  2. Please keep it civil. LSD and other hallucinogens have been shown to be effective in treating a number of mental conditions. The unregulated or unsupervised use of these drugs may have a less-than-positive outcome. This thread, however, is about a notorious drug lord. Let's stick to that for now.
  3. WASHINGTON — The person suspected of recently leaking classified U.S. government documents has been identified as Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, two law enforcement officials said Thursday. Officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation, said that officials have been tracking Teixeira for some time and that an arrest is imminent. The classified documents from the Department of Defense were found online last month — it remains unclear how long the documents had been on the internet and the total number that have been posted — and revealed details of U.S. spying on Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine, secret assessments of Ukraine’s combat power, as well as intelligence gathering on America’s allies, including South Korea and Israel, NBC News previously reported. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/national-security/us-officials-identify-leaked-classified-documents-suspect-21-year-old-rcna79577
  4. Authorities have identified a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard as a person of interest in the investigation into classified documents leaked over the Discord social media platform in recent months, sources told ABC News Thursday. The New York Times has reported the name of this person. ABC News is not naming the individual at this time and has reached out to the family of the person of interest. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/authorities-identify-massachusetts-air-national-guard-member-person/story?id=98558673

  8. A shooting in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday morning has left six victims, including a police officer, according to preliminary information from a source with direct knowledge of the scene on the ground. The Louisville Metro Police said they were responding to “an active aggressor” on the 300 block of East Main Street in downtown, adding “there are multiple casualties.” FBI Louisville described the incident as a shooting, and other officials urged residents to stay away from the area. https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/10/us/louisville-ketucky-incident/index.html

  10. and German tourists are beginning to avoid the UK, tourism leaders fear, because of post-Brexit restrictions on travelling with identity cards. Since anti-Covid measures ended across Europe last year, tourism has started to recover, but there are growing signs that significant numbers of French and Germans – two of the largest markets for UK tourism – are staying away. Since October 2021, EU citizens have needed a passport to enter the UK. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/apr/08/french-and-german-tourists-turn-their-back-on-brexit-britain

  12. One of the big problems was the lack of information on who was actually eligible to be evacuated. It doesn't work well to evacuate whoever shows up at the airport first. There were 20 years of time and that includes a lot of people who worked for or were associated with fighting the Taliban. In general the people who get evacuated are the employees of the US Military and those who have worked with/for NGOs that received money from the US. Evacuation involves bringing the immediate family members of the primary person. That has to be defined. In general it means those who can show they lived in the family household --so it may mean grandparents. Generally, adult sibling of a primary would not be evacuated unless they were a part of the household. Single women are sometimes allowed to be accompanied by a male relative for religious reasons even though he would not be eligible to leave. It was pretty obvious there was little attention paid over a long period of time as to who was at the greatest danger and in need of being evacuated. It should be noted that most of these people have not qualified as refugees and have been resettled under humanitarian visas. Those visas are due to expire soon and many could face deportation back to Afghanistan.
  13. I have been involved in a number of evacuations under varying conditions, some small some larger in scale, including Operation Quick Transit and Pacific Haven. All I can say, is that they never go according to any plan. Dealing with large numbers of people who are in full panic mode does not go well. I am actually impressed that the Trump administration had a plan and that it seemed sound enough to be implemented. I suspect that a fair number of very high level people who were of particular use to the US were out before anyone else. In one evacuation I was involved in, the minute thing went sideways, the CIA assets were taken out of the country. Anybody who things these things go well only needs to look at the evacuation from South Vietnam, and that was tiny, with only in the neighborhood of 7,000 people who made it out. It was never going to end well.

  16. In the 24 hours since former President Donald Trump’s arraignment, the presiding judge and his family have received multiple threats, two sources familiar with the matter said. One official said “dozens” of threats have recently been directed at Judge Juan Merchan and his chambers but did not give an exact time frame for them. The other source said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and other top officials in his office continue to receive threats. The threats have been in the form of calls, emails and letters. https://news.yahoo.com/trump-judge-family-receive-threats-233226748.html
  17. Russia’s ongoing military defeats in Ukraine and the social burden of mobilization are rapidly cooling the public’s support for the war. Meduza has gained access to the results of an opinion poll commissioned by the Kremlin “for internal use only.” According to the study conducted by the Federal Protective Service (FSO), 55 percent of Russians favor peace talks with Ukraine, while only a quarter of the respondents still support continuing the war. The FSO poll does not diverge all that much from the results of an October public-opinion study conducted by the Levada Center, Russia’s only large independent sociological institute. https://meduza.io/en/feature/2022/11/30/make-peace-not-war

  20. Oh, I remember some physical punishment well and vividly. Unfortunately, that's all I remember. I don't have a clue anymore what it was that I did that precipitated it. Emotionally abusive language is at least as damaging. I had a close friend growing up who was subjected to outbursts from his mother with such things as, "I wish you were never born." He was a nice kid. He died by suicide as a young adult. I suspect that physically abusive behavior (not necessarily to be confused with discipline) leads to anger that is manifested outwardly, with abused kids becoming abusive to others. Emotional abuse I suspect, in the extreme, ends up with self-harm.
