  3. I have spent years in the classroom and have often allowed students to do presentations in class. The subjects had to be approved, but about the only thing that was off the table was the Monarchy. Students could take a position in making a presentation, but they had to have authoritative sources. The rest of the class also had the opportunity to ask questions. It's a classroom setting and the emphasis needs to be on learning. That means doing some research, having a thesis and being able to argue a position. This appears to be little more than hate speech. I'd be interested to know how the teacher graded the presentations.

  7. — Federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against New York Rep. George Santos, the Republican lawmaker whose astonishing pattern of lies and fabrications stunned even hardened politicos, according to three sources familiar with the matter. Santos is expected to appear as soon as Wednesday at federal court in New York’s eastern district, where the charges have been filed under seal. The exact nature of the charges couldn’t immediately be learned but the FBI and the Justice Department public integrity prosecutors in New York and Washington have been examining allegations of false statements in Santos’ campaign finance filings and other claims. https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/09/politics/george-santos-charged-justice-department/index.html

  10. A driver plowed into a group outside a shelter that had been housing migrants in a Texas border town on Sunday, leaving seven people dead – including several immigrants – and close to a dozen injured, authorities say. Authorities in Brownsville, Texas say they got a call around 8:30 am CT about a Land Rover that hit multiple people who were waiting at a bus stop across the street from the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center, a non-profit homeless shelter that has been helping house migrants. Authorities say it’s unclear whether the crash was intentional. The crash left seven dead and at least ten injured, Martin Sandoval, a Brownsville police spokesperson, told CNN. Sandoval added that several migrants were among the dead and Border Patrol is working to confirm the identities of the victims. https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/07/us/brownsville-texas-car-crash-accident/index.html
  11. I have edited the original post to give a more detailed look at Joe's life. I'll post it here as well: Joe Reedy, 73, a dedicated individual and beloved moderator, passed away in Ubon Ratchathani, leaving behind a lasting impact on the lives he touched. Among his many services, Joe served as an expert on visa issues for aseannow.com. He joined the forum in 2008. Born in the United States, Joe dedicated ten years of his life to serving his country as a jet engine technician in the US Air Force from 1968 to 1978. Joe's relocation to Thailand over 17 years ago, followed the devastating loss of his wife to cancer. He eventually remarried and settled in Ubon Ratchathani. Embracing his passion for community service, Joe became a member of American Legion Post TH01 in Ubon. He actively participated in various roles, serving as a member-at-large and the Public Affairs Officer. Through his involvement, Joe displayed a deep commitment to fellow veterans, ensuring their voices were heard and their needs were met. He will be remembered as a resilient and honorable man who dedicated his life to serving others, both in his military career and in his commitment to going above and beyond the call of duty in helping the many people with questions and concerns about traveling, working or living in Thailand. He has had a profound effect on the lives of many. Joe is survived by two daughters from the US, his wife in Thailand and his adopted daughter, who graduated from University and is now married.

  15. WASHINGTON − Republican megadonor Harlan Crow paid private boarding school tuition for the grandnephew of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, according to report Thursday in ProPublica that was likely to bring a fresh round of scrutiny to both Thomas and the ethics practices at the nation's highest court. Thomas had taken legal custody of his grandnephew at the time and told C-SPAN in an interview he was "raising him as a son." Tuition at the Georgia boarding school ran more than $6,000 a month, ProPublica reported.
