before i enter the cinema. Or would that be wrong?unsure.gif

I've walked in to the theatre with fried chicken and beer from the supermarket before and they didn't say a word to me

Why didn't you buy a suckling pig-apple sauce. french fries, a mat to unroll and sit on the floor at the front and get drunk :partytime2::welcomeani::cheesy::cheesy: Did you inquire about bed and breakfast??

Memories Ha, ref to your "towed" as in example---- horse drawn (canal) style ?? Towpath !

Bagwan, thanks for the dads army reminder--5555 so stupid but hilarious. My father was in that (regiment) L.D.V. local defense volunteers, In Lincolnshire,U.K. they call it -look -duck-and vanish. sorry for a little off topic for once :jap:

  8. Seems the TAT and tourism industry would try to boost tourism throughout the year....or is that too much work.

Seems to me they are suggesting that the concentrate on Group tour--and shopping. GET YOUR FINGERS OUT, and start with a good example==like order your national airline with it's aging fleet to have a last ditch effort and LOWER their airfares --Start at national level to set an example to others. And I mean drastically lower them. When they get the new aircraft they will then have recovered some lost souls, from the years before.

Also get these scum touts that rob the tourists off the streets and behind bars. It's all well and good having price cuts in the shops when your customers are local Hi -So's, good for the rich, good excuse. TAT you have to give them lower air fares to attract them there is too much competition out there if you hadn't already noticed. Get them here first--THEN take care of them when they arrive=starting form arrivals at Swampy--to departure at Swampy

  9. Well I'm glad you have glad you have got this, whatever it means, off your chest. Now perhaps you can help with the question I asked which is about the timing of this self damning proclamation of the current situation. Corruption and politics go hand in hand no matter what country, but I have never heard a PM stating this type of strange comment prior to trying to get re-elected. All outgoing PM's paint a good picture of their reign. Please, less of the anti Thaskin waffle as I have heard it all before on other forums, ask why has he made this statement. It does not make sense at the moment.

Maybe (shocking!) the man is honest and is telling it as it is instead of BSing?

Or would you prefer him to come out and say, "corruption?, what corruption?" Like Thaksin claiming that the "War on Drugs" had been won and other lies.

I find it perplexing that a person may be grilled for stating the truth.

Good answer, near as to my thinking in the previous post, Noted another person suggested that Abhisit may well be embedded in the corruption himself, HaHa.....what people sometimes think is unbelievable. I,m not saying that it"s impossible, but the international feel about him is the reverse of Thaksin style, States persons in this world knows who is fair and who is not, That does not include the nations reputation, that"s another story.

In a similar vein, PM-Abhisit promises things like a realistic/affordable increase in the minimum-wage, rather than 15k/month for all graduates & 300B/day for all others and tax-cuts-for-the-rich too.

And he says that if the election goes significantly against his party, and he has clearly led them to defeat, then he will accept responsibility & resign as leader of the Democratic Party. Not something a power-mad puppet or clone would say.

Sometimes someone who states the simple-truth is just being honest, not (quite) all politicians are devious, and that's the way he comes across, even after a few years in-office. If only there were a lot more like him, across the whole political-spectrum, in Thailand. B)

I wish there were more people(including Thai) could think the P.M. is reasonable, and pretty honest. I dont know truly if he is or not-but a gut feeling tells me he is far better than any other candidate out there. Why someone should smear the man when most people and Himself know why he cannot do as he wants, even as P.M.--So many people are hiding from reality. You need a massive civil unrest here to dislodge the real power here, not blame the P.M.

Whatever your reasons for throwing the BLACK issue to compare-your on your own, if you have a headache about it -then keep it. I understand why your using it BUT have blacks a problem with gay marriage if so leave it to another topic, or we will be inundated with posts about all minorities.

According to your further crazy notion about the last post to me that people choose to be gay. Now about your fixed idea on how a gay TURNS gay, The best thing is to get around gay people and ask them if they have a choice-like which way to go, now this=YOU SAID-QUOTE===((((((=meanwhile sexual orientation can depend on your open-mindedness and if you have developed a phobia of a certain gender or not. You seem to be best at arguing your position regarding the P.M. topic. Knowing the subject is one thing but not knowing and arguing about it is another. 13. Mrchangers @75

What on earth is the matter with posters saying about anti Thaksin waffle, You get the Idea because of all that happened in the past that it's anti Thaksin----IT'S WHAT HE DID, I personally really don't give a fig about him and the reason I speak is that This country believed him. I've heard all of your PRO Thaksin waffle as well.

The point you are asking as to why Abhisit come out and stated re the corruption is getting more bad--I wish I knew. He is only telling everyone what they already know, and behind his words I have a feeling he is kind of saying what the hell can you do when the country is controlled by the military and mafia long term ingrained.

To my mind it may be a dig at These. Who knows, just my honest opinion, it may not satisfy your question but I do not think anyone could. To me the P.M. stands well and out of this mafia system I think he is a good statesman. As I said it could be a way of saying the job at hand is impossible to turn things around until the big powers get on with defending the country, and give the P.M. the power he should hold.

  14. He plays "debate" to win "arguments" in the interwebs.

You can come across such people to almost every topic. It isn't something specific gay.

I replied to your comments earlier, and one in particular but you didn't feel the need to respond. Quote " People choose to be homosexuals" I ask you where on earth did you ever get that notion ?? You could have said people choose not to be gay. If you are going to give an opinion give a good valid reason, without coming out with that sort of rubbish. On topic I would add that if a society deems it fair for that type of society, then why not let them be wed, for whatever reasons they have for making that step.

The thread seems to have been taken over again by a said few -that seems to be always the case===side stepping the topic a fraction. Some of the discussions have been interesting to say the least, and many have spoken some solid sense, but as an example some chess players are pretending to be pro footballers.B)

  15. PM confesses that corruption has increased while he has been running the country. Well get a star and go to the front of the class, I like honesty but now go to the back for shooting yourself in the foot.

Maybe you did the same, Cancer does NOT stop growing when you know you have it, it still grows when your trying to treat it. Your biggest teacher of this problem is exactly the man that wants to return here and take power again.

You will need 10 years here to start to make inroads into this MESS.

My posting was about the timing of this comment. It seems to be very strange that after being in power you confess to a major problem getting worse just as the elections are round the corner. Perhaps this is a warm up for the "If it had not been for corruption we would have won the election" speech. I am searching for an answer but I suspect this is a major spanner going somewhere. If you can tell me, with any good reason, then please do.

The corruption here has been going on for donkey's years, more so when the lord and master of all K.Thaksin moved it on to another level, Abhisit admits it is getting worse, it's the people who blame him for it getting worse. They can see no farther than their noses the P.M. HERE should BUT i'm afraid does not have the power to do much about it. IT'S inbuilt, the cancer creeps but the surgeon in most cases cannot stop it. I wonder what the comments would be if HE lined his pockets the same as Thaksin was caught doing. Sure if I was him I would get out of it, I wouldn't put up with this farcical situation. IT IS beginning to smell bad. Pity as on the world stage he has some respect--NOT the country

  16. Agree 100%

I believe homosexual couples should be able to enter into civil unions, that are just as hard to get out of as a marriage, which affords them the same rights as a hetrosexual married couple. I also have no real conviction against or for them marrying but absolutely support any religion who refuses to perform such a ceremony and accept their rights to no recognize such a marriage under the laws of God but do believe they need to recognize it in terms of state laws.

That's all well and good, but keep in mind the FACT that in most countries/jurisdictions with "alternative" marriage access for gays that is not called marriage, gays don't have anything CLOSE to the exact same right as the oppressing heterosexuals. If you think over time that this second class citizen/back of the bus shabby treatment is going to be acceptable, you have another thing coming.

Gay rights, black struggle not the same

One evening last week, I was flipping through the TV channels to find something interesting. I turned to the local Fox affiliate where a scene in a show caught my attention. I would later come to find the scene was from the television series "Glee," where an effeminate male teenager was being called a faggot by a more masculine male teenager.

An adult male came into the room and defended the teen by asking the masculine male teen, "Do you use the "N" word or call people retarded?"

    The masculine teen responded, no.

"Then you should not use the 'F' word either," the adult said (the "F" word being faggot).

As an African American, I am offended at this scene and at homosexuals, in general, who attempt to identify their perceived struggle for equality with the struggle for equality that African Americans have gone through. Let me point out a few of many differences.

    • Homosexuals were never enslaved as a population in this country.
    • African Americans cannot change their race when it is popular or convenient.
    • The U.S. government never, in effect, condoned the lynching of homosexuals as they once did with African Americans.
    • The U.S. government never denied homosexuals the right to vote or to own property.
    • It is undefined as to what makes someone a homosexual. Some say it is the actual experience of engaging in sexual activity with a member of one's own sex. Others say it's the desires an individual has for someone of their same sex. It appears if one desired to rob a bank, and never actually did it, it would not make one a bank robber. The U.S. government established guidelines as to what criterion determines one to be an African American.

The struggle of African Americans and homosexuals are not the same. People choose to be homosexual; people don't choose their race or to have a developmental disability. I have spoken to homosexuals and they tell me rather emphatically, "I am what I choose to be sexually," which is different from race. Sexuality is a free will choice.

I am not homophobic; I do not fear homosexuals, I just wish they would stop attempting to hijack the pain, deaths, suffering and struggles of the African American people in this country.

    http://letters.ocreg...e-not-the-same/

Get your point about a few things BUT quote.. People choose to be homosexual WHAT..... it’s the desires an individual has for someone of their same sex.In other words it would come natural for Her or Him from an early age-and this differs.....I agree with Nisa on most points. The only thing in this world that is annoying is when a person pushes their own feelings/ sexual into the faces of people who don't want it. The same as employing you cannot afford to hire a person to show off their sexual feelings (over the top). I think more people would be more tolerant if what you do in bed and with who--keep it private-as it should be, it's not other peoples business. It is similar to these modern times when you hear of a person complain when they have wronged-""you only have fired me because I am ++++++ this is getting to be normal, many jump on the bandwagon to get compo. If you are a minority anywhere-Do not rock the boat too much.

  17. However, the plural of English has been around since 10-15 years as well: World Englishes. Quite a well known term in the world of linguistics.

Well the linguistics' are idiots as well......"Englishes".....one would suspect the gentlemen concerned are American...this is not proper English....QE II would never allow it...;)

Its as bad as "standee's and walkees"

I fish regular for fishes, but rarely catch many fishes only the odd fish, my friend is a fanatic, always after fish as many fishes as possible.:lol::lol: .................When I go shopping I will always say 1 kilo of fish--also how many fish do you have in that tank--there are shoals of fish in that area-- there are many types of fish in this area.........He fishes for cod---- otherwise MY version (not every ones) .........................................................not many people say there many fishes for sale or a load of fishes died in the river !!!!!! don't forget i'm nth England--sorry

  18. Worrying that people who aspire to positions of such power and influence believe in claptrap like this.

This is so stupid it's unbelievable, little kids wouldn't do this again can you imagine say the Brits or Germans doing this ???........................Now add this to the Aussie interview with the opposing P.M. and -come on what do you really think ???

I understand the thinking behind this in Thailand, BUT NOT at top Political level please.

they believe this will wash away all jinx? Idiotic thing!!!!!!!!!

    l :cheesy: :cheesy::cheesy::cheesy: very funny!!!!!

they will be Thai M.Ps? Nope!!!! no way!!!!!!!................ superstition?

bullet proof vests and cars are what they should consider..........

p.s. i wont even bother read this article. How did they come up with this idea? anyone??

    bong_smiley.gif

This is at times done when for instance someone has nearly died, and wants another life-better-and live longer with good luck=======they got in the boxes to do this old way of thinking, but I believe they did a 2 in 1.....to give them more corrupt money in the future if they gain power

  19. Either I'm just too tired or I just can't comprehend some of your verbiage. What are you saying in your post? Paying a university student 25 baht an hour to work at Swensen's just doesn't cut it for me. I have lived here permanently for several years, & I've been vacationing here every year for 20 years. I've been around. If Syam wants to progress & get out of being a 3rd World country, they've got to start paying people more. Money in your pocket, especially disposable income, is THE point.

I'm NOT trying to disagree with you, HaHa only been here a short time have we B), 1st thing Most of univ, students are too lazy to work, I also have been around here a long time and lived in near all regions, and apart from a minority the population-rural especially are idle, not many would even try to get more money because they want an easy time. the problem here is the ones that have the easy time are the corrupt lot. I do sympathize with the very poor who have little chance of education--the others have to learn in hard times you have to get your finger out and go for it, it won't wait for you. I the fifties I had to do when times were hard--I had to do my mother made sure of that. It's good upbringing that is the thing that is lacking, and a voice to speak when something is wrong, Thai nature does not allow that .

  20. In my view a goodly amount of bribery is perpetrated by government workers who are paid very little. A few years ago the dean of a gov't university asked me to teach a group of it's teachers. I asked her what their average wage was. She replied that the all had master's degrees & the salary was US$5,000.00 a year. I taught for free, as I was shocked at such poverty wages. Obviously employees without university training can't go to Starbucks, the cinema, own a car, dress nicely, live in anything remotely encouraging. People have to eat, so unless paid adequately, even good people bend the rules.

Look please, I do not know OR want to know how much you live on, but I think you are comparing too much with western wages.

Wages here I admit are not over the top at all, to say that would be a joke, but being Thailand and comparing a Big C check out wage it compares, What I do disagree strongly to is paying the bib more money, totally wrong--do you believe that would stop the bibs corruption. This is a business not a just a paid job. To compensate when times are hard, you have to seek more than 1 job. I had 3 in one day Government -day football ref-eve singing-night. I did say I think wages are not brill BUT !!!!! up to the person. I have a Thai friend manages a karaoke bar eve and after that sells food over night at the local market. sleeps 6am-2pm. and enjoys. but it's cause he wants to get extra.

What do you think you will find at top level of politics anywhere in the world?

In USA nowadays ideologues rule, in Greece Socialists who are oblivious of the death of that system, in Africa animism and Briyumba rule,

in Brazil Umbanda, in all of South America Santeria. Here in Thailand even Abhisit wears his amulet.

To apply Western standards to this or any country is a non-sequitur. An exercise in futility.

From the humblest of citizens to the top of the pyramid of power, this is Thailand and there is nothing we can do about it.

Respect and let them be and hope they will evolve into the 21 century... eventually.

    :jap:

Are you after a Nobel prize???.....My meaning being -from way before this coffin business, and the ridiculous Yingluck interview on Aussie t.v. These party people in opposition are doing what most Thais are good at-they call it'' action'' attention seeking, Idid mention the thinking-tradition behind this and do respect it--but you were to quick to try to get a brownie point. I was talking about the tactics here NOT Africa or Brazil-clever get real, and come back down to earth.

Just another thing about your mini lecture Quote "this is Thailand and there is nothing we can do about it" so what's the problem, do you assume people don't know anything?...Your saying let them be-----sure I will indeed.
